The Price of Triumph
The Grand Hall of the Adventurers' Guild was suffocatingly quiet.
Only a few hours ago, the streets had been filled with the deafening cheers of the populace. The Hero's party had returned, carrying the severed head of the Demon King. It was a historic victory, a triumph that was supposed to usher in a new era of peace.
And yet, here I stood, facing the very people I had raised, nurtured, and funded from the ground up.
I, Seton, the Guild Master of the most prestigious guild in the empire, looked at the cold, indifferent faces of the Hero's party.
"So," I said, my voice echoing slightly in the vast, empty hall. "You're demanding my resignation."
The Hero, a man who had once been a starving orphan I took in, stepped forward. His armor, forged from the rarest mythril and paid for by the guild's coffers, gleamed under the magical chandeliers.
"It's not a demand, Seton," the Hero said, his voice devoid of any warmth. "It's a necessity. If not for your incompetent management and constant interference, we would have slain the Demon King months ago."
I stared at him, momentarily speechless. Incompetent management? Interference?
"I secured your supply lines," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I negotiated with the dwarven lords to get you that armor. I personally handled the political fallout every time you destroyed a noble's estate during your 'righteous' battles. And now you stand there and call it interference?"
A mage from the party, a woman who had once begged me for access to the guild's restricted library, sneered.
"Let's be honest, Seton," she said, crossing her arms. "You're just a bureaucrat. A relic of the past. The world has changed. We don't need a paper-pusher running the guild. We need a leader. We need the Hero."
The surrounding guild members, many of whom had benefited from my leadership for years, avoided my gaze. Some nodded in agreement with the mage. The atmosphere was thick with betrayal.
A system notification suddenly flickered in my vision, a cold reminder of the reality I was facing.
A motion for impeachment has been filed against Guild Master Seton.
Approval Rate: 87.4%
Status: IMPEACHMENT APPROVED
I let out a dry, hollow laugh. It was truly pathetic.
"I see," I said, looking at each of them in turn. "You think the hard part is over because the Demon King is dead. You think you don't need the man who kept the monsters at bay behind the scenes."
"We don't," the Hero replied coldly. "Pack your things, Seton. Your time is up."
I closed my eyes for a brief moment, letting the anger, the disappointment, and the sheer absurdity of the situation wash over me. When I opened them, the warmth that had once defined my leadership was entirely gone.
"Fine," I said, stepping down from the dais. "Have it your way. Let's see how long your peace lasts without me."
