The Gaze That Lingers
Eunju grew quieter even before they reached the meeting place on the day of the male members' lens photography session. The knit top she'd worn on their trip was draped carefully over her shoulders, and her dark long skirt parted with a very brief slit along the side each time she took a step. When she stood still, she looked perfectly modest. But the moment she moved, Eunju could tell the outfit wasn't one that fully concealed her. Before getting out of the car, Minjun glanced at her once.
"Are you okay?"
Eunju didn't answer right away. Instead, she pressed the slit of her skirt with her fingertips.
"I don't know."
"If it's uncomfortable, we'll stop immediately."
"Okay."
Eunju gave a small nod. Then she added, very softly, "But... today, I don't exactly want to run away."
The shooting location was the garden of a small café on the outskirts. There was a wooden deck, a low fence, sunlit glass windows, and an old brick wall. At first, everything was truly quiet. An older member smiled and said, "Sister-in-law, you look wonderful today," while the younger ones pulled out their cameras, commenting, "The color of your outfit will photograph beautifully, sister-in-law." Eunju knew all those words were about photography. At the same time, she knew they weren't only about photography. Their eyes didn't stop at her face. They calmly took in the line of her shoulders, her collarbones, the direction of her legs hidden beneath the skirt, and even the side slit that opened with every step.
Yet none of them were rude. That made it harder for Eunju to pull away. If they were rude, she could get angry and turn her back. But they kept smiling as they spoke.
"Looks good."
"The lines are coming out beautifully."
"The light is really clinging to you today, sister-in-law."
"Your natural expression is the best, sister-in-law."
The compliments gradually loosened something inside Eunju. The first poses were simple. Standing in front of the brick wall and looking toward Minjun. Walking slowly across the deck. Lightly holding the edge of her skirt with one hand. At first, Eunju kept pulling her shoulders up. If the knit top slipped down even a little, her hand went there first. Every time the skirt's slit opened, tension ran through her knees. Each time, the older member would speak gently.
"Sister-in-law, it's fine. If you try too hard to cover yourself, the tension shows in the photos."
"Just relax your shoulders naturally. That looks far more elegant."
At the word elegant, Eunju's hands stopped. Instead of talking about exposure, they called it elegant. That word strangely became her excuse. Minjun watched from a short distance away. Each time Eunju changed poses, she looked for him. Minjun simply nodded without a word. With each silent permission, Eunju found she could hold on a little longer.
As the shoot continued, the atmosphere slowly rose. The shutter sounds that had been sparse at first grew more frequent, and the members' comments increased.
"Good, that expression right now is perfect."
"Sister-in-law, that smile you just gave was so natural."
"Your side profile is really great. It makes your neckline look so long."
"The way your skirt moves is beautiful. Could you walk a little more?"
Eunju felt those words pushing her forward. But it wasn't only a feeling of being pushed. Something inside her was leaning toward those words as well. Pretty. Good. It comes out well. You have such atmosphere. Those words flew in from beyond the lenses and settled lightly on her skin. Eunju gradually stopped avoiding the cameras. At first she only looked at Minjun, but at some point she began directing her gaze toward the lenses. She couldn't hold it for long, but she no longer avoided it. That small change alone altered the men's reactions.
"Ah, that's good."
"That look in your eyes just now was excellent."
"Just like that, one more time."
Eunju's face grew hot. She thought she understood what they wanted. And yet, knowing that, she found herself creating that look for them again. One of the younger members spoke carefully.
"Sister-in-law, the line of your skirt looks so good. Would it be all right to try a seated shot?"
Eunju looked at Minjun. He didn't answer immediately. He first studied her face.
"It's fine," Eunju said first. Her voice was small but clear. She sat down on the low bench. The moment she did, her skirt rode up slightly over her thighs. The slit opened, revealing the line of one leg longer than before. Eunju reflexively moved to lower her hand.
"Sister-in-law, could you rest your hands comfortably on your knees for a moment?" the older member said. "The skirt is fine. The line looks very natural right now."
Natural. Eunju felt the gaze hidden behind that word. They were looking at the line of her legs. They were looking at the gap her skirt had opened. But instead of calling it lewd, they called it natural. Eunju withdrew her hand. Air touched her thighs. The thin lining inside the skirt brushed her skin. The fact that this brief exposure was now placed before several lenses made Eunju's breath catch for a beat.
The shutter sounds continued. Click. Click. Click.
Eunju felt embarrassed. Strangely, though, that embarrassment made her sit even straighter.
"This time, could you hold the edge of your skirt just a little?" a younger member said. "As if the wind is blowing it. Don't lift it too much—just enough to show the line."
Don't lift it too much. That sounded even more explicit. Eunju caught the hem of her skirt with her fingertips. At first she lifted it only a tiny bit. The leg line visible through the slit extended to mid-thigh. The lenses quietly lowered. No one said anything strange. But Eunju could tell from the way their postures changed. She knew exactly what she was showing them now.
"Good."
"Just like that."
"Sister-in-law, look toward Minjun."
Eunju looked at Minjun. His face was tense. He didn't look angry. Rather, it was the face of someone seeing too many things at once. Eunju gripped the edge of her skirt a little tighter. Minjun was watching. The men were photographing. She knew it. That fact burned hot through the center of her body.
The shoot didn't end there. When they moved to a low table on one side of the garden, the older member said, "Let's bring out a bit more of the upper body this time. Sister-in-law, could you lean your arm lightly on the table?"
Eunju didn't immediately understand his meaning. She thought it would be a simple pose. But the moment she leaned her body forward slightly, the neckline of her knit top fell softly downward. The area below her collarbones was revealed more deeply. A shadow formed along the upper curve of her breasts. Eunju tried to straighten up immediately.
"It's fine," the younger member said quickly. "It's really good. The light is coming in right here."
"Sister-in-law, just turn your head slightly to the side. Yes, like that."
The light is coming in. Even after hearing those words, Eunju couldn't move. The light they spoke of was resting on her exposed skin. The shadow they wanted to capture was the curve created beneath her knit top. Minjun took a step forward. Eunju looked at him. He stopped. His eyes asked: Should we stop? Eunju swallowed. Then she gave the tiniest shake of her head. Not yet. It was all right to keep going. When Minjun saw that small signal, his gaze trembled.
"Good," the older member's voice lowered. "Sister-in-law, the atmosphere right now is truly excellent."
Eunju felt herself melting at those words. Atmosphere. Elegance. Lines. Light. All those words were polite. Yet they were slowly lifting the edges of her clothing, lowering her shoulders little by little, and tilting her body forward. She knew. This wasn't simply about being photographed beautifully. It was about confirming for herself how far she could endure, how much she could show, in front of these men's lenses.
Eunju looked at Minjun. He was still there. He hadn't run away, nor was he pushing her. He was simply watching everything. That gaze held her in place. Eunju relaxed her arm on the table a little more. The neckline fell even more softly. The edge of her knit top trembled slightly. In that instant, the shutter sounds overlapped all at once. Click. Click. Click.
Eunju didn't close her eyes. She didn't avoid them. Instead, she exhaled slowly. As her breath left her, her upper body lowered just a fraction, and the lenses didn't miss that change. In that moment, Eunju realized something. She wasn't trembling only from shame. She was being seen. She knew it, and she wasn't stopping. And Minjun was watching every single scene. That shook her even more deeply.
When the photography session ended, Eunju felt the strength leave her legs, which had stood longer than she'd expected. She hadn't done anything particularly strenuous, yet her whole body felt heavy as if soaked through. She hadn't realized that holding a pose with her shoulders exposed, walking while conscious of her skirt's hem, and adjusting her expression every time a lens turned toward her could exhaust a person so thoroughly.
The moment she got into the car, Eunju sank back against the seat. Minjun didn't start the engine right away. He looked at her for a moment.
"It was tiring, wasn't it."
Eunju nodded. "Yeah. A lot." Her answer was honest. But there was no hint of dislike in it. Minjun didn't ask anything more. She was grateful for that silence. If they tried to put today's events into words right now, the face she'd managed to hold together might crumble. Eunju turned her gaze out the window and pressed the slit of her skirt with her fingertips. The sensation of it opening and closing still lingered.
All the way home, Eunju spoke very little. Minjun pretended to focus on driving. But both of them knew. The scenes from today were still riding in the car with them. The shutter sounds. The breeze that had touched her shoulders. The men's low voices saying "Good" one after another. And the way her own posture had gradually loosened each time. Eunju was tired. Yet strangely, her insides refused to settle. Instead, a small sense of pride remained deep within her. The pride of not having run away. The feeling that she had drawn a line she could handle and held firm within it until the end. And above all, the confirmation that she hadn't looked completely pathetic in front of all those lenses.
That night, after washing up, Eunju stood in front of the mirror for a moment. Faint marks from her clothing remained on her shoulders, and the sensation of the skirt lining brushing her thighs seemed to linger. The neckline, shoulder line, and leg line that opened with every step—the photographers had praised them all. When those words rose in her mind again, her face grew hot.
When Minjun came out of the bathroom, Eunju was already lying in bed. With her back to him, she said, "I was a little strange today, wasn't I."
Minjun paused for a moment. "No."
"It felt like I got too caught up in the atmosphere."
"That can happen."
Minjun's answer was low. "Everyone wanted to photograph you beautifully, and you wanted to look beautiful too, right?"
Eunju didn't answer. Because his words were too accurate. She had wanted to look beautiful. That alone was embarrassing enough. But she couldn't deny it.
Starting the next afternoon, the photos began arriving one by one. The first ones came from the older member. "Sister-in-law, if these photos are all right with you, may I upload them?" Below the message were three attached images. Eunju opened her phone and froze.
The first photo showed her standing in front of the brick wall. Her shoulders were softly revealed, and the edge of her knit top created a precarious line just below her collarbones. Her face looked calmer than she'd expected—so much so that it was hard to believe she'd been trembling like that.
The second photo was the seated shot on the bench. The skirt had fallen modestly, yet the line of her thigh visible through the slit was clear. That moment had been truly brief. Eunju had only lowered her hand for a second. But the photo had captured that instant precisely.
In the third photo, Eunju's breath stopped. It was the moment she'd leaned forward slightly with her arm on the table. The neckline of her knit top had fallen, creating a soft shadow across the upper part of her breasts. It wasn't an explicit photo. But anyone looking at it would know exactly where their eyes were drawn.
Eunju held out her phone to Minjun. "Look at this."
The moment Minjun saw the photos, he fell silent. He slowly scrolled through all three, then returned to the second one.
"They caught it well," Eunju said quietly.
Minjun couldn't respond.
"That really was just for a second," Eunju said as she looked at the photo where her skirt slit had been captured. "It was right between lowering my hand and stopping."
She moved to the next photo. "This one too. I only leaned forward for a moment."
The photos held those fleeting instants. The hand that had unconsciously moved to cover her shoulder and then stopped. The fingertips holding the hem of her skirt. The slit that opened as she took a step. The shadow across her upper body when she lowered herself over the table. The photographers had smiled and called it natural. But their lenses hadn't missed a single one of those natural-looking gaps.
Eunju felt a chill at that realization. It wasn't purely unpleasant. There was something close to admiration mixed in. The men had truly been watching. They spoke of light, composition, and atmosphere, but deep down they were instinctively waiting for the moment a woman's body opened up.
"So this is what males are like..." Eunju muttered as if to herself.
Minjun looked at her. Still not taking her eyes from the screen, she said, "It's scary." After a brief pause, she added very softly, "But it's amazing."
Minjun's fingertips tightened. Eunju's words didn't sound like criticism. Rather, it was the voice of someone confirming that her body had drawn out their instincts. That shook Minjun even harder.
Soon photos arrived from the other members as well. The younger member had applied slightly brighter editing. Her skin looked clearer than in reality, and a thin layer of sunlight clung to her shoulders and neckline. Another member sent a shot of her walking. In the moment her skirt moved and one leg line opened, Eunju had been looking toward Minjun. That gaze made the photo even more intriguing. A woman standing before men's lenses, yet searching for Minjun at the end.
"May I upload these?"
"Sister-in-law, this cut is just too good."
"I'll remove anything that might make you uncomfortable."
All the messages were polite. That made them even harder to refuse. As Eunju opened each photo, she felt as if she were being undressed again and again. The exposures at the scene had been momentary. But the photos froze those moments in time. They made them expandable, viewable again and again, and placed them before her as images awaiting her permission.
Eunju thought about it for a long time. Then she replied to several of them.
"This one is fine."
"This one feels a bit embarrassing, so please leave it out."
"Please send this photo only to me."
After sending them, her face grew hot. Please send this photo only to me. Those words weren't a rejection. They were closer to saying she liked it. It meant the image was embarrassing to show others, but she didn't want it deleted. Minjun saw those replies from beside her. He said nothing. Eunju felt his silence.
"What?" Eunju asked.
Minjun slowly shook his head. "Nothing."
"Is it strange?"
"No."
He took a breath and said, "I can see you choosing."
Eunju looked down at her phone. He was right. She was selecting the photos now. Among the images where the men's gazes had lingered most deeply, she was deciding for herself what she would allow and what she would hide. It was embarrassing. But at the same time, it felt strangely solid. She wasn't being dragged along—she was the one choosing. For the first time, Eunju was drawing the line herself with her own finger: how her body would appear, how much she would leave for others to see.
That night, the photos Eunju had permitted were uploaded to the club bulletin board. The hearts increased faster than before. The comments grew even more careful.
Eunju looked at those comments without saying a word. She simply couldn't turn off the screen. The woman in the photos was still Minjun's wife. But now that name alone could no longer fully explain her. The men's lenses had found the moments Eunju had tried to hide. Eunju had realized it. And yet she hadn't completely withdrawn.
That night, for the first time, Eunju admitted it to herself. The gaze of males was rough and persistent. But that persistence wasn't only destroying her. It was finding the lines of the woman she had folded away for so long, before anyone else could.
