Winter Preparations (2)
The dawn that settled over Redwood Winery after the victory party had roared through was oppressively quiet. The sweet reek of spilled champagne and the smoky perfume of barbecue had been rinsed away by the morning dew, and in their place the cool, faintly funky earth-smell peculiar to Napa Valley had settled once more.
I had not drunk much the night before, so I stood among the vines with a clear head free of hangover. Some thirty laborers and foremen who had gathered since first light watched me with shoulders hunched against the chill. Dad was among them. Behind them, in the lingering dark, Warren Winiarski leaned on his cane and observed this peculiar dawn assembly with open interest.
“All right, everyone—listen up.”
The murmuring stopped. I pointed to the crates at my feet. Instead of shears or saws they held dozens of vernier calipers and small flags in red, blue, and yellow.
“From today, winter work at Redwood will be done completely differently. Before we touch a single cane, we will quantify the condition of every vine.”
The words were barely out when Martinez—a veteran foreman who had pruned Napa vines for more than a decade—raised his hand.
“Mr. Brian, pruning is something you read by eye. Thick cane, leave a little more; thin cane, cut harder. Why do we need measuring tools?”
From the shadows Warren stepped slowly forward. He lifted one of the calipers from the crate, turned it in his fingers, and regarded me with a curious half-smile.
“I’m curious myself, Master. What exactly are you trying to teach these skilled hands? Do you mean to turn grapevines into precision machines?”
I gave him a brief nod of acknowledgment, then unrolled a chart for the crew.
“Foreman Martinez isn’t wrong. Feel is everything in farming. But feel varies from man to man. What I want is canopy occupancy of ninety-five percent or better, uniform across every block. Look at the manual.”
I began walking them through the pruning algorithm they would all follow.
“Starting today we measure every cane. Anything over twelve millimeters keeps two buds. Ten to twelve millimeters keeps one. Below that we remove the base entirely. ‘Remove the base’ means cutting flush at the very point where the cane leaves the trunk or spur—so learn the term. We do this to hit the numbers in the T-R Ratio model I calculated—the ratio of top to root. We are synchronizing the number of buds aboveground with the carbohydrate reserves the roots have already banked.”
Warren narrowed his eyes and came closer.
“T-R Ratio… I’ve heard the theory. You’re saying you’ll apply it vine by vine across the whole property? Measuring thousands of plants one at a time?”
“Yes, sir. Only then will next spring’s shoots break with equal force everywhere. No more of some vines racing while others languish. From now on every vineyard at Redwood runs on absolute standards.”
“I see that much… Heh.”
Warren laughed hollowly, almost disbelieving. The labor cost would at least double or triple; he knew it, and the look on my face said such details were not even under discussion. That left him half-amused, half-stunned.
I understood the reaction. Still, with real surplus cash finally in the farm’s accounts, quality had to climb higher. Unlike Silver Oak, which had rebuilt even its subsoil, Redwood’s drainage at depth was still the original profile. I needed every technique I had brought back from the future.
A low, stable T-R Ratio lets sugars climb cleanly while pH stays in check, acidity holds, and skins thicken. Color and tannin deepen; the vines shrug off water stress. All of it collapses vintage variation and locks the winery’s quality at a high, steady plane. That was why the ratio had to be enforced.
Once the crew began, half-convinced, to pick up calipers, I moved to the second phase: the colored flags.
“While you prune, you also diagnose individual vigor. Dull autumn leaf color gets a red flag. Excessively vigorous vines with incomplete lignification get blue. All winter we will not broadcast compost across whole blocks. We will run variable-rate application—different prescriptions for every vine according to its flag.”
“You’re going to feed each tree a different meal?”
Warren’s voice rose with genuine surprise. In 2007 Napa, precision agriculture was barely a rumor. Standard practice was still so many bags per acre and walk away.
“Exactly. Weak vines get high-concentration organics. Strong ones get micronutrients that throttle nitrogen metabolism. By next harvest, sugar and acid variation will sit inside one percent. That is how we protect the quality of Astra Vale.”
Warren nodded again and again, fully absorbed. Awe and fierce curiosity lived side by side in his eyes.
“Watching you makes me ashamed of how primitive my own farming has been all these years. But Brian—why did you order those micro-sprinklers checked? Common sense says water in winter freezes a vine to death.”
Dad and every laborer leaned in. I answered while verifying the controller set-points.
“They activate automatically the moment temperature hits minus zero-point-five Celsius. The water does not freeze the vines; it protects them. Latent heat.”
“Latent heat?”
“When water turns to ice it releases roughly eighty calories per gram. A fine mist coats the surface in a thin film. As that film freezes it gives off heat that keeps the tissue inside from falling below zero. Even at minus five outside, the vine core stays at zero.”
No conventional vineyard had ever heard of such a method. Warren’s mouth stayed open. It was the micro-sprinkler frost-protection system I had run for years on smart farms before the regression. Calculate dew point accurately, trigger at the exact moment, and the ice shell becomes a better shield than any wrap or heater.
“Raising temperature by spraying water… Is that truly possible?”
“You’ll see it work.”
My certainty left him nodding blankly.
“Remarkable. With this level of precision, William Harlan’s investigators could dig for a hundred days and never uncover Redwood’s secrets.”
Work orders finished, the crews fanned out. The broad Redwood estate began to move like one vast laboratory. Calipers touched thousands of canes; flags of every color rose like a strange new crop. The sight was magnificent.
I brought Dad and Warren into the office. A geological map of Napa Valley lay spread across the desk.
“Sir, the system is built. Now we need the next puzzle piece.”
“The next piece already? We only just took home the trophy.”
The question sounded skeptical, yet the way he stood with arms folded said he expected nothing less—and was quietly proud of it.
“We can’t rest on Astra Vale. The win was bold, but a lasting throne needs overwhelming class. A big part of this success came from the Merlot we lucked into at auction—yet that was a miracle vintage born of an anomalous terroir.”
“Hmm. True enough.”
“To hold a still higher level, we need top-flight Merlot that can wrap the Cabernet Sauvignon in silk. Soft, complete, sensual.”
Warren’s face grew serious.
“Merlot… Most of Napa treats it as mere support for Cabernet, but the true finish of a blend is decided by Merlot’s texture. What are you hunting?”
“High clay, perfect drainage, and a constant cool breeze that can take the edge off even the hottest afternoon. To beat the sheer weight of Harlan’s To Kalon we have to pull a more delicate, more voluptuous velvet from Merlot than they ever will.”
I tapped a spot on the map—zones burned into my memory of 2025, still undervalued by the market, destined to become Merlot’s holy ground.
“Lower Coombsville, or the western slopes of Oakville… Somewhere in these blocks the jewel is waiting. I want to know who holds title to every acre.”
Until now we had simply bought whatever decent parcels appeared at fair prices. The game had changed. The cash that would soon pour from Astra Vale let us hunt aggressively—buy the farms we wanted or pay a premium to lock the variety first.
Warren stroked his chin and nodded.
“That intelligence lives with Robert Mondavi. We see him this weekend. The man knows every handful of Napa soil and whose fingers close around it. He may even own a piece of the land we’re after.”
“Then the meeting with Mondavi becomes even more critical.”
“It does. He asked for a private talk with you alone. I’m dying to know what will be said.”
His expression made plain how badly he wanted to sit in that room. He was not, however, a man who would beg like a child.
“I’ll report every word when I get back.”
“Not one sentence missing.”
“Hahaha! Understood.”
I stood at once.
“Dad, I’m heading to Golden Grain House. Need to check the Ruby Quartz launch.”
First day of release. Photos with Warren against the distillery backdrop—Warren, me, and Jacob—were required for the distribution materials, so the schedule had been locked.
“Go on, then.”
“Keep a tight eye on the pruning crews. They’ll start eyeballing numbers the second we leave. Be thorough.”
“Don’t worry. I know exactly how they slack the moment you loosen the reins. Even if I have to pay a little more, I’ll ride them hard. Trust me.”
With Dad’s solid answer at our backs, Warren and I climbed into the sedan.
“How does it feel?”
Warren, about to release a brandy for the first time instead of wine, answered with an unreadable expression.
“Happy and overwhelmed at once. A few years ago I believed I had finished everything I was meant to do… Meeting the Master proved me wrong. This brandy itself began with outside inspiration. Without what I found at your friend Jacob’s distillery it would never have been born. That makes me greedier still.”
“Really?”
“Funny, is it? An old man admitting new greed?”
“Haha… a little.”
“Rascal. Still, it surprises even me. I never knew that fire was still banked inside. So when you see Robert, let him taste Ruby Quartz, then tell me every flicker of his face and every word he says—in fine detail.”
Warren smiled, a little bitter. The real regret, I saw, was that he would not be there to watch Robert Mondavi’s expression the instant the brandy touched his tongue.
