Redefining the Genre
2:00 AM.
Minhae's studio apartment, our hideout.
As soon as the front door closed and the digital lock clicked shut, we collapsed onto the floor as if on cue. The freezing wind of Gwanaksan Mountain, the stench of the outhouse, and above all, the sheer exhaustion from the battle of nerves with the ghost seemed to hit us all at once.
But the fatigue we felt now wasn't the unpleasant kind.
It was more like the thrilling exhaustion felt by a student who just aced the college entrance exam, or a player lying on the pitch after scoring the winning goal.
"Ah... seriously... that was insane..."
Deokhu muttered, staring at the ceiling as he sprawled out, a silly grin spreading across his face.
"Hyung, did you see the ghost's face earlier? I mean, it was a ghost, so it didn't really have expressions, but why does it feel like I saw one...? Anyway, that... the way it turned all mushy and flustered? Wow, in all my life, I've never seen a ghost shrink back in fear like that."
"Have you even seen a ghost before?"
"Well, no, but you know what I mean..."
"To be honest, though, when Lee Yeosa blasted it with the water hose and washed it away, I actually felt a little sorry for it," Minhae chimed in with a giggle.
She crawled over to the fridge and pulled out four cans of beer, tossing them to us.
"Alright, alright! We need an after-party! We can't just let tonight slide. Today is a historic day!"
"Okay, chicken's on me."
While I was picking out three chickens on the delivery app, the crisp sound of beer cans popping echoed through the room.
Pssssht, clink!
We raised our cans high.
"Cheers! To the peace of Gwanaksan Mountain! And to our great cleaning manager!"
"Cheers!"
Gulp, gulp, gulp.
The ice-cold beer slid down our throats.
It felt as though the lingering remnants of tension and fear inside us were being washed completely clean.
"Ahhhh!"
Deokhu let out a satisfied shudder.
"This is the stuff! This is what it means to be alive!"
A short while later, the three chickens we ordered arrived.
As the savory aroma of fried chicken filled the room, we pounced on it like hyenas that hadn't eaten in days.
The crispy skin, the tender meat.
This most wonderfully mundane, worldly taste made us truly realize that we had returned safely to 'reality.'
As she tore into a drumstick, Seyeon looked at me with eyes full of admiration.
"But seriously, Sunbae, you were amazing. Honestly, it was almost a little goosebump-inducing."
"What was?"
"You know, Setting Addition and Casting. At first, I thought they were just like game items. But the way you utilized them... how should I put it? It felt different."
"In what way?"
Seyeon began her analytical breakdown in earnest.
"An ordinary person—or rather, if it were me—would have probably set up a sword that kills ghosts in one hit, or an absolute barrier. Even if a one-hit-kill sword is impossible with Setting Addition, wouldn't an absolute barrier be feasible?"
"Well, that's not a bad idea."
"But Sunbae, you completely rewrote the very concept of the bathroom itself. You took a space where a gruesome murder could occur and turned it into a mere facility under management. As a director, as the author of the story, you twisted the entire genre from horror to comedy... It was absolutely perfect."
Deokhu nodded vigorously, his mouth stuffed with chicken.
"Exactly! That was a stroke of absolute genius! And casting that drunk guy and the grandmother! Wow, who on earth would think of casting a ghost as a 'difficult customer'? Hyung, what is even inside your head? Are you some kind of story surgeon? You literally performed surgery on the narrative!"
The team's pouring praise made my face flush slightly.
"No, no. Stop it. It's embarrassing. I just... got lucky. And it's because you guys did a great job directing their acting."
"Oh, there he goes acting humble again. We all know it was skill, not luck," Minhae laughed, slapping my shoulder.
"To be honest, when you first briefed us on this scenario, I was in absolute despair..."
"You don't have to be honest. I already felt it."
"Ah... really? Hehe. Anyway... when we were saying 'there's no answer' and 'we're definitely going to die'... I was thinking, what kind of messed-up situation is this? But when you stepped up and said you were going to 'flip the board'... wow, I swear I saw a halo behind you."
Minhae's eyes sparkled as she continued.
"I felt so reassured then. Like... as long as we trust this guy, we'll never die. That kind of absolute certainty? Sunbae, you are truly our team's leader and the director of this crazy world!"
"Exactly! God-Minjun! Light-Minjun! All hail!"
Deokhu shouted, holding his beer can like a microphone. Seyeon smiled warmly and chimed in.
"I'll admit it. Your imagination, which used to be dismissed as mere B-movie sensibility, was actually the only weapon that could save reality. No matter what scenario comes up next, I don't think I'll be scared as long as you're with us."
Every single word they said struck deep into my heart.
In the past, my ideas had been ignored and ridiculed by people at school and in the industry.
My scripts had been discarded as sloppy and childish.
But now, the people right in front of me were calling me a genius, a savior.
And in truth, I was saving them.
Their eyes held nothing but genuine trust and respect.
So this is what it feels like.
The emotion a director feels when seeing their staff and actors cheer for their cut. Or the sheer ecstasy a screenwriter experiences when meeting a reader moved by their story.
Even though this wasn't a movie theater screen but a life-or-death scene of an urban legend, for the first time in my life, I felt a profound sense of creative fulfillment.
I took a sip of beer.
Behind the bitter taste of hops, I could taste the sweet flavor of victory.
"Yeah. Thanks."
After expressing my gratitude, a wave of embarrassment washed over me.
"I guess I am pretty amazing, aren't I? So just make sure you follow my lead from now on, Extras 1, 2, and 3."
"Hey! What do you mean, extras! We're main-cast supporting characters. We need to renegotiate our appearance fees!"
"Okay, order another chicken."
We burst into laughter.
The sound of our laughter filled the room.
It was an energy so bright and cheerful that it was hard to believe we were the same people trembling in mortal terror just a few hours ago.
Perhaps this was a form of 'confidence.'
During the first scenario, we were busy running away. During the second, we struggled just to survive. But through this latest scenario, we realized:
The rules of this world are not absolute.
And the power to change those rules according to our will was held right here in my hands.
"Hyung, but I'm really curious about something," Deokhu asked, chewing on a chicken wing. "What do you think will show up next? Now that we've cleared a 1.5-star scenario, is a 2-star next?"
A brief silence fell over the room at his question.
All eyes turned to me.
It was a silence charged with a strange excitement, a mix of curiosity and anticipation.
"Well... I do have quite a few 2-star scenarios on my hard drive," I said, searching my memory. "Like The Haunted Washing Machine, The Cursed Car, or Bunshinsaba?"
"Oh! Just hearing the titles gives me a vibe!"
"A vibe...? You're not scared?" Minhae blinked.
"Well, it's a little scary, but... before, just hearing the titles would make me shudder. Now, my first thought is, 'What kind of setting should we add to smash this one?'"
"Me too," Seyeon said, mimicking the motion of typing on a laptop. "If we combine the skills we have now, Setting Addition and Casting, I feel like we can turn almost any urban legend into a comedy. For example, if it's The Haunted Washing Machine, we could add a setting like 'This washing machine purifies ghosts and sends them to the afterlife when washed,' and then cast a local laundromat owner to run it."
"Bwahaha! That's brilliant! Ghost laundry!" Deokhu roared with laughter. "What about The Cursed Car? What if I cast an auto repair shop owner, pretend to change the engine oil, and pour holy water in instead?"
"That's good too. Or we could lure it to a junkyard and crush it."
Ideas poured out.
Of course, they might not all be feasible, but the mere fact that our attitude had shifted so drastically was deeply satisfying.
As if we were in a planning meeting brainstorming our next project, we babbled about all sorts of bizarre strategies against disasters that hadn't even arrived yet.
The fear was fading.
To us, the scenarios were no longer disasters to avoid, but quests to conquer and a playground where we could unleash our abilities to our hearts' content.
Of course, we couldn't afford to let our guard down.
As the star ratings rose, the scenarios would become more complete, and the logic of the urban legends would become tighter. Setting Addition and Casting might not always be a skeleton key.
But it didn't matter.
Because we can do it.
I looked at the shining eyes of my teammates.
Seyeon, the meticulous analyst; Deokhu, the tech genius; Minhae, the vanguard of action. And me, Kim Minjun, coordinating everything and bringing the story to completion.
As long as we were together, I was certain we could rewrite even the most nightmarish scenario into a 'happy ending'—or at least a 'satisfying ending.'
"Alright."
I downed the rest of my beer in one go.
"This is the first time in my life I've actually looked forward to next Monday."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
"The next assignment will come soon. But just like you guys said, I'm not nervous or scared. I'm going to have some real fun with it this time."
"Hell yeah! Bring it on!" Deokhu threw a punch into the air.
We laughed and talked late into the night. The chicken disappeared and the beer cans piled up, but our conversation showed no signs of stopping.
Outside the window, the faint light of dawn was beginning to break.
"Ready for the next scene?" I asked.
The three of them shouted in unison.
"Ready, action!"
Our laughter woke the dawn, and slowly lulled them to sleep.
A bright, cheerful dawn that no darkness could invade.
I kept my eyes open alone, quietly waiting for the next quest.
