On the Shoulders of Giants
"It's the final... We actually made it this far."
The voices of the Haeseong Elementary kids trembled.
The main stadium of the civic sports complex. Not the auxiliary pitch they usually used, but a vast main field of natural grass whose sheer presence left the boys overwhelmed. The stands held not only the cheering squads from each school, but local press and soccer officials from across the country.
Their opponents in the final: Shinil Elementary.
The undisputed final boss of this tournament—a true powerhouse that contended for the national title every year, far beyond mere city-level competition. They were no ordinary elementary team. They were a quasi-professional unit that had transplanted the youth system of a prestigious K-League club wholesale.
"Hey... are those guys really elementary schoolers?"
Park Min-su swallowed hard as he stared at the other side.
The Shinil players stood a full head taller than the Haeseong kids. The central defenders and forwards especially boasted physiques that rivaled most middle schoolers—thick thighs, broad shoulders. The product of systematic nutrition and scientific training.
"Wipe that drool, Min-su. Get scared and you've already lost."
Gang-cheol spoke quietly as he adjusted the captain's armband. Yet even his own gaze had sharpened and settled into something cold.
Powerful collective pressing defense detected.
Opponent average physique: B+ (top tier by Republic of Korea U-12 standards)
Current Haeseong Elementary average physique: C+
Physical duel success rate projected to drop 25% due to the gap.
The wall of physique... the cruelest variable in elementary soccer.
No matter how good your technique, if you lost the physical battle you never even got the chance to use it. Gang-cheol slapped his still-boyish thighs. He had ground himself down at the LK Center until he nearly died, but an eleven-year-old body that had yet to hit its second growth spurt still sat firmly in the "little kid" category.
Tweeeet—!
The curtain rose on the final.
From the opening whistle Shinil launched wave after wave of attacks. They gave Haeseong no room to set up any tactics.
"Press high! Pin them one by one!"
At their captain's shout the massive frames poured into Haeseong's half.
The Haeseong boys panicked. This was a different dimension of pressure from Buksan or Daeseong. The moment anyone touched the ball, two or three opponents swarmed without giving them a breath.
"Ugh!"
The instant Yeong-sik received the ball a Shinil midfielder drove a shoulder into him and sent him tumbling. It was a clean physical challenge, yet to Yeong-sik it felt like being hit by a boulder.
"Hey! Snap out of it! Clear it!"
Min-su roared and booted the ball away, but it simply rolled back under Shinil feet.
Wave after wave. Relentless as the tide, Shinil's attacks kept coming. Haeseong could not escape their own half; they were trapped below the halfway line.
Fifteenth minute of the first half. The feared moment arrived.
A Shinil winger tore open the flank and whipped in a cross. The center-backs jumped, but Shinil's towering striker—170 cm that felt like 190—rose above them all and powered a header home.
Ripple—!
0–1.
Haeseong's net bulged.
"Waaaaaah!"
"That's Shinil for you! Totally different class!"
The roar from the stands forced the Haeseong boys' heads down. Worse than the goal itself was the despair that they could never win. Collide and bounce off. Sprint and get caught. For elementary kids, physical inferiority was the collapse of belief itself.
"Gang-cheol... it's no use. They're way too strong."
Cheol-su looked at him with a voice on the edge of tears. The light in the boys' eyes already conceded defeat.
Gang-cheol walked to the halfway line without a word. He pressed the grass hard under his sole.
Yeah... even I cried when I hit walls like that at this age in my past life.
But the soul inside him now was thirty-five years old. A professional soul that had tasted countless comebacks and defeats.
The first half ended 0–1.
Haeseong locker room.
Heavy silence filled the space. The boys sat with heads bowed, caked in sweat and dirt. Coach Kim Pan-seok could not find words either. Lifting their spirits mattered more than any tactical instruction, yet even that felt impossible in this atmosphere.
Then Gang-cheol stood.
He slammed his palm down on the nearby metal tactics board with a sharp bang!
"Heads up."
The boys flinched and looked at him. In Gang-cheol's eyes was no longer the kindly captain they knew, but the cold, razor-edged gaze of a warrior.
"Scared? Those big frames scare you?"
"Gang-cheol... they're a whole weight class above us. We shove and they don't even move."
"So what? Big body means good at soccer? Then wrestlers should win the Ballon d'Or."
His dry joke drew a few choked half-laughs. Gang-cheol met every single pair of eyes.
"They're greenhouse flowers. Systematic coaching? Cutting-edge gear? Fine. But there's one thing they don't have. We're the ones who died and came back. The wildflowers that rolled around on dirt floors—okay, maybe half-basement floors smelling of soju—to get here."
He pointed at the scar on his own knee.
"Those big guys think they're going to win. So if we hit them properly just once, they'll panic harder. Big guys make a louder noise when they fall."
He began shifting magnets on the board.
"Second half, we change tactics. Forget pretty football. They crash into us, we crash right back. I'm not saying kick ankles. Fight with pure obsession for the ball. The ball is round. If physique fails, use speed. If speed fails, use brains."
He pointed at Min-su.
"Min-su, you go up as a pure target man second half. Don't hold it with your back. Just grind. Make their defenders hate your guts."
"Huh? Me?"
"Yeah. You pull the aggro so space opens. I run into that space."
Finally he held out his hand to the group.
"Legends are written in exactly this kind of hopeless situation. Is Haeseong's legend ending right here?"
Sparks began to catch in the boys' eyes.
It was not a captain speaking. It was a general leading soldiers on a battlefield—no, a king's command.
The defeatist air of the locker room ignited in an instant.
Second half kickoff.
The light in Haeseong's eyes had changed.
"Haeseong! Haeseong! Win it!"
To the roar of the crowd Haeseong pushed their line absurdly high. The Shinil players were rattled. Kids who had been dead quiet in the first half were suddenly charging like predators.
"What the hell? These little bastards!"
The moment the Shinil captain tried to control the ball, Park Min-su charged like a wild boar and drove his shoulder in.
"Urgh!"
The same Min-su who had been shoved around earlier now held his ground. No—he clung on with vicious tenacity. It was rough enough to flirt with a foul, but the momentum was entirely his.
Team Trait: <Indomitable Fighting Spirit> temporarily activated!
All members' agility and physical duel success rate increased by 15%.
Here it comes.
Gang-cheol waited for his moment in midfield.
Fifteenth minute of the second half. He intercepted the ball in the center. Three Shinil players closed around him.
"Not a chance!"
Gang-cheol did not flinch. Thirty-five years of experience found the path through the tight space.
He rolled the ball with his left foot to draw them in, then lightly poked it with his right and slipped free.
The famous La Croqueta.
Having threaded the forest of three bodies, he faced the goal and Park Min-su ahead of him.
"Min-su! Grind!"
The pass found Min-su. He locked into a physical battle with a massive Shinil defender and held on.
In the first half he would have gone down. Now he clenched his teeth and protected the ball with the tip of his boot.
"Aaaaargh! You're not taking it!"
The instant the defenders' eyes locked on Min-su, Gang-cheol exploded into the open space.
Min-su did not need to hear the call; he sensed it and laid the ball back.
"Now!"
Gang-cheol's right foot flashed.
The ball screamed through the defensive wall and buried itself in the far corner before the keeper could even move.
Thwack—!
1–1. Level!
"Wooooooah!"
"Ma Gang-cheol! Ma Gang-cheol!! Ma Gang-cheol!!!"
The civic stadium erupted as if it would tear itself apart.
The boys piled onto Gang-cheol roaring. The prologue of a legend had become reality.
Yet Shinil were still strong. Conceding the equalizer, they calmly reorganized and reasserted their structure.
Back and forth the battle raged.
Five minutes left. At this rate it would go to penalties.
Physical fatigue has exceeded 90%!
The brain (S+) can no longer force the muscles (A) to obey.
Cramps began to seize Gang-cheol's legs. His eleven-year-old heart hammered as if it would burst.
But he did not stop.
One more time... just once more, break through.
Final moments of the match.
Corner-kick chance. Gang-cheol stepped up as taker.
Everyone expected a long ball aimed at tall Min-su's head.
Instead Gang-cheol set the ball down and flashed an invisible hand signal to his teammates.
The set play. Option two.
He did not drive it long. He clipped a short pass to Cheol-su waiting behind him.
Shinil defenders flinched and rushed out.
"Stop it! Short corner!"
In that gap Gang-cheol received the return and drove into the box.
No angle. Three defenders blocked his path.
He did not shoot. Instead he dragged the ball with the sole of his foot and slipped a perfect reverse pass to Park Min-su arriving late.
"Min-su! Finish it!"
Min-su collected it right in front of goal. Defenders threw themselves at him, but his toe was a fraction quicker.
Thud—!
The ball deflected off a defender's boot and spun into the net.
Ripple—!
2–1. Comeback!
Tweeeeeeet—!
The final whistle blew at the same instant.
Haeseong Elementary School—city tournament champions with a perfect record.
"Aaaaaaah!"
The boys collapsed onto the grass in tears. Coach Kim Pan-seok hugged his staff and sobbed openly. The eternal bottom-feeders, the walking three-point ATM known as Haeseong, now stood at the very summit of the city tournament.
Gang-cheol clenched the captain's armband tight and looked up at the stands.
Team Leader Choi Hyeon-seok had removed his sunglasses and was on his feet applauding. Beside him, German scout Hans Schmidt closed his notebook with a stunned expression.
Choi mouthed the words:
You crazy bastard. You actually did it.
Gang-cheol closed his eyes with a satisfied smile.
The "country king" era was over. Next stage: the nation, then the world.
After the awards ceremony, behind the stadium.
LK Group Team Leader Choi Hyeon-seok quietly called Gang-cheol over. Against the backdrop of the sunset-drenched field he clicked his tongue and closed his tablet PC.
"Ma Gang-cheol. I'll be honest. My prediction was wrong."
"Sir?"
"The numbers in the reports, the data... none of that means anything anymore. What you just showed can't be explained by figures. In short, your vessel has grown too big to keep rolling around in this little neighborhood."
Choi stared straight at him—not the gaze one gives a prospect, but the gaze one gives a high-value investment asset.
"So I reported it to the Chairman. I almost sent you to Europe right away."
Gang-cheol's eyes lit up. Europe—the dream of his past life and the goal of this one. But Choi shook his head and pulled a document from his coat.
5th Hwarangdaegi National Youth Soccer Tournament
Entry Application Form
"But I cancelled it. If you leave now you're just 'talented Asian kid A.' You could get sold cheap and rot on the bench. LK has no intention of treating you like bargain-bin goods."
Choi's eyes flashed sharp.
"Prove it, Gang-cheol. Conquer the nation. Show with results that you've already left Korean elementary level far behind. Then..."
He briefly revealed another planning document behind the form. The title read LK Global Youth Cup Hosting Proposal, and the emblems of elite clubs—Barcelona, Manchester City, and more—were stamped across it.
"I'll bring the world into your living room. I'll make those arrogant European scouts line up in front of you."
Gang-cheol took the Hwarangdaegi application. The crimson sunset of 2013 fell across the paper with solemn weight. The sequence was perfect. National title first, then devour the world's best prospects on home soil, and enter Europe like an emperor.
"You're really laying the board out properly."
He grinned and clenched his fist. A new quest rose into his vision.

"Ready, Ma Gang-cheol?"
"Ready... I've been ready since my past life."
He looked back. In the distance his Haeseong teammates waited for him, and beside them his classmate Han Se-hui stood with arms crossed, glaring his way.
"Let's go. To Gyeongju."
The stage was now the entire nation.
