Demon King Perlerina Breaks the Chain of Hatred
New Character [Demon King]
With Act 2's episode essentially wrapping up, a new limited character made her debut.
Lina the Demon King, whom players had carried through the entire episode, raising her along the way.
Though Act 2's story ended on an awkward note due to the sudden mid-story twist, players had shared every step of that journey.
As a result, players erupted in cheers at the new character's launch.
Most players were drawn to pull for the character based on the narrative she'd shown in the story, her personality, and overall appeal.
However, a significant number of players had one key demand—the inescapable fate of gacha characters: performance.
With three limited characters now in the pool, more players lacked a full roster.
Those who'd missed Knight Ren or Saint Kate due to bad luck on starter or mine resources.
Those who'd joined late and never even got a shot.
Those who'd skipped one because it didn't vibe.
Each had their reasons for not owning everything.
I don't have that character. But that guy does.
Players soothed themselves by sour-graping others' pulls, like the fox muttering, "Those grapes are probably sour anyway."
To survive the cutthroat community, they had to prove their own characters' superiority.
And the yardstick for superiority? Naturally, performance.
Superior burst damage, or
irreplaceable support niche.
Even without competitive modes, players ranked characters to justify their rosters and spending.
Thankfully, the new weekly boss Abyss Assassin—with its fair difficulty, tricky patterns, and solid HP pool—provided the perfect testing ground.
In the midst of all this, a new character dropped with killer story hype.
The community plunged into chaos, eagerly awaiting pickup banners.
"How should I set Demon King Perlerina's performance?"
I pondered ahead of her launch.
Story-wise, Lina wields the authority of the Demon King lineage.
You know, the whole "This woman's got the power to destroy the world!" vibe.
Releasing such a powerhouse as weak sauce? Doesn't make sense.
But cranking her up to match that lore? New problems arise.
It threatens the standing of prior characters.
Take the first pickup, Knight Ren—a straight DPS dealer.
Regular 4- and 5-stars being weaker than newbies? Fine.
But if my pull gets powercrept soon after? Rage incoming.
Say there's a char Ricardo who deals 10 damage over 1 second normally.
Then King of the Locker Room drops, doing 20 in the same time, same style.
Veteran boomers BTFO. Game's fun again lol.
Instant backlash.
"What happens to my Ricardo?!"
"Gonna whale on the new one after seeing whales freak?"
But nerf King to 10 damage? "Boring" skips.
As ops, we need players to feel the novelty, crave the pull.
Most effective? Powercreep old chars into irrelevance.
But that tanks retention amid backlash.
There is a way to powercreep while minimizing salt.
Make King burn 50% HP for a Suction state to hit 20 damage.
New char risks more for bigger numbers—feels like an upgrade.
But riskier mechanics, tougher handling keep it from fully replacing olds.
Tons of Earth devs pulled "sidegrade/upgrade-that-isn't" tricks like this.
Having seen it all, I decided to borrow the vets' wisdom.
"Knight Ren is single-target DPS."
So next dealer gets AoE. Perfect, since she uses lava.
Separate free server for the Demon God
Her beloved master's character is launching.
"I can do this, right?"
The Demon God trembled, awaiting pickup time.
"I'll pull her no matter what."
Demon King Lina draped a blanket over her.
Lina's warm hand thawed the Demon God's icy ones, but the shakes persisted.
"You always do this. What're you even pulling for?"
"Well..."
The Demon God mumbled, unable to spit it out.
Couldn't admit she was stressing over failing to pull her master's char.
Having heard all about the Demon God's state from him, the real Lina just giggled inwardly.
"It's here!"
Pickup time hit. The Demon God flung open the gacha screen.
The Akashic Archive tome pierced dimensions, unfurling in a rainbow glow.
"Please! Come to me, Master!"
Out popped...
"I shall ask. Art thou my Master?"
A bald, buff dude.
"..."
The Demon God stared, then wailed at the result.
She spaced out forever, denying reality.
"Nooooooo!"
Waiting changed nothing. Despair set in.
"Why?! Why not Linaaa!"
Her grief was so absurd, even the real Lina was baffled.
"Demon God."
"...What."
Sniff.
She turned, wiping secret tears.
"This says... pay enough real money and you get extra Sage Stones?"
"...Huh?"
The Demon God blankly tapped the ( ) next to Sage Stones.
A shop popped up: trade real cash for in-game currency.
Her face lit up.
"Just wait, Lina! I'll save you!"
She zoomed off to demand sacrifices from the current Demon King.
The real Lina alone remained, chuckling wryly.
"...What an idiot."
But the true trial hadn't arrived yet.
