Chapter 676: Pitiful to the Point of Being Sad
Chen Jiao sat on the kitchen counter like a defeated hen, spiritless and slumped.
Aunt Huang’s mouth curled with a faint, satisfied smirk as she spoke to Chen Chaoxi with a tone that carried a hint of tattling: “Miss Jiao is worried about Doll in the South, so she wants to know when the General plans to head south.”
A tattletale. Chen Jiao’s eyes snapped up, glaring fiercely at Aunt Huang. She was like a tiger fallen into the valley, being nipped at by dogs. Even a lowly servant dared to trip her now.
But instead of scolding her as Aunt Huang expected, Chen Chaogong let out a long sigh. There was sympathy in it.
His tone softened noticeably as he spoke to Chen Jiao: “This matter won’t progress for now. You should visit the mission center more often. There are missing-person notices posted there, and many survivors from the South have registered records.”
“Why? Didn’t they say the monsters in the South are evolving too fast, and they need to be wiped out early?” Chen Jiao’s voice carried both disappointment and stubborn unwillingness to give up hope.
The farther north you went, the weaker the apocalypse virus became. Northern regions seldom produced those terrifying high-level creatures. The South, however, was mutating faster and faster. Jinmen Base had long planned a southern campaign.
If a species rose too quickly and wasn’t suppressed, it would eventually become a disaster that humanity as a whole could not overcome.
So eliminating part of the southern zombies and mutated creatures had always been part of their strategy.
But Chen Chaogong frowned and shook his head with another sigh.
“Xiaofa has been at Yaoyang Base for a long time. Except for those few planes that returned earlier, we haven’t received any news about him from over there. As for Yang Ziyi, I don’t know what he was doing. He went just to retrieve someone, yet he caused such a mess, and now he himself has gone missing.”
“What? Is Third Uncle… alright?”
Chen Jiao wanted to ask whether Chen Chaofa had another episode, but the words circled in her throat and she swallowed them back.
She had heard that the planes sent to retrieve people and supplies from Yaoyang Base had returned, but while they were there, Chen Chaofa had reportedly ordered the bombing of many civilians. The civilians rioted and attacked the Grand Fortune Hotel, and there was no news of whether Chen Chaofa and Yang Ziyi had been overtaken by them.
Later she heard that the blizzards had become so fierce that even satellites could no longer locate Yaoyang Base, and Jinmen Base had lost its coordinates entirely.
Chen Jiao didn’t really understand the family’s military matters, but she did care a bit about Chen Chaofa. After all, Chen Chaofa was truly pitiful.
A person who saw through everything too clearly would inevitably become tragic, tragic to the point of being pitiable.
Chen Chaofa was simply too smart. Smart enough to become mentally unstable.
“Hard to say.” Chen Chaogong lifted a hand and wiped his deeply lined face. The loss of his wife, children, and grandson had aged him overnight. He looked older than his own father, the retired Old General Chen.
After a moment of silence, he sighed again and told Chen Jiao: “They say the snow will stop falling soon. We will send people toward Yaoyang Base to investigate Xiaofa’s whereabouts. Until we resolve his situation, we have no plans to march south.”
