Chapter 20: She Is a Mother Now
Chapter 20: She Is a Mother Now
Anran takes the fruit knife from Hu Zhen, removes the soiled bed sheet from her bed, folds it, and uses the knife to tear it apart. She then grabs the torn sheet and, with a strong pull, splits it into two halves with a “ripping” sound.
Under normal circumstances, Anran wouldn’t be able to do something so strenuous, especially since she has just given birth 15 hours ago. But now, she doesn’t care about that. She no longer sees herself as just a new mother; she is a mother determined to act!
The torn bed sheet, when connected, is about two to three meters long, but it isn’t enough. Anran then starts working on the duvet cover, but it still isn’t sufficient. Hu Zhen, lying on her bed, hurriedly throws off her own duvet and hands it to Anran.
“Take this duvet cover too; is it enough?”
“It should be enough.”
Anran frowns and starts sweating all over again. She isn’t sure if the combined sheets and duvet cover will be long enough. She has never done anything like climbing walls before and isn’t skilled at measuring the height of the building with bed linens. A difference of one or two meters could mean a dangerous jump.
After tying all the torn sheets and duvet covers together to make a rope, Anran prepares to tie one end to the metal frame at the foot of Chen Jiao’s bed. Since Chen Jiao’s bed is closest to the window and is heavy, it seems like the most suitable place to secure the rope.
Before Anran can make a secure knot, Chen Jiao, lying on the bed, suddenly sits up and shouts at Anran, “Can’t you let me have some peace and quiet?”
Chen Jiao is irritated by Anran’s constant movement—tearing fabric and fussing around her bed. With the terrifying situation outside, this 16-bed ward is still not quiet, which is incredibly annoying.
Anran glances at her, ignores her complaints, and continues to tie the rope to the end of Chen Jiao’s bed. She then tosses the other end out the window. She clings to the window, observing the rain cover outside, and wonders if she can successfully jump from the fourth-floor rain cover to the one on the third floor using the rope.
Obviously, Anran’s attitude of treating Chen Jiao as nothing completely angers Chen Jiao. She kneels on the bed and desperately begins to untie the rope that Anran has tied to the end of her bed, shouting angrily:
“What’s the point of doing all this? Is all this fuss going to help us get out? Our only option now is to wait, wait for rescue!”
"What’s the point?! At least I’m trying to find a way!!!"
Seeing Chen Jiao actually trying to untie the ropes, Anran is so angry that she shoves Chen Jiao, knocking her off the bed and onto the floor. Chen Jiao falls and cries out in pain, looking like she has been hurt badly. Anran is somewhat startled; it is the first time in her 23 years that she has physically attacked someone. She had slapped Chen Jiao earlier and now has violently pushed her off the bed.
The slap didn’t hurt Chen Jiao, but pushing her off the bed is more serious. Seeing Chen Jiao lying on the floor groaning, Anran’s first thought is that she is finished—she didn’t control her temper. Will Chen Jiao blackmail her?
Then she considers the current situation outside, how chaotic it is, and with no surveillance in the ward, even if Chen Jiao accuses her, there isn’t much she can do about it. She needs to get out and find help; saving the child is the priority!
