The Envoys from Yamato
The morning sun rose over the imperial palace of Cheonje, bathing the grand audience hall in a soft, golden light. I stood there in my official robes, trying my best not to yawn. My body felt heavy from the previous night's... activities. Damn it, why did I have to push myself so hard? But then again, looking at the satisfied smiles on the faces of my beloved women this morning, I couldn't exactly regret it.
Still, I really need to get more sleep. My stamina as a martial artist might be off the charts, but my brain is screaming for a nap.
Today was the day the envoys from Yamato would arrive. It was a historic moment, one that could shift the delicate balance of power across the continent. As the Reclusive Master who had somehow become entangled in the affairs of the empire, I found myself standing beside the emperor himself. Talk about pressure.
The grand chamber was filled with high-ranking officials, their colorful robes creating a vibrant tapestry against the polished marble floors. Whispers filled the air like a swarm of bees. Everyone was tense. Yamato had always been an enigmatic neighbor—sometimes sending tributes, sometimes causing headaches with their ambitious schemes. This time, their envoy carried a proposal that could either forge a new alliance or spark conflict that would engulf the entire region.
"Young-hoo," the emperor murmured beside me, his voice low enough that only I could hear. "Do you sense anything unusual?"
I focused my qi, letting it spread outward like invisible threads. The familiar energy of the palace guards, the subtle undercurrents of the officials' nervousness, and... there it was. A faint but distinct presence. Foreign. Sharp. Like the edge of a well-forged katana.
"They're here," I whispered back. "And they're not alone. There's someone among them with considerable skill. Not quite at my level, but definitely a master in their own right."
The emperor nodded slightly, his expression unchanging. To the outside world, he looked every bit the composed ruler of Cheonje. Only I could see the slight tension in his jaw. This meeting carried more weight than most realized.
The massive doors of the audience hall swung open with a resonant boom. A procession of figures in elegant, flowing garments entered. Their clothing bore the distinct style of Yamato—subtle patterns of cranes and waves embroidered in silver thread. At the forefront walked a man who appeared to be in his forties, with sharp eyes and a neatly trimmed beard. His bearing screamed diplomat, but the way he moved revealed the training of a warrior.
Behind him followed several attendants, all carrying themselves with disciplined grace. And then there was her.
My eyes locked onto the woman walking just behind the lead envoy. She was stunning in a way that seemed almost deliberate—like a blade disguised as a flower. Long black hair cascaded down her back, tied with a simple yet elegant ribbon. Her eyes, dark as midnight, scanned the room with quiet intensity. When they met mine, something electric passed between us.
Who the hell is she? Her qi is... different. Refined. Dangerous.
The lead envoy stepped forward and bowed deeply, his voice clear and resonant.
"Your Imperial Majesty of Cheonje, the great nation of Yamato sends its warmest regards and sincere hopes for continued peace between our peoples. I am Fujiwara no Takamichi, chief envoy of His Divine Majesty. We come bearing gifts and a proposal that may benefit both our nations in these turbulent times."
The emperor acknowledged the greeting with a slight nod. "We welcome the envoys of Yamato. Speak your purpose."
As the formalities continued, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. My gaze kept drifting back to that woman. She hadn't spoken a word, yet her presence dominated the room more than the chief envoy's polished words. When our eyes met again, the corner of her lips curved into the faintest smile.
Shit. This is going to be complicated.
The audience dragged on with the usual diplomatic dance—exchanging pleasantries, presenting gifts, discussing trade routes. But underneath it all, I could feel the currents shifting. Yamato wasn't here just to talk about silk and spices. There was something bigger at play.
After the formal session concluded, the emperor invited the envoys to a private banquet that evening. As everyone began to disperse, the woman approached me directly. Her movements were fluid, almost predatory in their grace.
"You must be the one they call the Reclusive Master," she said in perfect, accentless Korean. Her voice was like velvet over steel. "I've heard many stories about you. They don't do you justice."
I raised an eyebrow, trying to maintain my composure. "And you are?"
She smiled again, this time more openly. It was the kind of smile that could make a man's heart skip several beats.
"My name is Aoi. I serve as the... cultural advisor to the envoy. Though I suspect we'll be seeing quite a bit of each other during our stay."
Before I could respond, she bowed gracefully and moved away, leaving behind a faint trace of cherry blossom scent and an unsettling feeling in my chest.
Cultural advisor, my ass. That woman is a walking weapon. And if I'm not careful, she might just be the one to finally make this lazy master break a real sweat.
As I watched her retreating figure, I couldn't help but think that the arrival of these Yamato envoys had just made my already complicated life a whole lot more interesting. And dangerous.
Little did I know, this was only the beginning.
