The Weight of Guilt and the Predator's Grin
On a sunny weekend afternoon, Kim Eunju and her husband, Lee Hyunwoo, took their son, Jinu, for a stroll through the park within their apartment complex. However, an awkward silence hung between the couple.
Lee Hyunwoo tried to strike up a conversation with Kim Eunju, but he was met with her indifferent attitude. She simply kept walking, her gaze fixed solely on Jinu.
"Honey, isn't our Jinu so handsome? He really seems to be looking more like me every day," Lee Hyunwoo said, his voice bright and cheerful.
"Yeah..."
Kim Eunju’s reply was short and dry, as always.
Lee Hyunwoo lowered his head with a bitter expression. Just then, a woman approached from the other side of the walking path.
"Hello, Eunju! Oh, Hyunwoo is here with you, too."
"Oh, Sujin! It’s been a while. How have you been?"
Unlike the attitude she had just shown Lee Hyunwoo, Kim Eunju greeted her with a welcoming voice. Han Sujin smiled brightly and looked at Jinu in the stroller.
"Wow, Jinu has grown so much. I heard he’s already started walking?"
"Yes, he’s been doing well lately. I’m actually worried he’ll be running around soon," Kim Eunju said, a smile spreading across her face naturally. The two women naturally transitioned from talking about their children to discussing household matters.
"I’m planning to return to work next month. Thankfully, the daycare center in the complex stays open late..."
Han Sujin nodded as if relieved. "That’s a relief. It’s really great that the daycare here is close by and well-managed."
At Han Sujin’s words, Kim Eunju beamed. While chatting, Kim Eunju’s gaze suddenly drifted toward Lee Hyunwoo. He was just quietly pushing Jinu’s stroller, seemingly uninterested in her.
As Kim Eunju and Lee Hyunwoo continued their conversation with Han Sujin, someone else approached them.
"Hello, Sujin!" Park Mina greeted them with a bright smile.
"Mina, it’s been a while! How have you been lately?" Han Sujin welcomed her warmly and embraced Park Mina.
Park Mina soon turned her gaze toward Lee Hyunwoo. A look of embarrassment clouded her face.
"Hyunwoo, I’m so sorry about the mistake I made when I was drunk last time. I’ve been cutting back on alcohol ever since."
Lee Hyunwoo nodded indifferently. "Don't worry about it. Things like that happen."
Watching the exchange between Park Mina and Lee Hyunwoo, a strange feeling stirred within Kim Eunju. Just then, Park Mina shared some news with Han Sujin.
"Oh, Sujin. I have a boyfriend now. I’m going on a date today!"
Seeing the happiness on Park Mina’s face, a doubt flickered in Kim Eunju’s heart.
'Wait, a boyfriend?'
Han Sujin said, sounding envious, "We were like that at that age, too, weren't we?"
The moment she heard those words, Kim Eunju’s mind became chaotic. The suspicions she had harbored about her husband and Park Mina began to waver.
'What if I was just misunderstanding everything for no reason...'
After leaving a hasty farewell to Han Sujin and Park Mina, Kim Eunju pushed the stroller toward home. On the way back, her mind was a mess. While she regretted her actions, a sense of guilt toward Lee Hyunwoo kept rising within her.
'What have I done...'
When they reached the front door of their home, Kim Eunju offered a faint smile toward Lee Hyunwoo. It was a smile filled with remorse. Lee Hyunwoo silently watched his wife’s back. Kim Eunju wanted to say something, but the words wouldn't come out easily.
Calming her trembling heart, Kim Eunju asked Lee Hyunwoo, "Honey, what is your relationship with Park Mina? What was that apology about earlier?"
Lee Hyunwoo looked puzzled. "Mina? We’re just neighbors living in the same apartment. Our commute times are similar, so we just bump into each other and exchange greetings."
He thought for a moment and added, "Oh, the apology? That was because last time, when I was coming home late after a company dinner, Mina was drunk and stumbling, and she bumped into me. I think that’s why she apologized today."
Hearing her husband’s words, Kim Eunju felt as if a part of her heart was collapsing. She was struck dumb, unable to offer any response.
'So, my suspicions were all in vain... Lee Hyunwoo never betrayed me, but I misunderstood everything and made baseless assumptions...'
A deep sense of guilt washed over Kim Eunju. She felt ashamed, so deeply ashamed, of her actions in doubting and failing to trust her husband.
Along with the guilt toward her husband, regret over her relationship with Lee Han surged. She felt a piercing regret for having sought the arms of another man because of a groundless misunderstanding.
Kim Eunju lowered her head, her eyes welling up with tears. She bit her lip to hold back her sobs, but her voice was already trembling.
"Honey, I’m sorry... I didn't trust you and I doubted you. I’m so ashamed and sorry..."
Lee Hyunwoo looked at her face, appearing surprised by his wife’s demeanor. "Eunju, it’s okay. It was a situation that could be misunderstood, and I should have explained it first... I’m sorry."
He pulled his wife into a tight embrace. Hot tears streamed down Kim Eunju’s cheeks. Buried in Lee Hyunwoo’s broad chest, she wept silently.
Lee Hyunwoo patted his wife’s back and whispered, "Are you okay? Why are you crying all of a sudden? You didn't do anything wrong, Eunju."
Kim Eunju nodded, swallowing her sobs.
—
After putting their child to sleep, Kim Eunju quietly entered the room where Lee Hyunwoo was sleeping. He was already fast asleep. His peaceful breathing filled the room.
Sitting tentatively on the edge of the bed, Kim Eunju was lost in thought for a long time. The truths revealed today filled her mind.
'How could I have had such a misunderstanding... Because of my wrong judgment, I doubted Hyunwoo and even ended up in that relationship with Lee Han...'
With a deep sigh, tears welled up in Kim Eunju’s eyes. Her heart felt heavy with guilt and regret.
'I’m so sorry to Hyunwoo... I don't know how to ask for forgiveness for my mistakes. And how am I supposed to end things with Lee Han...'
Complex thoughts weighed Kim Eunju down. She sobbed silently, trying to suppress her wailing while burying her face in the pillow.
'It’s all my fault... Everything is a mess because of me...'
Kim Eunju floundered in despair. The desire to protect her family, the guilt over her relationship with Lee Han, and the worry about how to live her life from now on—she wept for a long time amidst the whirlpool of complex emotions. The pillow was soon soaked with tears.
Looking at the sleeping face of Lee Hyunwoo, Kim Eunju whispered quietly, "Honey, I’m so sorry... Please, forgive me..."
But the only answer was a quiet silence. Kim Eunju buried her exhausted body under the covers and tried to sleep. Her eyes were closed, but the door to her heart would not easily shut.
The night, punctuated by tears and regret, deepened. Only the sound of the clock’s second hand on the nightstand echoed through the silent bedroom.
—
As the morning sun shone warmly, Kim Eunju headed toward the Management Office with a heavy heart, pushing the stroller. She was worried about what to say and where to even begin.
When she opened the door to the Management Office, Lee Han greeted her with a bright smile.
"Hello, Eunju."
Lee Han picked up the child from the stroller and began to play with him affectionately. The child burst into laughter, seemingly happy to be in Lee Han’s arms.
Time passed, and the child, exhausted, fell asleep in Lee Han’s arms. Lee Han carefully laid the child in the stroller and approached Kim Eunju.
Kim Eunju steadied her trembling heart and spoke up.
"Lee Han, I’m so sorry. I’ve had a huge misunderstanding all this time. Because of it, my relationship with Hyunwoo has worsened. I want to return things to how they were."
Lee Han listened to her and wore a strange smile. Then, he whispered quietly into Kim Eunju’s ear.
"If Hyunwoo really were cheating, what would you do then?"
Kim Eunju replied in a firm tone, "That’s impossible. It was just a misunderstanding on my part."
But Lee Han did not back down easily. He dug deeper, reminding her of the fact that she had already doubted and betrayed Lee Hyunwoo once.
"But Eunju, you’ve already doubted and betrayed him once."
At those words, Kim Eunju lowered her head and shed tears. "That was my fault. I’ll probably have to spend the rest of my life atoning for it, but..."

Lee Han wore an ambiguous smile and spoke as if testing her resolve.
"Can you tell Hyunwoo what you’ve done?"
Anxiety gripped Kim Eunju at Lee Han’s words. A strange sense of oppression was felt in his attitude and tone.
'Why is he saying this?'
Even as doubts arose, Kim Eunju tried hard to shake off the anxiety. But Lee Han’s next words made her even more confused.
"If you’ve made up your mind, I’ll go with you. I’ll watch to see if you tell the truth, and if you can’t bring yourself to say it, I’ll tell him for you."
'What? Does he mean to tell Hyunwoo about our relationship?'
Kim Eunju’s heart began to race. Something hidden behind Lee Han’s smile threatened her. It was like the gaze of a predator that wouldn't let its prey escape.
At that moment, a chill ran down Kim Eunju’s spine. This was not the Lee Han she had known until now. His eyes were cold, and his smile seemed to be hiding something.
"Lee Han, I’ll handle it myself, so don't worry. I have to go now."
Saying this, Kim Eunju hurriedly pushed the stroller and exited the Management Office. She felt Lee Han’s gaze stinging her back, but she quickened her pace without looking back.
It felt like a cat playing with a mouse. Overcome with terror, Kim Eunju muttered to herself.
'This isn't the Lee Han I knew... Did I have him wrong all along?'
Lee Han did not move, simply smiling as he watched her back.
"Take care, Eunju. See you next time."
All the way back home on trembling legs, Kim Eunju’s mind was pure chaos. The fear of Lee Han’s true identity and what would happen in the future weighed her down.
Unlike the bright morning sun, Kim Eunju’s future was nothing but dark. A sense of despair, as if she had lost any place to hide, consumed her.
