Variant Hunt: The Harpy's Mine Adaptation
I pulled up the Harpy Mine on my screen to observe the Harpy variant up close.
"Where is it..."
It only took thirty seconds of panning around the screen before I spotted it.
'People are gathering?'
A cluster of explorers. The direction they were all staring.
There it was, hunkered down in a slightly wider cavern than the rest.
"Whoa... why the hell does it look like that?"
It was so visually striking I muttered out loud without thinking.
Scales instead of feathers, wings so degenerated they looked more like spindly skewers than proper limbs.
And the biggest feature: its head.
A normal Harpy should've had a human-like face atop a woman's upper body... but this one?
...Peering through its wild mane, there were no eyes, just a gaping maw like a deep-sea anglerfish lined with razor-sharp teeth.
A nightmare straight out of a horror flick.
The dark cave atmosphere amplified the grotesqueness.
Even scarier: despite the explorers keeping their distance, it had its head turned precisely toward them.
"No eyes... yet it's zeroing in on the explorers from that pitch-black space..."
I could see fine thanks to my ability's enhancements, but this thing? No way.
"What, does it have heat vision or infrared sensors? Or maybe... no sight, but super-developed hearing..."
Thinking of the other Harpies hanging bat-like from the mine ceiling, maybe even ultrasonic senses?
"Hmm..."
A hypothesis hit me.
Degenerated eyes and wings.
Didn't it look like it'd evolved to adapt perfectly to the mine environment?
Previous variants I'd seen—like the Slimes and Giant Spiders—hadn't strayed too far from their base forms.
Why was this Harpy variant so drastically different from regular Harpies? Probably the dungeon environment's influence.
Slimes in the hills, Giant Spiders on plains—both straightforward terrains.
But Harpies? A pitch-black hellhole where they couldn't fly anyway due to the low ceilings.
If it'd evolved to detect enemies in the dark and its useless wings atrophied...?
"Hmm... plausible, but..."
No, too few samples to conclude yet.
While I pondered the Harpy variant, the explorers had formed an impromptu party and surrounded it.
"No way they're going for it?"
I swallowed hard, watching intently.
Five explorers.
From what I'd seen on the gallery so far, regular variants were manageable solo at their level.
Except those three-core Slimes, anyway.
How strong was this Harpy variant in combat?
Taat—
The shield-bearing explorer charged forward, the others scattering.
The tank pulled aggro head-on, creating angles for the DPS.
-Kieeeek!!!
Spotting the intruder, the variant let out a horrific screech and charged.
With degenerated wings, its legs were way thicker than a normal Harpy's. Twice the size overall, it barreled in like a ramming dinosaur.
Kwang—!
The shield guy took a body slam and flew back. He wasn't dead, but looked knocked out cold.
"Holy..."
That wasn't a Harpy anymore. Completely different hunting style from what I knew.
Agile hit-and-run from the air? Nah. This was a stubborn tanky rammer.
Like the difference between a Murallie and an Ullari...!!
Still, the opening after the charge let the others stab from flanks and rear.
Kaang— Puk—
-Kieeeek!!!!!!
But of four blades, only two pierced. The rest bounced off tough scales.
"Insane defense too... no way this is same-level fodder?"
Still, as time passed, they adapted to its attacks, landing hits more smoothly.
The variant swung its skewer-arms wildly, gaping its massive jaws to chomp, but the seasoned explorers gave no easy openings.
Dodge one attack, and the others targeted scale-free spots with spears and swords.
It writhed in agony each time.
After ten grueling minutes, it finally collapsed.
"They got it..."
But four out of five were bloodied messes.
No fatalities, but those skewer arms and fangs had grazed them hard.
"...Time for a hotfix?"
No matter how I sliced it, that Harpy variant was overtuned. A three-man party might've wiped.
Solo explorer stumbling into it? Hide-and-seek with death.
I fired off an emergency notice on the gallery.
Title: Emergency Notice for Ticket Dungeons
Author: DungeonMaster
Hello, this is the Dungeon Master.
A Harpy Mine variant monster has been confirmed as excessively powerful beyond expectations.
Closing Harpy Mine and relocating its channel to Orc Plains and Owl Bear Meadow.
Please don't get hurt. Thanks.
"Huh?"
The reactions weren't what I expected. Kinda threw me off.
Title: Isn't the Harpy Variant Fucking Strong and Dangerous?
Author: DungeonMaster
Looked tough even for a 5-man party?
Don't wanna see anyone bite it in my dungeon;;
"Wha-what... stationary monster...?"
I vaguely remembered seeing something like that when scraping monster info from the gallery before.
Anyway, if it wasn't that dangerous, better to leave it.
Title: Canceling the Emergency Check.

My bad for the overreaction.
...I kept scrolling the gallery. Had to check for other issues.
Patches always glitch hardest on day one.
...The heat-baked Mud Crabs of the desert had become ambush Sand Crabs hiding in dunes, and the swamp-bound Rock Lizards sprouted wings.

Go archer, melee bros lol
Flying or not, it's a big fat target, slower than birds.
Tough back, soft belly—bonus mob tbh?
"Hmm... yeah, variants are definitely adapting to environments."
Next up: inner cores.
Time to check those out.
Tons of posts, so I clicked a random one.
Title: Guys, Figured Out What Inner Cores Are Yet?
(Image: Fist-sized red orb)
Smooth and pretty, but no clue what it's for?
All variants drop 'em, so probably key, but nothing revealed??
"Hmmm... nothing figured out yet, huh."
Makes sense—barely two hours post-patch.
Still, some intel gathered, suggestions too. Time to report to Joodak-hyung.
"Busted..."
