The Fragile Thread of Trust
Kim Eunju lay alone in the darkness, staring up at the ceiling. The steady, rhythmic sound of Lee Hyunwoo’s breathing from the next room weighed heavily upon her heart.
'Why does he avoid me like this... He’s definitely hiding something from me.'
The seeds of suspicion began to take root in Kim Eunju’s chest.
For the past few months, everything about Lee Hyunwoo’s behavior had been suspicious. The late arrivals, the frequent overtime, and the way he seemed to guard his phone as if it were a secret. Every trivial detail left a fresh scratch on her heart.
Kim Eunju sat up in bed and walked with heavy footsteps toward the room where Lee Hyunwoo was sleeping. She knocked softly and whispered, "Honey, let's talk..."
A moment later, Lee Hyunwoo’s cold voice drifted from behind the door.
"I just want to rest right now. Let's talk later."
Kim Eunju lingered in front of the door for a long time before finally giving up and turning away. In the darkness, her eyes grew red. The distance between them, where she couldn't even share a conversation with her own husband, left her feeling utterly hollow. Leaving the firmly shut bedroom door behind, she headed toward the living room, feeling desolate.
Lee Hyunwoo buried his face in his pillow with a deep sigh. He felt heavy, haunted by the cold way he had answered his wife. But his mind, battered by the endless demands of his work, was filled with nothing but distractions. With a major project looming, his worries were like a mountain. And on top of that, his wife’s sharp, biting attitude.
'Why on earth has she become so sharp... I’m struggling, too.'
A sense of resentment welled up in Lee Hyunwoo’s heart.
'Eunju must be stressed and tired from raising our son, Jinu...'
A part of Lee Hyunwoo’s heart ached, but he was so drained by fatigue that he couldn't find the right words of comfort. He was exhausted by the obsession she displayed every single night.
Closing his eyes against the light leaking into the room, Lee Hyunwoo felt confused. The desire to reassure his wife and the weight of his accumulated fatigue tangled together, clouding his mind. In the end, he decided to soothe his weary body and mind with what little sleep he could get. With a deep sigh, Lee Hyunwoo closed his heavy eyelids.
Kim Eunju was plunged into deep loneliness and disappointment due to the conflict and suspicion surrounding her husband, Lee Hyunwoo. She began to meet with Lee Han frequently to drink coffee and pour out her inner thoughts.
"Lee Han, I’m really having a hard time lately. I can’t even talk to Hyunwoo anymore, and it feels like he’s hiding something."
Kim Eunju’s voice was trembling. Lee Han gently took her hand and nodded.
"Eunju, from what I can see, Hyunwoo is a good man. He must be going through a difficult time, but his love for you surely hasn't changed."
At Lee Han’s tender words, Kim Eunju’s eyes grew red. Lee Han comforted her in a calm tone. Kim Eunju found herself opening up to him, drawn by his considerate attitude and his ability to understand Hyunwoo. The presence of Lee Han, who supported her during such a difficult time, became a great comfort to her.
Even after their conversation, Kim Eunju sat in the Management Office for a long time. Looking out the window, she reflected on her relationship with her husband, Hyunwoo.
'Hyunwoo must love me, too. We mustn't lose the trust between us.'
Even as she made this vow, a sense of doubt still squirmed within her heart.
Lee Han watched Kim Eunju by her side, empathizing with her pain. Whenever she struggled, he offered words of warmth. At the same time, he spoke highly of Lee Hyunwoo and cheered for their relationship.
"Hyunwoo must be having a very hard time, too. He has so much work at the office and so many things to worry about at home."
He encouraged Kim Eunju to try and understand Lee Hyunwoo’s position, constantly reminding her of his positive traits.
"Hyunwoo is a man who does his best in his role. I find it respectable to see him working late into the night for his family. Eunju, try to read his heart."
Despite Lee Han’s warm comfort, the shadow of suspicion still lingered in Kim Eunju’s heart. She wanted to trust Lee Hyunwoo, but on the other hand, every single one of his actions felt suspicious.
'Right, let’s trust Hyunwoo, just like Lee Han said. But can I really do that...'
Kim Eunju repeated this to herself countless times. The suspicion toward her husband was tangled in her heart like a sticky web of thread.
Kim Eunju chewed over Hyunwoo’s late arrivals and cautious behavior, doubting his sincerity. His phone usage history, his time spent out, and even his tone of voice—everything seemed like a suspicious clue to her.
'Am I being too suspicious? No, there’s definitely something going on. Otherwise, Hyunwoo wouldn’t be like this.'
Kim Eunju sighed, trying to steady her confused heart. The seeds of doubt refused to disappear. If anything, as time passed, Kim Eunju’s paranoia only deepened. She fell into a deep contemplation, unable to find a way to resolve the situation.
The next day, Kim Eunju sat on the sofa in the Management Office, lost in thought. Her gaze followed Lee Han as he played with her son, Jinu. Lee Han had Jinu on his lap, playing with toys and having a wonderful time.
Kim Eunju’s heart stirred at Lee Han’s gentle smile and the warm look he directed toward Jinu.
'Lee Han is so kind and good with children... What would it be like if Lee Han were my husband...'
Kim Eunju felt this thought flash through her mind. She was startled by her own feelings, yet she couldn't take her eyes off Lee Han.
"Jinu, do you like this? Shall we try building a tower with these blocks this time?"
Lee Han handed a toy block to Jinu with a bright smile. Jinu burst into a clear, happy laugh and grabbed the block. A natural smile spread across Kim Eunju’s lips as she watched them. Lee Han’s presence made her heart flutter.
A moment later, Lee Han approached Kim Eunju, carrying Jinu.
"Eunju, Jinu is such a cute and well-behaved child. I enjoy looking after him, too."
Kim Eunju nodded at Lee Han’s words.
"Lee Han, you’re really good with children. Hyunwoo is so busy these days that he doesn't have time to play with him."
Kim Eunju’s voice was tinged with resentment toward her husband. Lee Han placed a hand on Kim Eunju’s shoulder to comfort her.
"It’s because Jinu is such a good boy that I’m able to play with him so well..."
His words seemed to soothe Kim Eunju’s heart.
Kim Eunju nodded and gave a faint smile. But deep inside, she felt confused, catching herself comparing Lee Hyunwoo and Lee Han. The resentment toward her husband and the affection toward Lee Han were mixed together, tormenting her.
Jinu’s laughter rang out through the Management Office. Watching her son laugh so brightly, Kim Eunju tried hard to pull her complicated feelings together. It was clear that Lee Han’s kind words and actions had shaken her heart. However, her desire to protect her family was also desperate. Kim Eunju let out a deep sigh and looked once more at Lee Han and Jinu playing.
Late at night, after putting her son Jinu to sleep, Kim Eunju sat on the living room sofa waiting for Lee Hyunwoo. Only the sound of the wall clock’s second hand moving in a regular rhythm filled the silence. Kim Eunju’s heart was heavy. As her husband’s late returns repeated, her suspicion only deepened.
At the sound of the front door opening, Kim Eunju looked up. Lee Hyunwoo entered the house with heavy footsteps. He took off his coat and hung it on the rack without a word. At that moment, the scent of an unfamiliar perfume she had smelled before brushed past the tip of Kim Eunju’s nose. Her heart began to race.
'This scent... It still smells like that woman. Is Hyunwoo really...'
Kim Eunju’s mind was tangled with all sorts of suspicions.
Lee Hyunwoo sat on the sofa, looking exhausted, and let out a deep sigh. Kim Eunju approached him cautiously, but she hesitated, not knowing what to say. The silence flowing between them grew heavier.
"You look very tired again today..."
Kim Eunju spoke in a small voice. Instead of answering, Lee Hyunwoo nodded and picked up the television remote. His indifferent attitude made Kim Eunju’s heart feel even more troubled.
'Why can't I say anything... If this keeps up, our relationship might really be over...'
Kim Eunju’s heart broke with regret and sadness. But she couldn't say a word, afraid that she might wake the child or make their relationship even worse. She sat beside Lee Hyunwoo and stared at the television screen, but nothing registered in her eyes.
Between the couple sitting on the sofa, only the unfamiliar scent and the heavy silence lingered. Kim Eunju suffered in the midst of growing suspicion and anxiety. The desperate desire to protect her relationship with Lee Hyunwoo collided with her suspicion of him, making her suffer. As the night deepened, Kim Eunju’s heart was filled with dark clouds.
Kim Eunju sat on the sofa in the Management Office, watching Lee Han play with Jinu. Lee Han held Jinu in his arms, gently rocking the stroller and whispering affectionately.
"Jinu, shall we have some fun with Uncle? Let’s let Mommy rest for a while."
At his soft voice, Jinu gave a happy laugh, and even Kim Eunju’s heart felt at ease.
Grateful for Lee Han’s thoughtful consideration, Kim Eunju leaned back on the sofa and closed her eyes for a moment. She had fallen into a deep sleep before she knew it, and only opened her eyes much later. When she woke up, Jinu was sleeping comfortably in the stroller, and she had fallen asleep leaning on Lee Han’s shoulder.
Flustered, Kim Eunju sat up and muttered.
"Oh, Lee Han... Um... I’m sorry. I must have fallen asleep for a moment."
She lowered her head to hide her reddened cheeks. Lee Han looked at Kim Eunju with a bright smile.
"It’s alright, Eunju. You must have been very tired."
His gentle tone warmed Kim Eunju’s heart.
The two shared a gaze for a moment, maintaining an awkward silence. Kim Eunju felt her heart shaken by Lee Han’s sincere look. An inexplicable emotion was surging within her chest. It was as if an inner voice was leading her toward Lee Han.
"Lee Han, thank you so much. For always helping me like this..."
Kim Eunju whispered in a trembling voice, leaning toward Lee Han little by little. Confusion and affection were crossing in her eyes.
Lee Han looked at Kim Eunju and smiled softly. His warm gaze seemed to envelop her. Without realizing it, Kim Eunju reached out and gently grabbed the collar of Lee Han’s shirt.
Their faces drew closer and closer. Kim Eunju felt her heart pounding wildly. She was confused between hesitation and desire, but soon, as if drawn by Lee Han’s warm breath, she pressed her lips to his.
The lips that had met softly slowly deepened the kiss. Kim Eunju felt his body heat as she was held in Lee Han’s arms. For a moment, it felt as if all her worries and concerns had vanished, and only a fluttering emotion dominated her.

In the midst of their frantic kissing, Jinu’s crying was heard, and Kim Eunju was startled, pulling away from Lee Han’s arms. Her eyes were filled with a mixture of bewilderment, shyness, and guilt.
"Oh... um... Lee Han, I’m sorry. I made a mistake..."
Kim Eunju stammered, bowing her head. Lee Han quickly stepped back from Kim Eunju and apologized.
"No, Eunju. I’m sorry. This was my mistake."
Kim Eunju shook her head, covering her reddened cheeks with her hands.
"No, Lee Han. It’s my fault."
Her tone was tinged with bewilderment and regret. Lee Han placed a hand gently on Kim Eunju’s shoulder to comfort her.
"Eunju, it’s alright. This was my mistake. It’s absolutely not your fault, so don’t blame yourself. Let’s pretend today never happened."
At his kind words, Kim Eunju nodded.
"Thank you, Lee Han."
The two avoided each other’s gaze in the awkward silence. Kim Eunju approached her son and picked him up. Within her heart, guilt, regret, and a fluttering sensation were mixed, creating a complex emotion.
The kiss with Lee Han brought back a fresh, fluttering feeling that Kim Eunju hadn't felt in a long time. At the same time, the guilt toward her husband, Lee Hyunwoo, was weighing her down.
'Why am I feeling this way...'
Kim Eunju struggled to hide her bitter heart.
Perhaps sensing Kim Eunju’s complex state of mind, Lee Han reassured her once more.
"Eunju, don’t worry too much. We’re both going through a difficult time. It’s best to forget about this."
Kim Eunju thanked Lee Han once more, pushed the stroller, and left the Management Office. However, the complex emotions in her heart still hadn't settled. She was tormented by a mixture of excitement, shame, and guilt. Kim Eunju let out a sigh and headed home. Her heart had become even more confused by the kiss with Lee Han, but she didn't know how to interpret these feelings.
