Chapter 283: I Just Want to Save Myself
Chapter 283: I Just Want to Save Myself
Even though this man is her ex-husband, the apocalypse has made people unpredictable. Without the test of time and crisis, Anran doesn’t dare to follow him recklessly.
This has nothing to do with whether she secretly believes she can take on Zhan Lian or not.
Zhan Lian, who has just relaxed his furrowed brows, tenses up again at Anran’s guarded and overly polite attitude. He wants to get angry, but then he reminds himself—it’s the end of the world, and Anran has been through a lot. It’s good to be cautious.
Taking a deep breath, he suppresses his frustration and says, “I’m taking you to a safe place. There are too many people here, too many eyes watching. You have a child with you—you can’t stay here.”
Seeing that Anran remains unmoved, Zhan Lian adds, “We’re going to Tiesi Village. Your Brother Tao is already there.”
At the mention of “your Brother Tao,” Anran’s frown deepens. She looks at Zhan Lian and asks, “What’s with your tone? Do we have some kind of grudge I don’t know about? Why are you acting like this?”
Throughout the whole situation, Anran has been confused.
First, Zhan Lian isn’t even supposed to know about the child. Second, they have been divorced for a year already. She has no idea how ex-couples interact in the apocalypse, but before the world fell apart, most divorced couples just became strangers, never crossing paths again.
So when that woman in military uniform jumped out and accused Anran of being cold-hearted and biased toward Yun Tao, she had been utterly confused. When Zhan Lian suddenly reappeared, emotionally charged and meddling in her affairs, she had been even more confused. And now, with him acting all jealous and resentful, she is at a complete loss.
On top of that, thanks to that woman in military uniform, Anran’s impression of Tiesi Village couldn’t be worse. She sees herself as nothing more than a passerby there. Zhan Lian is the hero of Tiesi Village—he can continue being their hero. He doesn’t need to concern himself with her. She is just stopping by and will leave soon!
Zhan Lian feels like he is about to explode again, but he suddenly lets out a deep breath, realizing that if he keeps communicating with Anran like this, he might actually have a heart attack. He storms out the door—only to storm right back in.
He stares at Anran with such intensity that she thinks he is about to lose his temper. But instead, his voice is filled with helplessness as he says, “Fine. Since we were husband and wife, I have no grudge against you. But is that all there is between us? No grudges, and nothing else? There are things I never explained to you, and things you never explained to me. Let’s find a quiet place and clear the air. Come with me—I won’t hurt you. But if you stay here, there are plenty of people who will.”
He says, “we were husband and wife,” not “used to be.”
“What exactly do you want?” Anran’s brows never relax. The weight of his words makes her heart tighten as she asks, “Who wants to hurt me? People from Tiesi Village? Then go ahead and be their hero. Save your world. We’re just passing through—we’ll be gone soon!”
If the threat is in Tiesi Village, then she can’t stay here any longer. She has to reunite with Yun Tao and Hengheng and leave this damned place immediately!
“Who said I want to save the world?” Zhan Lian stands there, struggling to suppress the emotions surging in his heart. For a moment, sadness flashes in his eyes.
How have things between him and Anran become so distant?
She wants to leave—but she has no intention of taking him with her.
Taking a deep breath, he calms himself once more, his tone softening. “I don’t want to save the world anymore. I just want to save myself. Is that okay?”
