Chapter 661: Consuming Themselves
The crowd bristled with indignation. From their point of view, An Ran, Zhan Lian, and the others had done the same thing as when Chen Chaofa ordered the bombing of Hexi—treating the lives of lower-level people as if they didn’t matter.
So they felt righteous; An Ran and Zhan Lian were the villains.
Zhan Lian said nothing. He stood and looked at the group, his gaze growing colder and filled with killing intent. He didn’t intend to bargain—if they wanted a fight, he would oblige.
Still, he worried this might play right into Chen Chaofa’s hands, and that thought made him reluctant.
Young and hotheaded, Liu Shasha burst out of the tearoom and shouted at the crowd blocking the entrance, “You slaughter each other—isn’t that something you’ve reflected on? The apocalypse itself isn’t the scary part; the scary part is humans consuming themselves!”
“We’ll kill who we want—what’s that to you? Now that we’re done, we ask you: will you tell Jiang Peng to let us out?”
The leader of the survivors, a burly, blood-soaked man, bellowed threats at Liu Shasha. To him, she was just a woman—one more life he wouldn’t mind taking.
Liu Shasha stamped in anger but tried to reason with them. “If we can’t stop Chen Chaofa in this hotel, given how deranged he is, he’ll cause far more bloodshed later. Don’t you understand? This isn’t the time for settling private grudges.”
“That’s later business,” someone in the crowd shouted. “Whether Chen Chaofa kills in the future is none of our concern. Once we get out, we won’t kill anymore.”
“Don’t you understand? Those wood-type zombies come from the dead. These corpses everywhere could spawn more wood-type zombies—then we’ll all die here.”
“The fire on the top floor could come down at any moment—do you have any compassion?”
The blaze on the top floor probably started because someone found a wood-type zombie and tried to burn them out.
There might still be survivors hiding in corners of the Grand Fortune Hotel. If exits remain blocked and wood-type zombies keep appearing, the fire could flare up again and everyone would be burned alive inside.
An Ran rose slowly from her wooden chair, turned to the feral crowd outside the tearoom, and stood behind Zhan Lian.
She addressed them: “You’re not going out. There are only two choices: either go kill the wood-type zombies inside the hotel, or sit here quietly and let me have you bound. Once we identify Chen Chaofa among you, the rest will be allowed out.”
“Chen Chaofa? I think you’re Chen Chaofa in disguise!” The leader lunged at An Ran.
Zhan Lian struck the man with a bare hand, sending him flying from the tearoom steps into the marble wall several meters away.
He fell, teeth broken and spitting blood.
An amateur killer has no match for a professional.
Gasping and spitting blood, the man shouted to the crowd, “If you want to live, kill these people! Only by doing that do we stand a chance of surviving! Chen Chaofa is among them!”
