Chapter 527: Can I Give Them All to You?
Fatty greets An Ran enthusiastically. “Where are you going? Back to the car?”
An Ran glances at him and waves him over. He runs up, his fat body shaking. Before he can even catch his breath, An Ran asks, “You’re so calculating. Why didn’t you save some crystal cores for your water-type ability users? If you let them train like this, even if they survive the rest of their lives, their level won’t reach one-tenth of Zhao Ru’s.”
“I have no choice. We’re just powerless encumbrances. How could we get crystal cores?” Fatty replies, his tone fawning. He adds, “You have plenty of crystal cores—why not give us some?”
An Ran, clutching the thermos, presses on. “You really want to rely on me, don’t you? If I give you crystal cores, what do you give me in return?”
“Water and food.”
“You already have to provide those anyway. Your safety depends on us now. Water and food are what we deserve.”
Hearing this, Fatty looks at her with a mournful expression, his weakness obvious. “Then tell me… what do you want? Aside from my life, can I give you everything else?”
“That’s not necessary. If the ability users under your command level up, it adds extra security for our northward journey. What I mean is, you can’t always rely on others for protection. If nobody can protect you, you’ll have to go begging. You need to think for yourselves, organize, and take action—kill rats and zombies. As long as you’re willing to put in the effort, life will always reward you.”
Fatty nods rapidly, obedient on the surface. “You’re right, you’re right. But how do we kill rats and zombies? These monsters are almost unstoppable now.”
“Look.” An Ran points to a ridge not far ahead. Weeds thickly cover the ridge, and a layer of ice coats the field. Some straw, frozen solid, clings to the ridges. “There are some mutant earthworms in the field, buried in the frozen soil. They’re not high-level. I’ve already dealt with some. The rest are just newly grown, about the size of ordinary earthworms, no thicker than a thumb. Have someone dig them up and extract the crystal cores.”
The crystal cores in these ordinary mutant earthworms are extremely basic. Even Zhao Ru won’t bother with them now, let alone An Ran. If Luo Feifan and Zhan Lian see these lying on the ground, they won’t even bend down to pick them up.
But Fatty’s team needs them.
If all his water-type ability users can grow to the point where they can control water zombies, they won’t have to suffer as much during the apocalypse, even without An Ran and Zhan Lian’s protection.
Fatty turns to look at the ridge An Ran indicates. The frozen ground stretches desolate before him. Mutant earthworms beneath it?
He looks back at An Ran. She nods at him, offering an encouraging smile.
Fatty’s face crumples, more pitiful than tearful, and he sighs in agreement.
To be honest, Fatty knows the Beggars’ Sect inside and out. He has no ambitions beyond survival. He is content playing the pitiful role, organizing a few elderly people and children to beg, and keeping them safe.
