Chapter 318: Born with
To be honest, Zhan Lian's personality now is much better than before the apocalypse. Before the apocalypse, if she said something he didn’t like to hear, he would explode on the spot. He certainly wouldn’t have left so meekly and quietly.
An Ran sits at the table, slurping the noodles. She thinks of Little Mint next door and sighs again. She quickly finishes her noodles, goes next door, and calls Little Mint, who is standing dumbfounded beside Doll's bed. She asks Little Mint to eat some noodles first.
Little Mint, as usual, accepts whatever is arranged for her without question. She sits down and eats when An Ran asks her to, almost as if she has become numb to everything around her, with no emotions of her own.
Zhan Lian leans against the guardrail of Gaoping, where the sun is a little scorching. Feeling a little annoyed, he habitually reaches into his trouser pocket to take out a cigarette. But after taking it out and thinking for a moment, he throws it directly over the guardrail.
Then, he watches An Ran call Little Mint into another room, leaving Zhan Anxin alone next door.
Alone!
Zhan Lian’s mind suddenly becomes active. He glances over at An Ran and Little Mint’s room, stretches out his long legs, and quickly walks to Zhan Anxin’s door. He gently pushes the door open and walks in with excitement. He slowly reaches out his hand to Zhan Anxin, who is lying in the white crib.
"You…"
He hesitates and lowers his head, watching Zhan Anxin, who has been sleeping soundly, slowly open her sleepy eyes. She yawns, and a thin blanket is draped over her round belly. Her chubby little hands wave and grab at the blanket.
Her mother really takes good care of her. Despite the hot weather, Doll’s ability to regulate her body temperature isn’t very good. Fearing she might catch a cold, Zhan Anxin has been dressed in a cotton monk’s robe, with a diaper on her bottom and a pair of breathable socks on her feet.
There are two red woolen cherries on the socks. As Zhan Anxin raises her feet and kicks, the little cherries sway back and forth, which is extremely cute.
Zhan Anxin is clean and tidy, making her especially comforting and adorable to look at.
However, seeing Zhan Anxin humming, raising her hands, and kicking her legs, Zhan Lian feels as if he is facing a formidable enemy. He lies down beside the crib and asks seriously, "Why did you wake up?"
This is bad. What should he do now that she is awake?
The child, just over three months old, has the flesh on her hands piled up into several wrinkles. Her skin is white and thinner than paper. She clenches her little fists and waves them back and forth, one of her tiny fists caught in the thin blanket over her belly. Her round eyes look at the sunglasses that Zhan Lian has hung on his lapel, reflecting the round face of the little baby, and Doll giggles.
"What's so funny?" Zhan Lian moves his face closer to the crib, making his face behind the sunglasses appear larger. Doll laughs even harder, and her little body in the crib nearly bounces with laughter.
"Is it funny? Does Dad look like a comedian?" Zhan Lian moves his face a little further away, and Doll, who had just stopped laughing, starts laughing again.
Zhan Lian then finds a pattern, moving his face back and forth to tease Doll, feeling quite pleased with himself.
He feels that this must be the natural blood relationship between them as father and daughter, which creates no barriers between him and his daughter. His daughter smiles as soon as she sees him, which proves she must understand that he is her father!
See, the relationship between father and daughter doesn’t need to be cultivated—it’s innate!
