The Weight of a Secret
On a sunny weekend afternoon, the park within the apartment complex was filled with the laughter of families. Kim Eunju and her husband, Lee Hyunwoo, were among them, strolling slowly along the path while pushing a stroller.
"Honey, the weather is truly wonderful today," Lee Hyunwoo said.
"It really is. I think Jinwoo likes it, too," Eunju replied, trying to enjoy the rare time they had together. She wished this moment could last forever. But then, a familiar voice cut through the air.
"Hello there, Hyunwoo, Eunju."
Eunju’s face stiffened instantly. It was Lee Han. She tried her best to regain her composure, but her heart began to race, and cold sweat beaded on her palms.
"Hello, Lee Han," she managed to say.
Lee Hyunwoo greeted him warmly and naturally approached the stroller, reaching out a hand toward their son. To her shock, the moment Jinwoo saw Lee Han, he reached out his arms, wanting to be held. Eunju was flustered by her son’s reaction, but she struggled to hide it. Guilt and anxiety churned within her.
Lee Han carefully picked up Jinwoo. A happy smile spread across the child’s face. Watching this, Eunju felt as if her heart were being torn apart. She was tormented by the thought that her own wrong choices were now affecting her son.
"It seems Jinwoo really likes you, Lee Han," Lee Hyunwoo said with a look of surprise.
"Children tend to take to me quite well," Lee Han replied, his gaze shifting to Eunju. When their eyes met, she wavered for a split second. In his eyes, she could still read the desire he held for her. She immediately looked away, forcing an awkward smile. Lee Hyunwoo, completely oblivious to the situation, continued to smile as he watched Lee Han play with his son.
"Jinwoo, let’s go back to Daddy now," Lee Han said, placing the child back into the stroller.
"Well, I’ll be going now. Have a wonderful time."
Once Lee Han disappeared, Eunju let out a sigh of relief. But at the same time, an even greater sense of guilt and anxiety washed over her. She had thought her relationship with Lee Han was over, but the fact that he still existed in her daily life terrified her.
"Eunju, you don't look well. Let’s head home," Lee Hyunwoo said with a worried expression.
"Yes... I’m not feeling very well. Let’s go," she replied quickly. She wanted to escape this situation.
Back home, Eunju went straight to the bedroom. She told Lee Hyunwoo she needed to rest and lay down on the bed. But sleep would not come. Instead, an endless sense of despair engulfed her.
'How can I get out of this situation...'
Eunju repeated the thought over and over in her mind. The relationship with Lee Han, the betrayal of her husband, the guilt toward her son Jinwoo... all these emotions were strangling her. In contrast to the clear sky visible outside the window, her heart was growing darker by the second.
She closed her eyes, but even then, Lee Han’s face, Jinwoo’s smiling expression, and Lee Hyunwoo’s warm gaze kept surfacing. She knew she had to resolve this somehow. But without finding a way, she could only lie in bed and endure the agonizing time.
Outside, she could hear Lee Hyunwoo playing with Jinwoo. The sound of their happy laughter made her heart ache even more. She wasn't sure if she could protect this family or if she could ever escape Lee Han’s grasp. But one thing was certain: she could not go on living like this.
Eunju slowly rose from the bed. Looking at herself in the mirror, she made a resolution. It was time to set everything right. She took a deep breath and steeled her heart. She didn't know what kind of outcome awaited her, but she could no longer run away. Now, she had to take responsibility for her choices.
—
Early the next morning, after Lee Hyunwoo left for work, she solidified her resolve. She had to end this. With a heavy heart, Eunju pushed the stroller toward the apartment management office.
When she opened the door, Lee Han greeted them with a smile.
"Hello, Eunju. How is Jinwoo doing?"
Lee Han naturally began to play with the child. Watching them, Eunju felt as uncomfortable as if she were sitting on a bed of thorns. Before long, Jinwoo grew tired from playing and fell asleep, and Lee Han sat down next to her.
Eunju closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them with determination.
"Can't we just end this here?"
Her voice was laced with desperation. Lee Han smiled and replied.
"Eunju, what you did to your husband is a sin. That is why you must be punished."
Eunju looked at him with terror-stricken eyes.
"What are you..."
Lee Han’s gaze turned cold.
"Decide how you want to be punished. Will you tell the truth and end it all, or... will you continue to keep things as they are?"
Despair and confusion tangled in her heart.
'What should I do... this is all my fault...'
Tears streamed down her face. Lee Han watched her reaction and continued.
"I’ve given you plenty of time. It’s time to decide."
Eunju covered her face with trembling hands. Countless thoughts raced through her mind: the happy times with Lee Hyunwoo, Jinwoo’s smiling face, and the guilt and fear caused by her affair with Lee Han.
"I... I..."
Her lips trembled. She took a deep breath, looked up, and stared at Lee Han.
"I will tell him everything."
Her voice was filled with resolve.
"I can't live like this anymore. I will confess everything to Lee Hyunwoo and ask for his forgiveness."
Lee Han’s expression twisted for a moment before returning to a blank mask.
"So that is your decision."
Eunju nodded.
"Yes. I must take responsibility for my mistakes. I can't run anymore."
Lee Han was silent for a moment before he spoke.
"Understood. But remember, Eunju. You must bear the consequences of this decision entirely on your own."
Eunju picked up Jinwoo with trembling hands.
"I know. But this is the right thing to do."
She pushed the stroller out of the management office. She could feel Lee Han’s gaze following her from behind, but she did not look back.
She knew the road ahead would be difficult. But for the first time, she felt as if she were becoming free. A sense of liberation, as if a heavy burden had been lifted, filled her, but it was accompanied by a fear of the coming storm. Her steps toward home were heavy, but she knew she had to take responsibility for her choice.
—
It had been several nights of restless contemplation. Eunju had decided to break things off with Lee Han and confess the truth, but reality was not that simple. Courage and fear were constantly clashing within her heart.
Even while preparing dinner, her hands shook. 'I have to tell him today...' she kept telling herself. But when she heard the sound of Lee Hyunwoo coming home, her heart began to race even faster.
"I'm home," Lee Hyunwoo’s voice echoed.
"Welcome back," Eunju replied, trying to keep her voice as normal as possible.
The two sat at the dining table. Lee Hyunwoo talked about his day as usual, but Eunju could barely hear him. Her mind was occupied solely by the thought that she had to confess.
"Honey, I have something to..."
Eunju opened her mouth, then closed it again.
"Hmm? What is it?"
Lee Hyunwoo looked up at her.
"No... it's nothing..."
She was tongue-tied again. His warm gaze only made her heart feel heavier. This situation repeated itself several times throughout the meal. Eunju kept trying to speak, but she couldn't find the courage. Noticing her anxious state, Lee Hyunwoo asked,
"Eunju, is something wrong? You look like you're having a hard time lately."
She looked up in surprise. His eyes were full of worry and love. That gaze made her heart crumble even further.
"No, it's nothing... I'm just tired..."
She forced a smile.
"Is that so? Don't push yourself too hard. Get some rest. I'll do the dishes."
His warm words only made her feel more guilty. She repeated to herself in her mind,
'I really have to tell him now... but why is it so hard...'
The night deepened. Eunju lay awake, staring at the ceiling. Beside her, she could hear Lee Hyunwoo’s peaceful breathing. Listening to that sound, tears flowed from her eyes.
'Tomorrow... I must tell him tomorrow.'
She vowed once again. But the anxiety in her heart continued to grow. Every moment she failed to speak the truth was dragging her deeper into a swamp of despair.
—
It was a peaceful day with warm afternoon sunlight streaming into the living room. On her way back from the grocery store with Jinwoo, Eunju found an envelope placed in front of the front door.
"What is this?"
She picked it up without thinking.
Once inside, she set down the grocery bag and opened the envelope. The moment she did, the blood drained from her face.
Inside were photos of her and Lee Han together. The images were incredibly clear, undeniable, and damning. But what was even more shocking was that in one corner of the photos, Jinwoo could be seen sleeping quietly.
"Ah..."
A small scream escaped her lips.
Her hands began to tremble. The photos fell to the floor, but she didn't even have the strength to pick them up. Eunju collapsed right where she stood.
"If Hyunwoo sees this..."
Her voice shook, and tears streamed down her face. Her mind was in chaos. Who had taken these photos? Who had sent them? And the greatest fear of all: what would happen if Lee Hyunwoo saw them?
Her entire body shuddered. The reality that she could no longer run away crushed her. The moment of confession she had been putting off for so long was being forced upon her.
"What do I do... what do I do..." she muttered over and over.
In her mind's eye, she saw her family falling apart. Lee Hyunwoo’s furious face, his sad eyes, and the image of herself losing everything.
With trembling hands, she picked up the photos.
"So... this is really the end..."
Her voice was filled with despair.
The sunlight was still warm, but Eunju’s heart had turned as cold as ice. She was now standing at a crossroads. Should she confess the truth and lose everything, or continue to live in lies?
In the silence of the living room, where the ticking of the clock sounded unusually loud, Eunju realized the time had come to decide her fate.

—
In the heat of midday, Eunju managed to put Jinwoo to sleep with trembling hands. Her face was pale, and deep shadows were cast under her eyes. With heavy steps, she headed toward the apartment management office.
When she opened the door, Lee Han was waiting for her. That unpleasant smile was still playing on his lips.
"Welcome, Eunju."
His voice was calm. Eunju pulled the mail from her pocket and threw it at him. Her hands were shaking violently.
"What is this! Why are you doing this!"
Her voice was full of anger and terror. Lee Han slowly picked up the mail. His expression remained unchanged.
"I told you to accept the punishment you chose, Eunju."
His words were cold. She collapsed to the floor, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Please... don't do this. Don't destroy my family."
Her voice trembled. Lee Han slowly approached her.
"I will come to see you tomorrow. Think about it carefully until then. I will respect your choice."
Eunju looked up at him. There was no emotion in his eyes.
"I... what should I do?"
Her voice was small. Lee Han didn't answer. He simply pointed to the door and said,
"Go home now. Let's meet tomorrow."
Eunju slowly stood up. Her gait was unstable. As she left the office and headed home, deep fear and despair took root in her heart.
Once home, Eunju sat on the sofa for a long time, unable to move. Countless thoughts raced through her mind: Lee Hyunwoo’s warm smile, Jinwoo’s innocent laughter, and Lee Han’s cold gaze.
"Can I... really keep living like this?"
She muttered to herself. Time passed, and the sun began to set. She slowly rose and stood before the mirror. Her face looked exhausted, but a certain resolve burned in her eyes.
"Yes... I have to live like this."
She whispered softly. Eunju let out a deep sigh. In the end, she decided to give up on facing the truth and chose to live in lies. She believed it was the only way to protect her family.
"I'm sorry, Hyunwoo... Jinwoo..."
Tears flowed from her eyes once more. Outside, the evening glow was painting the sky in beautiful colors. But deep within Eunju’s heart, darkness had settled in. She began a new life, one burdened with lies and secrets.
