Chapter 181: Human Nature
Chapter 181: Human Nature
Anran and her friends rush toward the exhibition hall on the first floor. However, before they can reach the car showroom, a group of zombies is already crowding around the glass door, trying to force their way in.
As Anran and her friends sprint past Gate 1, the zombies demonstrate the sheer power of the masses. With a force that shatters the bulletproof glass, they surge in like a tidal wave.
The glass door is thick, designed to withstand bullets, yet it is brought down by the sheer weight of the zombies—an indication of just how many of them there are.
Anran pauses, turning in place while holding the crying baby. Zombies are coming from behind and the left. She glances forward and sees Liu Yuan, who has already carried Yun Tao on her back. In a panic, she opens a car in the showroom, shoves Heng Heng and the unconscious Yun Tao inside, and now sits in the driver’s seat.
Just as Liu Yuan is about to close the car door, she glances back at Anran, her lips moving as if she wants to tell Anran to get in the car. But she hesitates, knowing that making any noise might draw the zombies' attention away from Anran and the baby.
A look of guilt flashes across Liu Yuan's face. Anran immediately understands. Liu Yuan doesn't want her to get in the car—not because she doesn't care for Anran, but because the baby is crying, and no one wants to be around someone with such a risk. It is human nature.
Anran manages a pale smile. While running with the crying baby, she pushes the little girl who has been following her toward Liu Yuan. With a heart-wrenching shout, she calls out,
"Let her get in the car!"
Anran watches as Liu Yuan closes the car door and makes a run for another car in the showroom. However, her luck isn’t always on her side. The door she reaches for is locked.
Looking around, Anran sees only four or five cars in the showroom, all from the same brand. This one is the closest to her. If she tries the other cars, the zombies will likely flood into the showroom. If she can’t get the doors open in time, both she and the baby will be trapped.
She grits her teeth, curses her fate. She has no choice but to abandon the other cars. She turns and runs toward the showroom exit, backtracking into the mall.
"Don't cry, don't cry, baby, don’t cry, mommy’s here, mommy’s with you," she whispers as she runs, her voice thick with anxiety.
She lifts her clothes, pulls open her nursing bra, and tries to feed the baby in the sling. But the baby refuses to cooperate, crying instead of nursing, unwilling to suck in the shaky feeding position.
The little girl, who has been pushed by Anran, doesn’t go toward Liu Yuan as instructed. Instead, she grabs the bed sheet wrapped around her body and follows Anran directly. Anran glances at her, then yells,
"Why are you following me? Are you trying to get killed?"
The little girl doesn’t respond, her expression wooden. She simply follows wherever Anran goes.
She doesn’t seem to understand the danger around them, or perhaps, she just doesn’t care. In this hellish world, all she wants is to be with Anran.
