Group Stage Matchday 1: Africa's Black Panther
Chile, Estadio Municipal de Chillán.
This was the venue for the U-17 World Cup Group C opener: South Korea versus Nigeria.
One hour before kickoff.
When the two teams crossed paths in the locker-room corridor, the Korean players collectively sucked in a breath.
"Whoa..."
"Hyung, are those guys really seventeen? They look older than my uncle."
Striker Oh Dong-sik whispered, face pale with shock.
The Nigerian players.
They were not "boys."
Average height in the high 180s. Thighs packed with explosive muscle, black skin taut with coiled elasticity you could feel just by looking. A few even sported dark stubble along their jaws.
By contrast, the Korean side still carried the soft faces of adolescents. It was a visual gut-punch—like college seniors lining up against elementary-school kids.
Nigeria's captain, number 10 "Okocha Junior," swept his gaze over the Koreans and let a crooked smile curl his lips.
He snickered to the teammate beside him.
"Warm-up match today. Don't go too hard. Break a bone and they'll run home crying to Mama."
The words were English, but the contempt needed no translation. Pure dismissal.
Korean shoulders hunched. The sheer physical gulf was already crushing their nerves before a ball had been kicked. That was always the first wall you hit against African sides.
Then it happened.
From the very back, still tying his bootlaces, Gang-cheol rose and walked forward at an unhurried pace.
He planted himself squarely in front of Okocha Junior—173 cm of Ma Gang-cheol staring up at 185 cm of solid mass.
"Hey, Big guy."
Gang-cheol's English was flawless.
Okocha's eyebrow twitched.
"Your zipper is open."
"......What?"
Okocha jerked his eyes downward in panic. The zipper was fine, of course.
"Kidding."
Gang-cheol flashed a grin and gave the bigger man's shoulder a casual slap.
"Too tense. Relax, man."
"You... you little monkey bastard—!"
Okocha lunged, but Gang-cheol was already gone, whistling as he vanished into the locker room.
The Korean players watching that retreating back felt something shift in their expressions.
He wasn't scared.
The great Ma Gang-cheol had just toyed with those giants.
One tiny moment cracked the ice of their fear.
Inside the locker room, Coach Kim Tae-hoon stood with lips cracked dry from nerves.
The real leader, however, stood calmly in front of the tactics board, idly spinning a marker between his fingers.
"All right, briefing time. You all froze when you saw those black brothers, right?"
The players gave sheepish laughs.
"Fair enough. They're the most successful nation in U-17 World Cup history. Elasticity? Speed? They crush us in both. If this were a track meet, we'd lose every race."
Gang-cheol laid out the cold facts without sugarcoating.
"But football isn't track and field."
He drew a huge circle on the board.
"Swamp. That's our concept today."
"Swamp?"
"Those guys run on pure vibe. When they're flying, nobody can stop them. Flip side—when the game stops going their way, they get pissed off fast and the whole structure collapses. Classic mood players."
Gang-cheol's eyes flashed.
"First twenty minutes of the first half. Just survive that long. They'll come at us like animals—don't meet fire with fire. Drop deep and absorb. I'll kill the tempo myself."
He clenched a fist.
"When they're gasping and spent... that's hunting time."
Peeeeep—!
The referee's whistle launched the match.
Exactly as predicted. No—worse.
"Waaaaah!"
The moment the ball rolled, Nigeria's "black panthers" charged like madmen.
No tactics. Just raw speed and power steamrolling forward—pure "shut-up-and-attack."
Bang! Thud!
"Ugh!"
Defender Kim Cheol-su collided shoulder-to-shoulder with a Nigerian forward and bounced off like an egg thrown at a boulder.
Screams erupted from the Korean supporters in the stands.
Fast. And heavy.
Gang-cheol clicked his tongue from midfield.
A Nigerian midfielder collected the ball and drove forward; two Korean defenders closed in, but they simply couldn't match the pace.
Fifth minute.
A Nigerian winger shredded the flank and whipped in a cross.
The 190 cm striker in the middle rose like a rocket. Korean defenders could only stamp their feet in place.
KWAANG—!
The header smashed the post and ricocheted away.
A heart-stopping moment.
Nigerian players pounded the turf in frustration; the Koreans clutched their chests in relief.
"Wake up! Don't freeze!"
The goalkeeper roared, but fear was already spreading like a plague.
Outmuscled, they had no room for technique. Passes were intercepted; clearances became desperate hacks. Classic "getting battered" football.
"Hahaha! Little kids, go home and drink more milk!"
Okocha brushed past Gang-cheol with a taunt.
Gang-cheol didn't answer.
His eyes had gone ice-cold. The system interface flooded his vision with crimson warnings.
WARNING: Opponent's athletic ability is overwhelming allied forces.
Allied morale is dropping.
SOLUTION:Tempo Control required.
Yeah. Not yet.
Gang-cheol gestured for his teammates to calm down.
"Drop! Drop the line!"
The Korean players retreated all the way to the edge of the penalty box. Ten-man defense.
Nigeria, delighted, poured on wave after wave of attacks. The shot count ballooned to 10–0.
Korean expats in the stands stamped their feet in anxiety; the commentators in the booth sighed.
"Ah... they're being completely overrun. Ma Gang-cheol is nowhere to be seen either. Is the physical wall simply too high?"
But this was calculated "playing dead."
Twenty-fifth minute of the first half.
The Nigerian onslaught dulled—just a fraction.
Gang-cheol moved.
A clearance from a defender rolled toward the halfway line.
Two Nigerian midfielders sprinted in like hunting dogs.
"Mine!"
Gang-cheol didn't flee.
He planted his sole on the ball and stopped dead. La Pausa.
In the middle of a battlefield, he looked like a man out for a stroll.
Come on.
When the first opponent closed to within a meter, Gang-cheol simply nudged the ball sideways and slipped into the empty space.
The charging Nigerian swung at air.
The return pass came straight back to Gang-cheol.
This time Okocha himself charged.
Gang-cheol turned, offering his back. Okocha shoved hard from behind.
Any normal player would have been sent flying, but Gang-cheol used Flexibility (S) and Center-of-Gravity Shift to bleed the force away.
Like a judo master, he spun with the push.
Marseille turn.
Okocha's eyes went round.
Gang-cheol strolled free of the pressure. Then he killed the tempo again.
Slow dribbles, drawing them in.
"Get him! Somebody get that bastard!"
Nigerian players, blood up, swarmed in packs.
Gang-cheol mocked them with short passes, sideways switches, and back-passes, circulating the ball.
The Korean players began to move to his rhythm.
The Nigerians sprinted themselves ragged trying to win the ball, yet it only yo-yoed from Gang-cheol's feet—never truly lost.
This was "swamp football."
Make the opponent run until their legs and minds both break—hellish dog-work.
Fortieth minute.
Nigerian breathing turned ragged.
The price of mindless power was coming due.
Meanwhile the Koreans, who had conserved energy in a defensive shell, were just starting to warm up.
Gang-cheol grinned.
Now.
Forty-third minute.
Gang-cheol collected the ball on the halfway line.
The Nigerian back line, exhausted, had loosened.
A path opened in Gang-cheol's eyes.
Kill-pass trajectory locked. Success rate: 98%.
His right foot swung like a cannon.
The ball rocketed low and fast across the grass, threading an impossible through-ball between four Nigerian defenders.
"Huh?!"
Oh Dong-sik, stationed up top, reacted on pure instinct.
The ball arrived at his feet as if delivered by magic.
Defenders scrambled late—far too late.
One-on-one with the keeper.
Dong-sik coolly slotted it into the far corner.
Ripple—!
"WAAAAAAAAH!!!!"
The stadium erupted.
A first goal for the side that had been getting hammered—and it came from a single, surgical counter.
Dong-sik sprinted over and leapt into Gang-cheol's arms.
"Gang-cheol! You were right! The pass just stuck to my foot!"
The Nigerian players stood stunned.
They had dominated every metric—so why were they losing?
Halftime. Locker room.
The atmosphere was electric.
Coach Kim Tae-hoon's face was flushed with excitement.
"Perfect! Exactly that! Survive, then strike! First half was flawless!"
Gang-cheol sipped water and surveyed his teammates.
Sweat-soaked, yes—but their eyes were alive, brimming with the belief that they could do this.
"Hyungs. The second half will be easier."
He wiped his face with a towel.
"Their heads are gone. They'll be sniping at each other and losing their minds. They'll come out even more unhinged at the restart—just hold for ten more minutes. After that... it's our world."
His prediction was dead-on.
The second half began with Nigeria abandoning all reason and throwing everything forward.
They pushed the defensive line to the halfway mark and launched an all-out assault.
But their tanks were already empty. Heavy legs were obvious.
Fifteenth minute of the second half.
A Nigerian pass went astray.
Gang-cheol intercepted.
"Counter!"
This time there was no pass.
He drove forward himself.
Two defenders stepped into his path.
Gang-cheol never slowed.
Phantom Dribble (S)
Left foot to right foot—the ball vanished and reappeared in the blink of an eye as he slipped between the defenders.
Phantom Dribble. The same move Iniesta of Barcelona loved to use.
The massive defenders were left looking like scarecrows.
"Stop him! Break his legs if you have to!"
A roar exploded from the Nigerian bench.
Okocha's eyes rolled white as he launched a full-blooded back-tackle. He wasn't going for the ball. Pure revenge.
"Dangerous!"
The crowd screamed.
But Gang-cheol's Regressor's Eye had already seen the future.
The instant the tackle came in, he lofted the ball and hopped lightly over it.
Too late.
Okocha scythed empty air and face-planted into the turf.
When Gang-cheol landed, only the goalkeeper remained.
He shaped to shoot—a perfect fake. The keeper flinched and dived.
Gang-cheol casually rolled the ball sideways past the sprawling keeper and walked it into the empty net.
Roll... roll...
Ripple.
The dagger.
A goal so coldly composed it snapped Nigeria's will to chase completely.
Gang-cheol sprinted to the corner flag and performed the "stroll celebration"—the exact same one Baek Seong-ji had used against Japan.
Silence blanketed the stadium for a heartbeat, then the Korean expats erupted in pure joy.
"Dae-han-min-guk! Clap-clap-clap clap-clap!"
The remaining minutes belonged entirely to Gang-cheol and the kids.
Nigerian players had lost the will to fight. They walked. Gang-cheol weaved through them at will, drawing "Olé" chants from the crowd.
Africa's black panthers had become paper tigers.
Peeeeep—!
Full time.
2–0. Complete victory for South Korea.
A miraculous win against the most physical side in the Group of Death, first match out.
"We won!!"
"We beat Nigeria!"
Players piled on top of one another, rolling across the grass. Coach Kim Tae-hoon's eyes were red as he high-fived his staff.
Gang-cheol, however, remained calm.
He walked over to Okocha, who sat on the turf catching his breath, and extended a hand.
"Good game."
Okocha stared up blankly.
The boy in front of him was clearly smaller, slighter—an East Asian kid. Yet right now Gang-cheol looked like a mountain.
Okocha gave a bitter smile and took the offered hand, rising to his feet.
"You are monster... small monster."
Post-match mixed zone.
Reporters from every corner of the globe swarmed Gang-cheol.
ESPN, BBC, L'Équipe... the big names shoved microphones forward.
"Ma Gang-cheol! How did you overcome the physical disadvantage?"
"Your team's organization was incredible. Are you the leader?"
Gang-cheol pushed sweat-soaked hair from his forehead and looked straight into the cameras. He answered in English.
"Football isn't played with the body. It's played with the head. The legs are just tools."
Then he grinned.
"Nigeria was strong. But my teammates were stronger. We're One Team."
Even the humility of sharing credit.
The journalists typed furiously, impressed.
But Gang-cheol's next line was anything but humble.
"Next up is France, right?"
A reporter nodded. Tournament favorites, the "art football" of France.
"Mbappé or whatever his name is—I hear he's pretty quick."
Gang-cheol pointed a finger straight at the camera lens.
"Tell him to come prepared. My speed isn't anything to laugh at either."
A declaration of war.
A provocation that would set football fans worldwide on fire.
The rebellion of Gang-cheol's kids had only just begun.
