Chapter 65: It's All Dark
Chapter 65: It's All Dark
“Go to sleep; it will be dawn when you wake up.”
An Ran sighs. What else can she do? She isn’t an electrician! All she can do is lie back on the bed, close her eyes, and attempt to drift off. Suddenly, the sound of the security door opening echoes down the quiet corridor, followed by footsteps approaching. Chen Jiao’s voice breaks through the darkness.
“Hu Zhen! Hu Zhen! Where are you? I’m so scared. It’s all dark. Where are you? There are zombies screaming downstairs.”
“Here.” Hu Zhen shouts as his eyes adjust to the dim light.
The moonlight and starlight filtering through the window illuminate a slender figure entering from outside the door. It is Chen Jiao.
An Ran turns over in bed, shutting her eyes to ignore Chen Jiao. She just argued with her earlier that day and has no desire to deal with this delicate girl now.
However, Hu Zhen is soft-hearted and too kind. He gets up, pulls Chen Jiao over, helping her avoid the patch of wildflowers and the baby crib scattered all over the floor. He brings Chen Jiao to the area where he and An Ran have laid out their bedding, allowing Chen Jiao to sleep on his bed, right next to An Ran.
Naturally, An Ran can’t sleep next to such an annoying person. She gets up and says to Hu Zhen in the dark, “You can take my bed.”
“What about you?” Hu Zhen asks, feeling a bit troubled.
An Ran has already found the two fruit knives she keeps next to the pot of carnations. She stands up and walks over to the doll’s crib, pushing it out into the hallway.
Given how chaotic the outside world is, An Ran doesn’t want to argue with Chen Jiao anymore. Rather than waste time squabbling, she would rather go out to find some supplies and kill some zombies. So, she takes the doll and stealthily makes her way from the fifth floor to the fourth floor, returning to her own hospital bed. She places the doll in the small crib beside her bed, savoring the feeling of loneliness in the dark.
Unknowingly, she drifts off to sleep like that.
The next day, it is still dark when the baby wakes up hungry and begins to cry. An Ran sits up, takes her out of the crib, lifts her clothes to feed her, and opens the bedside table with her other hand to start counting her supplies.
To her dismay, there is nothing in the bedside table. She has nearly exhausted her vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc, and other supplements during her pregnancy. Since she has to come to the hospital alone to give birth, she hasn’t brought any valuables. All her supplies have been packed into the mother’s bag and later placed in the bedside table upon her admission.
The only other item is a half-used maternity bag. Lochia is still flowing, but An Ran has clearly given up on worrying about it. It feels dirty either way, and she thinks it might be refreshing not to use sanitary napkins at all.
She has a few sets of clean pajamas in her drawer. It is autumn now, and she has prepared long clothes and pants for herself, fearing that it will get colder when she is discharged from the hospital. She has even packed a woolen coat. However, An Ran hasn’t prepared anything for her confinement period.
She has been considering hiring a confinement nanny, so whether she is prepared or not, she plans to rely on the nanny’s guidance in the future.
Inside the mommy bag are essential documents like household registration books, ID cards, hospitalization certificates, and bank cards. These items need to be kept safe, as they will still be useful when they return to human society.
