The World Rendered in Green
They say disaster strikes without warning, but honestly, that's only half true.
For nearly ten years, working as an operator, one thought had crossed my mind every single day.
If you could gather enough material from countless sources, aggregate data in real time, and weave that data into meaningful information—shape it all into one complete picture—
The world was always showing a different landscape.
'Every expedition that ended in slaughter had something wrong with it from the very beginning, if you picked it apart.'
Reckless schedules. Ignored safety protocols. Operator opinions dismissed out of hand. The arrogance of whoever held the final say.
We called that "human error."
Of course, disasters that truly couldn't have been predicted—the ones born of insufficient information, unknowable and unavoidable—did exist too.
But that was only how it looked from our vantage point.
'If the world could gather every last scrap of information and weave phenomena from it...'
Maybe disasters wouldn't exist at all.
KUUUUGUGUGUNG—!
"The heat—! The heat—!"
"Somebody put out the fire!"
"The equipment we brought isn't enough for this—"
Swallowed by the rising heat, everyone who had entered the Resonating Room scrambled about in a panic, desperate for any way to smother the blaze of temperature.
"Why aren't the coolers running?! Detonate the cooling packs, now!"
"It's not working! The range is way too wide, and the heat keeps reflecting back in—it won't cool down no matter how much we chill it!"
But their judgment was wrong.
Because the real threat here wasn't some heat that merely cooked your skin.
It was scorching, yes, but not immediately lethal—and the true danger was the result all that heat was producing.
'The crystals are vibrating.'
The sound of crystals that had endured the accumulated heat until they crossed a critical threshold, now beginning to resonate.
That vibration shook the entire cavern.
KKWAZIJIK!
Crystals shattered from the ceiling and walls, spraying everywhere. As razor-sharp shards poured down like rain, a colossal shadow uncoiled from between the collapsed walls and revealed itself.
Every crystal glittering on the walls had been its scales, its hide all along. An overwhelming presence, as if the cavern itself were alive and moving.
The true master of this room.
"Hah... hahk..."
A size in a completely different league from anything that had shown itself until now. Even in a situation where mana detection was nearly useless, the sheer wrongness rolling off it crushed everyone where they stood.
Under that pressure, even Kang Minho—who had been rampaging moments ago—went silent for a breath.
"Ha... haha."
A twisted, half-deranged smile crept across Kang Minho's lips.
'Has the fear driven him insane?'
That was what I thought, briefly. Then again—hastily assembled as the project had been, this was still personnel vetted and brought in by [Arc].
"R... right. All I have to do is kill that thing, isn't that it?"
Muttering like a madman, Kang Minho re-gripped his battleaxe.
The air was thick with seething heat, crystals exploding as they fell from the ceiling, [Arc]'s support team shrieking and scrambling in pandemonium—
And yet, while he seemed anything but sane, paradoxically he'd made exactly the right call as a hunter.
'Not bad, actually.'
There was nowhere to run anyway.
He'd instinctively grasped that fighting back wasn't merely the best way to minimize casualties—it was the only path to the best possible outcome.
"Support team! What are you doing?! Buffs, now! Open me a road!"
At Kang Minho's roar, [Arc]'s support team—still teetering on the edge of chaos—moved on pure reflex.
KYAAAAAAAK!
Facing the Crystal Serpent as it slithered forward, boasting its overwhelming size and grandeur as if it would devour everything at any moment, they built him a road.
WHIIIIIR—!
Dozens of support drones soared up, creating footholds where moments ago there had been only empty air.
At the same time, countless auxiliary abilities swarmed Kang Minho's body, wrapping him in radiant light, lending him their strength.
FLASH!
Weight reduction. Strength amplification. Speed acceleration. Fire resistance—
Drenched in the glow of every blessing imaginable, draped in artifact after artifact, Kang Minho looked for all the world like a hero clad in the benedictions of heaven and earth alike.
It was, admittedly, the moment that made it obvious why modern hunters run their expeditions through corporations.
And Kang Minho—hoarding all of that support for himself alone, uncooperative, personality fractured, notorious throughout the industry though he was—
'That "One-Man Army" nickname wasn't just something he won at a card game, apparently.'
The gall to charge in without flinching in that situation. Instant judgment. And the charisma to rally his teammates somehow, no matter what.
His personal combat ability, at least, was the real deal.
TADAT!
Kicking off a drone he'd ordered deployed, Kang Minho launched himself skyward through the pandemonium.
FUUUWOOK—
The Serpent opened its maw and spat a breath of flame, but Kang Minho twisted mid-air and dodged it impossibly, cleanly—finally arriving above the creature's head.
HWARURUK—!
The flames he had suppressed—kept banked to avoid agitating the crystals and feeding the heat—erupted back to life, fiercer than ever.
Mana packed into the battleaxe detonated, and flames several times larger than the axe itself blazed along its arc, tracing its trajectory in fire.
One strike, one kill.
A single blow to burst even an overwhelming monster apart.
"DIE!!"
The moment Kang Minho brought the axe down, a colossal torrent of flame swallowed the Serpent's head.
FUUNG—
'......'
Or rather—that was how it looked.
But without even the sound of impact, the flames simply billowed upward into nothing. As everyone stood frozen, unable to process what they were seeing, I alone understood what had just happened.
'...It cut through empty air.'
It was a monster's trick, one that weaponized the environment itself to the extreme.
The Crystal Cave's fundamental nature—vision warped by light refraction and reflection, mana flow too scrambled to read, mirage-like phenomena rising naturally from all of it.
And the native creature's craftsmanship, elevating that nature even further.
It had looked like a clean hit, but Kang Minho's axe had passed straight through the Serpent's head and cleaved nothing but air.
The real one was moving half a beat behind.
SHIIIK—!
And what it meant for a one-strike, one-kill attack—that had poured out nearly all of his power—to miss completely was simple:
'His balance is shot.'
It had handed over a perfect counter.
Kang Minho staggered, thrown off by the wild swing. The Crystal Serpent didn't miss that opening—its tail lashed out like a whip and slammed into him.
"KUHEK?!"
PPWAKEK!
With a strangled cry, Kang Minho's body flew through the air like a shell and was smashed against the wall.
KUDANGTANG!
"T—Team Leader!"
The instant everyone plunged into shock—
The greatest opportunity reverted into the worst catastrophe.
The massive flames Kang Minho had unleashed at full power reflected off the Serpent's body right beside him, striking the walls again, then the ceiling—
FLASH—!
And into the gimmick of the Resonating Room, which had briefly stalled, another log was shoved onto the fire.
Every crystalline surface began absorbing that light, and reflecting it, and absorbing it again.
Past this point, no pair of sunglasses was going to cut it.
Like staring into the sun at arm's length, a white blaze swallowed his entire field of vision.
"AAAAGH! My eyes!"
"I can't see—I can't see anything!"
A perfect Whiteout.
The world turned into a hellscape painted entirely in white.
And within that white hell, just as the Crystal Serpent's terrible resonant scream promised the follow-up blow—
KIIIIIIIING—
"R—Run!"
"Ah, DAMN it—I'd run if I could see anything!"
Even in the flesh-searing heat, it was pandemonium—people bracing against walls, feeling along the floor, clawing blindly toward anywhere the vibrations felt distant.
And then...
In that bleached-white world, a single figure began to run.
TADAT.
In light so intense that only the afterimage—the silhouette—should have been visible, I was running toward it.
'Even for me, I figured a flash this intense might leave me blind like everyone else.'
But this works.
The world spread out before my eyes was reflecting a shape entirely unlike before.
A world gone completely white. And across its surface, a green grid rippled—like looking at a world rendered in computer code.
The contours of the floor. The fallen crystal shards. The outlines of people scrambling to escape. And even—the massive form of the Serpent itself.
Every object appeared as a frame drawn in green lines, and within that world, the things that glowed sharpest against the white were impossible to miss.
Not a grayscale world, but a crimson trajectory of danger, still chillingly clear.
And a blue light pulsing deep inside the creature's body.
A world that was simple. And utterly unambiguous.
A world that should never have been visible was whispering a new way of seeing to me, all over again.
'Ha...'
At this point even I had to laugh at the absurdity of it.
The only one with two eyes among the one-eyed. I'd thought that way even before—but—
'Maybe it was entirely my own misunderstanding that my ability is called Crisis Perception.'
Perhaps it was simply the most fundamental act itself—seeing.
No—though, in this state, even things that shouldn't be visible were visible, so who knows.
'Maybe my vision isn't just different—it might be that I perceive the world through a different sensory apparatus entirely. A different architecture of thought.'
It wasn't as if an ability ever came with a neat, predetermined explanation or manual. Maybe the one who'd been limiting my own power was me.
But even so, the conclusion stayed the same.
'Thanks to that, this'll be even easier than I thought.'
I looked down at the [Office Cutter Knife MK2] gripped in my hand.
A situation where the screen of vision had gone white—and where anyone, anyone at all, might as well have been blind.
A red line drew itself across the grid toward me—the instant the Crystal Serpent's tail pulled back, preparing to swing.
SHUK—!
I accelerated preemptively with [Hermes' Wing Boots], like foresight made flesh.
At the very instant the tail was about to touch my body, mana flooded the tips of my feet and repulsive force lifted me upward as if I were floating.
A perfect evasion, by a single sheet of paper's margin.
Then, riding that same trajectory—as though the movement were one continuous flow—I stepped on the creature's tail and leapt upward.
"KYAAAAK?!"
The Serpent, having sliced through nothing but empty air, twisted its body in alarm—but I had already cleared its flailing and landed above its head.
DREUREUK.
'And I can see it.'
Its true position.
The cutter knife's blade, lengthening steadily as I rose into the air, took shape in blue mana in an instant and stretched out to a full meter.
An abstract concept—the very [Sharpness] itself, made manifest. A blade that could cleave anything carved through the creature's blue point, splitting its hide like it wasn't even there.
It looked exactly like a swordsman felling a giant beast with a sword-qi.
SEORUK—
A devastating force in a completely different dimension from when I'd lacked the reach to properly target the metal giant's tendons.
That all-cleaving blade cut with the clean joy of a freshly honed edge, and everything it touched was simply butchered.
JJEOJEOK! KWAAANG!
The creature, which had stood at the center of the room filling every direction with reflected light, toppled—and as the bleached-white world began reclaiming its true colors, what emerged was...
The aftermath of its massive head already crashing to the floor.
In the half-breath where thick dust and the haze of light slowly died down—
With everyone fled except Kim Pildu, [Midas]'s cameraman, who was still filming through that insane spectacle with his camera raised—
The shadow of my back, standing alone, stretched long across the ruined dungeon floor.
