Prologue
A deep blue-black night, with two moons shining beyond the window.
Past the glass, the northern reaches of the Empire vanished into a howling blizzard. This was the North's only great city—the view of Petrograd, capital of the Northern Grand Duchy.

In stark contrast, a warm fire burned in the hearth. A plush, costly carpet covered the floor, and the chamber was dressed in nothing but luxury: silver candlesticks and silver tableware, a fine painting in its frame, expensive wine set upon the table.
