Chapter 507: This Is Benevolence and Righteousness
In a residential building, Fatty was still lazing in bed with Xu Li’er when a knock sounded on the door. He hastily threw on a pair of shorts, his body wobbling as he got up. Pulling on his clothes as he opened the door, he listened to the visitor’s brief report, nodded, and ordered them to organize the evacuation of the elderly, the weak, the sick, the disabled, and pregnant women.
Behind him, in the dim light, Xu Li’er sat up with the quilt wrapped around her. Goosebumps rose on her bare arms from the cold. She glared at Fatty’s back, her tone sharp and commanding: “What now? What’s going on again?”
Fatty turned, a mocking expression on his face. His gaze was dismissive—more like he was looking at a stranger than at his woman.
“Get up and take a look. You’ll see for yourself.”
With that, he pulled up his pants, stepped out, and began helping people board the evacuation buses.
Although the evacuation was mostly orderly, the noise and movement outside made it chaotic.
Xu Li’er sat there fuming, suspecting that Fatty planned to “put his pants back on and pretend nothing happened.”
Impossible. She refused to let that happen.
She hurriedly dressed and followed him out. She had given herself to him—how could she let him shirk responsibility so easily?
Outside, the buses were still in the complex. The disabled and mentally impaired, unable to care for themselves, were loaded into the first bus; pregnant women and children took the second; the elderly and widowed filled the third.
Fatty’s extended family—the second, third, fourth, and fifth-born brothers—had rallied a group and driven several cars to lead the way.
They had their own escape route. They didn’t coordinate with Zhan Lian’s team and didn’t expect Zhan Lian’s protection. They drove straight out the back gate.
It wasn’t much of a burden—just a group of vulnerable people trying to get away.
An Ran, watching their trucks creep forward, flicked her fingers to move the vines blocking the road, smoothing the way for them.
In the apocalypse, some things didn’t need to be said aloud. If you understand, I’ll help. If you don’t, I won’t bother.
Fatty and An Ran both understood this.
Zhan Lian’s team waited until Fatty’s group had left before they moved out. The danger was coming from the south, but An Ran couldn’t gauge its full scale.
They stayed behind to cover the retreat—this was righteousness.
An Ran’s ability allowed her to “see” nearly the entire Star District, but farther south was beyond her range. Still, she knew there would be no shortage of small dinosaurs heading north.
The mutant flowers and vines of Xiangcheng—good and bad alike—became a living barrier.
Though the little dinosaurs’ hides were tough, making them hard to pierce, their gaping maws gave the vines an opening. Once tangled, tiny green buds would sprout and stab into their mouths, devouring their organs. Some dinosaurs were too tough, though—if a bud crawled in, they simply bit it off and swallowed it.
