Chapter 548: Take the Hard Way
Chapter 548: Take the Hard Way
Fatty’s smug expression irritated An Ran so much that she waved her hand and slapped him hard across the face while he was still focused on eating.
At once, he shrank his neck and nodded quickly. "Yes, yes, Captain, you’re right!"
This man never responded to gentle words—only force worked on him.
So everyone agreed once again: they would stay inside the base and stop wandering around. As for Fatty’s request for a villa, that was fine. A beating from An Ran was all it took to settle him down.
The cunning fat man behaved like this with anyone. As soon as the tunnel was opened, he began playing theatrics, pretending to be the innocent and pitiful one.
From the outside, their group looked like a large gathering of elderly, weak, sick, and pregnant women, who had been brought north from the south by selfless soldiers who risked everything to protect them. Naturally, Fatty never mentioned the tunnel. Instead, he claimed it was dug out by the earth-type ability users and the imprisoned strength users. According to his version, it was the soldiers, along with all the powerless young men, who had toiled endlessly until they finally broke through.
Some might have been suspicious, but it didn’t matter. Fatty never denied there were earth-type users in his team—he even admitted there were “a few.” No one knew exactly how many.
Once the tunnel was opened, their large group of survivors quickly drew the attention of the base on the other side.
With Luo Feifan and Zhang Boxun’s advance notice, the base sent pioneers to investigate within an hour. Fatty immediately gathered a few frail old people, several heavily pregnant women, and mothers holding children. They stood miserably at the tunnel entrance, clutching broken bowls and begging for food.
An Ran, inside the tunnel, was stunned by the sight. She, too, held a baby wrapped in a thick cloak.
Zhang Boxun and Luo Feifan stepped out of the tunnel with frowns, beginning a conversation with the explorers.
The explorers arrived in a single car—five or six uniformed soldiers with decent attitudes. After surveying the scene, they briefly reported to their base over a walkie-talkie. Moments later, another vehicle arrived.
The people in this car were a sharp contrast to the soldiers. Because of the bitter cold, most stayed inside. Only one man, wearing an expensive mink coat, lounged in the passenger seat. He spoke idly with Luo Feifan for a long time before reluctantly stepping out into the wind.
He glanced into the tunnel and saw only a crowd of pitiful people begging for food. Frowning, he turned back, gave a few curt instructions, muttered something to Luo Feifan, and then drove away.
An Ran, holding Doll, squeezed past the crowd and reached the tunnel entrance, intending to ask Luo Feifan what the mink-coated man had said.
The remaining soldiers, watching the heavy snow outside, also prepared to leave. One of them pulled out a few packets of biscuits from their vehicle and handed them out. He stuffed one into An Ran’s arms as she approached, then gave another to an elderly man and a pregnant woman before turning away.
