The Wolf King's Demise
Two hundred thirty-eight.
That was the number of ordinary skeleton soldiers the wolf king had slain.
It also accounted for ninety-eight percent of the wolf corpses Fafnir had laid out in advance.
Naturally, the wolf king’s condition was far from optimal after such a battle.
Crunch… caw…
Countless weapons stabbed into its body, its flanks carved deep with bleeding wounds.
The eyes that once glowed red had clouded like frozen blood, and the muscles that once bulged with power had shriveled like deflated balloons.
Yet the wolf king still lived.
“You… you damn bastard…”
Of course the wolf king was strong.
But the battle wasn’t over yet, and that was the real reason.
“Next.”
Following Fafnir’s orders, the skeleton soldiers moved.
Skeleton No. 3 easily blocked the wolf king’s weakened strike, then No. 2 drove its spear straight into the opening.
It would have been a simple dodge in any other fight.
But the spear tip connected too cleanly.
Clang!
“The team coordination is starting to click.”
At first, No. 2 and No. 3 had been nothing more than toddlers.
Now they were holding their own against the wolf king, blocking and counterattacking with surprising skill.
After hours of fighting the wolf pack and absorbing the wolf king’s charges directly, they had finally learned.
“Koooh! If you’re a warrior, fight me yourself!”
The wolf king spat blood and roared.
Pulling on the last reserve of strength inside its body, it challenged Fafnir to the end.
Naturally, Fafnir gave no answer.
Instead, he simply moved the ordinary skeleton soldiers to block the way.
…Cough!
The skeleton soldiers’ spears pushed the charging wolf king back.
Then the others tightened their nooses once more.
Victory was certain.
Even so, Fafnir stayed hidden.
Grr…
The nightmare began again, and the wolf king’s eyelids grew heavier.
Time passed.
Quest Complete: Defeat the Wolf King
Quest: Omen of War (Magic)
Quest Accepted: Omen of War (Magic) Jeraer’s favorability rose by one. After accepting the quest, Jeraer spoke. “From now on you will head to the northern outpost. There are adventurers on scouting duty there. Join them and bring solid proof.” “Understood.” It was not a new quest but an addition to one already in progress. Other players were probably already clearing orc patrols or scouting. ‘Hilde-nim must be busy too, so I have to go alone this time.’ Fafnir stepped outside and scratched his head. ‘Orcs… I think I’ve heard of them.’ A vague, itchy feeling that might have been memory. After thinking a moment, Fafnir gave up. ‘I’ll remember once I start the quest.’ First, he would get supplies at the Necromancer Guild. “Master, I’m back.” “Oh, I heard from Jeraer. You really did well.” Upon arriving at the Necromancer Guild, Guld looked at Fafnir and spoke. “Still, don’t get too happy. Necromancers are a job of the shadows. If you smile too brightly you’ll draw strange suspicions.” Advice born from direct experience. Yet Guld’s face was filled with laughter as he said it. ‘He must be really pleased.’ Fafnir shrugged and asked. “By the way, Master.” “Hm?” “Do you handle equipment here? Simple staffs or hats…” “I’m sorry.” Guld shook his head. “Other guilds sell such things, but we don’t.” Necromancers are a job that draws bad glances by nature. They often have to flee quickly, so besides essential skill books they could only sell simple accessories. “That’s fine. We fight with skeleton soldiers, we don’t fight with our bodies.” “Exactly! Equipment isn’t a problem.” “Speaking of which, Master, did you hear from Captain Jeraer?” “Hm? What story?” “The wolf king and the green orcs have allied. The orcs are guarding the wolf king.” “Monsters allying with each other? Tell me more.” Fafnir explained what he had seen. The smile left Guld’s face. “The orcs have subjugated the wolves. A big fight is coming soon.” “Orc raids…” For a moment lightning struck Fafnir’s mind. ‘Orc Wave! Yes, I remember!’ Orc Wave. Official name: Demon Rampage! A variety of monsters rose in the beginner zones of every server worldwide. Essentially the first world event in Horizon. About seven months before the novel’s start. Later, when the protagonist Flush grew his character, short mentions of the event appeared. ‘This event’s prelude was the orcs. In this region orcs are dominant, so they launched the raid…!’ Mentioned briefly as dialogue in the original novel. And occasionally when naming high-level monsters. ‘Those who stood out here will become named rankers!’ To do that, he needed to grow faster and more than before. No time to chat here. “Then I’ll head out.” “Wait a moment, disciple.” Before Fafnir could leave, Guld asked. “Heading straight to the guard?” “No, there is one thing left to do before that.” “Something to do?” “I have equipment that needs appraisal.” Joining the guard would mean more busyness, so getting it appraised now would save time. “I see. That’s why you came to me.” Yet Guld’s words sounded strange. “Huh? You mean you came to get me to appraise it?” Fafnir was puzzled. Guld smiled wickedly and continued. “Hm? What do you mean hm? Let me see it.” “You can appraise equipment?” “Of course! Creating homunculi, golems, black magic weapons, all enchantments… that’s exactly our specialty.” “I’ll appraise this one for free. Let me see the item.” “Yes.” Fafnir handed over the bow without hesitation. “Hmph…” As Guld examined the bow closely, his eyes sparkled. “A fine bow.”
