Chapter 119: Then Kill Him
Chapter 119: Then Kill Him
Anran can’t just leave with a child. If she wants to venture into the apocalypse, she needs a bulletproof car. She thinks that if she ever finds herself surrounded by zombies, she can hide in the car and wait for them to disperse.
It’s time to take back her ex-husband’s bulletproof car.
Of course, Anran also has a spare key, but Yun Tao’s car key is special—it has a small crystal pendant attached to it. Inside the crystal is a photo of Anran and her ex-husband from when they first met. These are personal mementos, and Anran doesn’t want them falling into the hands of some filthy man.
She doesn’t actually have many photos of Zhan Lian, just their wedding photos and a few other large pictures. All of them might get lost as she wanders in the future. If she can retrieve this pendant, when Doll grows up and asks about her father, Anran can show her the pendant and tell her that the man inside it is her father.
Hearing this, Liu Yuan, who is pouring mineral water for Hengheng, looks up from the table covered with stolen food. "This is too risky. What if Ren Xian catches us?"
"Then kill him!" Anran raises her eyebrows, her anger unmistakable. Perhaps it’s because over the past few days, every time she and Liu Yuan go to the security room to steal food, they see Ren Xian either tormenting Xiaomei or beating and scolding her. It makes Anran feel that a man like Ren Xian doesn’t deserve to live.
And Xiaomei, for her part, does nothing to resist or call out. She seems to be purposefully torturing herself. It feels as though she is deliberately accepting the abuse.
Anran’s sense of morality has shifted. Her actions are far removed from legal norms, and so, without hesitation, she says that Ren Xian deserves to die.
"Kill him, that’s fine!" Liu Yuan is stunned but, surprisingly, agrees with Anran. She and Anran are already entangled in this mess—one more crime won’t make a difference. Besides, if Ren Xian isn’t killed today, will he let them go tomorrow?
The two of them are mentally prepared. With the weather clearing outside, it’s almost ten in the morning. After feeding Doll, Anran looks down at her daughter, who stares back at her with wide, dark eyes, studying her face for a while before falling asleep, exhausted. Liu Yuan reminds Hengheng to take good care of his sister and not to open the door for anyone. Then, she grabs the kitchen knife and follows Anran out.
Hengheng, about to turn six, is a sensible boy. He always takes good care of Doll. When Liu Yuan asks him to watch over her, he moves a small stool and sits next to the crib, flipping through a picture book while keeping an eye on her.
Anran and Liu Yuan sneak their way to the security room, weapons tucked into their pockets. Seeing Yun Tao leading the five survivors toward Phase II, Anran, crouched in the bushes, points to the security room. Liu Yuan nods, lying on the ground and crawling toward the room. Anran follows close behind.
The security room is packed with supplies, with barely any space to move. To the left is the monitoring room, and to the right is the lounge. From the lounge, the sound of Ren Xian’s painful groans drifts out. Every morning, after Yun Tao takes his group to scavenge for supplies, Ren Xian begins his usual routine of tormenting Xiaomei.
