The Married Woman Concept
Once the date for the married woman photoshoot was confirmed, everyone sprang into action from their own corners. On the surface it looked like nothing more than preparing for a modest shoot three days away—settling on a location, locking down the concept, planning the lighting, gathering whatever props might be needed. Yet beneath that simple checklist, far more complicated currents were moving.
Eunju found it difficult to know exactly what she should prepare. It wasn’t simply a matter of taking her clothes off. It wasn’t only about bracing herself to stand in front of the camera. She would have to show Hyeonwu and Doyun the tingling sensation that had begun in her own shame, that sweet, maddening itch inside her chest. And she would have to give Minjun the scenes he had long imagined—the sight of her slowly opening herself before the two younger men.
Above all, Eunju wanted to feel her own body tremble and burn under their gazes and expectations as she became the object of their desire. That heat could not be created by simply baring her skin. She already understood this. On that day she would have to shake the eyes of the three males fixed upon her. She needed to move them beyond seeing her as carefully pretty until they could no longer hide the urge to possess her.
The instant their eyes fled hers only to meet again. The places where fingertips lingered. The posture of lowering her head to steady her breath. Such small things would stroke a man’s primal instinct to conquer. Eunju would not be a woman who hid her shame; she would be a bold, knowing female who, even while blushing, gave off the subtle, musky scent of heat.
Hyeonwu and Doyun were busy in their own ways. In both their heads there was only Eunju.
Doyun fiddled with his camera, reopening the photos from the last chulsa, replaying again and again the moment the light shifted across her face. Hyeonwu watched silently beside him, worrying whether she might be disappointed by the concept they had chosen.
“Wouldn’t outdoors be better?” Doyun asked.
The notebook screen glowed in the workshop. Several shots of the rental studio were open alongside the photographs of Eunju from the previous outing. Hyeonwu looked at the screen and shook his head.
“Outdoors would be too much pressure.”
“No matter how determined Nuna is, starting outside on the very first try seems too hard.”
“But she looked so damn beautiful in sunlight.”
Doyun enlarged one of the previous photos with the mouse. “That feeling doesn’t come across indoors.”
In the image Eunju wore a white skirt. Sunlight lay thinly across her face and legs, and the mysterious sensuality that had flickered across her features the moment her smile faded still lingered. Hyeonwu swallowed as he stared at it.
“It is pretty, but…”
“That’s exactly the problem,” Doyun said, looking at him. “What is?”
“Outside, Nuna will be constantly distracted. She’ll be watching people walk by, worrying someone might come. She’ll stay tense the whole time.”
“Then she might not be able to focus on the photos.”
Doyun couldn’t immediately argue. Hyeonwu wasn’t wrong. Doyun was thinking about the photographs. Hyeonwu was thinking about whether Eunju could endure it. Their desires pointed in the same direction, yet the paths they imagined were slightly different.
“Then… the workshop?” Doyun asked.
Hyeonwu looked around the small, lived-in space. The worn desk. The simple bed. The crumpled blanket. The reflector leaning against the wall. Takeout bags and empty water bottles piled in the corner. It was hardly a refined setting for photography. Yet it was the place Eunju had visited many times. The place where she had washed cups, taken out lunchboxes, eaten black bean noodles, and laughed with the flush of alcohol in her cheeks. It was the space where she had already begun, little by little, to release the tension in her body.
Hyeonwu spoke carefully. “I think this would be good.”
“Nuna’s already comfortable here.”
“And it has its own retro charm, doesn’t it? The old desk, the simple bed—when they’re with Nuna they might actually create atmosphere.”
“Not like a model posing, but… more like Nuna who belongs in a space like this.”
Doyun remained silent for a long time. He looked again at Eunju on the screen. The Eunju beneath sunlight had been lovely, but he could also picture her inside this workshop. Eunju sitting on the edge of the simple bed with a jacket draped over her knees. Eunju blushing and laughing beside a bowl of black bean noodles. If outdoor shooting captured brilliant beauty beneath the sun, this place offered something different. Less glamorous, perhaps, yet it would let Eunju’s natural, atmospheric beauty shine more clearly.
“All right,” Doyun said. “We’ll use the workshop.”
Hyeonwu looked at him. “Really?”
“Yeah.” Doyun spoke without closing the notebook. “It feels right to shoot here. Nuna isn’t just a model… she’s the Nuna who’s been coming here all along.”
Hyeonwu nodded silently. Doyun chose his words for a moment, then added, “The concept’s decided too.”
“What is it?”
Doyun looked at Eunju on the screen. “Married woman.”
Hyeonwu couldn’t answer right away. It was such an ordinary word. Yet the moment it attached itself to Eunju, it became anything but ordinary. Minjun’s wife. A woman who stood before young men with her husband’s permission. A woman who wanted to be photographed by them, to remain beautiful in their eyes. And finally, a woman willing to open even the deepest parts of herself to them. All of it was contained inside that single word.
Hyeonwu eventually murmured, “You’re right. For Nuna, that would be the strongest concept.”
Doyun picked up his phone. Before dialing, his finger paused. This was the first time he would call Eunju directly. He had contacted her before she came to the workshop, and she had naturally sent messages when inviting them for a meal, but neither he nor Hyeonwu had ever called her first.
Doyun held the phone out to Hyeonwu. “You do it.”
Hyeonwu looked at him in surprise. “Why me?”
“You were the one who insisted on the workshop.”
“But you’re the one who decided the concept.”
They stared at each other for a moment. In the end Hyeonwu took the phone. Eunju’s name floated on the screen—saved simply as Eunju Nuna. Even after seeing it, he couldn’t press the call button for a long time.
Doyun urged him from the side. “Press it.”
“I know.”
Hyeonwu took a deep breath and tapped the call button. The ringtone sounded. Once. Twice. Three times. Those brief tones felt strangely long to him. He wasn’t calling the Eunju Nuna of the workshop. He was calling the married woman inside her own home, a home with a husband and a life that the two of them had no right to intrude upon. The realization tightened around his throat.
“Hello, Nuna.”
“Yes, Hyeonwu?”
“We talked about the location and concept…”
“The workshop would be good, I think. It’s a place Nuna’s already comfortable with… and it feels like it would capture you as you really are.”
“And the concept is… married woman.”
“We don’t want to photograph you as just a model. We want to capture the real you—the wife with a husband, the Nuna who comes to our workshop… That felt like the most important thing.”
“You can just come as you are. We want to capture you exactly as you are right now.”
“We’ll prepare everything. Just… come like that.”
“I’ll be waiting.”
A familiar, warm voice answered. It sounded no different from when he heard it in the workshop, yet the moment it touched his ear through the phone, a different kind of tremor ran through him. Hyeonwu lost his words for a second.
“Hyeonwu?”
“Ah, yes.” He answered hurriedly. “Nuna, we discussed the location and concept.”
“Oh? What did you decide?”
Hyeonwu glanced at Doyun, who jerked his chin as if to say, Tell her.
“For the location…” Hyeonwu spoke carefully. “We think the workshop would be best.”
The line went quiet for a moment. Hyeonwu grew nervous for no reason.
“It’s a place you’re already familiar with, and we also thought… it would come out looking the most like you, Nuna.”
Eunju didn’t answer immediately. Hyeonwu worried he had said something strange. Then her voice came.
“Okay. That sounds good.”
Only then did Hyeonwu breathe a little easier.
“And the concept…”
“Yes?”
His mouth tightened. Married woman. He had to say that word to her directly. Hyeonwu cleared his throat once.
“The concept is… married woman.”
A very brief silence flowed across the line. It struck Hyeonwu in the chest. Soon Eunju gave a small laugh.
“Married woman?”
“Yes.” He felt his face growing hot. “Not just as a model… but as someone with a husband, and… to us that felt like the most important part.”
After speaking he pressed his lips together. He had been too honest. But Eunju didn’t laugh. She didn’t dismiss him.
“What should I prepare?”
The question caught him off guard. What should she prepare? Clothes, makeup, expression, resolve—those things flashed through his mind, yet strangely he wanted to say something else.
“You can just come as you are.”
“Just like that?”
“Yes.” His voice dropped a little lower. “We want to capture the Nuna you are right now.”
The words crossed the line and reached somewhere deep inside Eunju. She couldn’t answer for a moment. Hyeonwu quickly added, “We’ll prepare everything that’s needed. But Nuna… you can just come as you are.”
Eunju laughed very softly. “All right. See you in three days, then.”
“Yes. I’ll be waiting.”
Only after he hung up did Hyeonwu realize how honestly he had spoken. But it was already too late. Eunju’s quiet reply came from the other side.
“Me too.”
The call ended. Hyeonwu couldn’t put the phone down for a long time.
Doyun asked, “What did she say?”
Hyeonwu answered with a dazed expression. “She liked it. She said she’d just come as she is.”
Doyun gave a small laugh. “Nice.”
He was already opening the notebook again, but the tips of his fingers were trembling with excitement.
After the call ended, Eunju couldn’t put her own phone down either. The concept was married woman. An ordinary word. A married woman. A woman with a husband. A woman who had given birth, kept house, and was called someone’s wife. She had heard it countless times. Yet when it left Hyeonwu’s mouth, it sounded completely different. The moment the word attached itself to her, it suddenly felt like a word of desire. A body that belonged to a husband, yet one that would stand before young men’s cameras. A body that, within the boundaries her husband permitted, wanted to remain beautiful in the eyes of men who were not her husband.
Eunju stood motionless in the middle of the living room for a long time. Fallen married woman. The phrase brushed across her mind and her face grew hot. No one had actually called her that. Hyeonwu had simply stated the concept. But Eunju herself knew. Objectively, that was what she was—a woman with a husband who nevertheless wanted to stand in front of young men. A woman who would be photographed and was perhaps already thinking about what might come after. The boys liked her, followed her, treated her with care. Minjun watched over her and gave his permission. Yet if all those gentle words were stripped away, one phrase remained.
Fallen married woman.
Eunju turned the words over in her mind again. Strangely, she didn’t dislike them. Rather, they seemed to shape her into a single clear image—an image that was shameful and dangerous, yet strangely, achingly beautiful.
That evening Eunju stood in front of the mirror for a long time. What should she prepare for the shoot? Hyeonwu had said she could just come as she was. Doyun would probably think the same. But she couldn’t really do that. Neither of them would know how much a woman agonized and adorned herself behind the scenes just to appear as if she had come casually. Even if that adornment was destined to be removed piece by piece by their hands, a woman still needed time to prepare until the very moment she was undressed.
She slowly imagined the situations that would arise on the day of the shoot. As the session progressed, one layer after another would disappear. What would be left to her then? Her hair. And even after all her clothes were gone, the deep shadow that would cover her most shameful place until the very end.
Eunju looked at her hair in the mirror. Because it was neatly straight, the woman reflected there looked far too proper. A mother, a wife, the kind of woman you could pass on the street without a second thought. But the Eunju of three days from now needed to be a little different. A married woman from whose body seduction leaked naturally. A woman whose stillness made men’s eyes linger, a woman who made them want to reach out and touch the moment they drew near.
Imagining that image, Eunju felt her own cheeks burn. Instead of neat straight hair, she pictured soft, slightly tousled waves. Hair that looked as if a scarf were barely holding the disarray in place. Hair that would naturally reveal the white nape of her neck. There wasn’t much time.
Still naked, Eunju walked straight from the mirror into the bathroom and took a quick shower. Then she headed first to the salon. Since it was a weekday afternoon, the shop was quiet. The stylist sat her in front of the mirror and lightly combed through her hair with her fingers.
“How would you like it done?”
Eunju looked at herself in the mirror. For a moment she hesitated. She could simply ask for waves. Asking to make it look a little softer would have been enough. Yet today, for some reason, she didn’t want to say those ordinary words.
Looking at the stylist in the mirror, Eunju smiled faintly. “Could you make it a little… a little like I’ve been a bit loose?”
The stylist’s hands paused. “Pardon?”
Eunju grew even more embarrassed after speaking. “Not too neat. A slightly undone feeling. I don’t mean anything bad by it…”
The stylist burst into laughter. “Ah, I think I understand. You want to look pretty for your husband, don’t you?”
Eunju saw her own face redden in the mirror. “Yes… something like that.”
It wasn’t a lie. She did want to look pretty for Minjun. But that wasn’t all. She wanted it for Hyeonwu too. For Doyun. And for the version of herself who would see their eyes upon her.
The stylist began to work on Eunju’s hair slowly. The strands were sectioned, lotion applied, rods wound. While she waited, Eunju studied her face in the mirror. A weekday afternoon salon. Coffee cups. Magazines. The sound of dryers. A middle-aged woman having her hair colored in the next chair. It was an utterly ordinary place. The stylist knew nothing. She probably thought a wife who wanted to look nice for her husband had simply come in for a treatment.
Eunju found that misunderstanding strangely pleasing.
Time passed and the rods came out. Warm air from the dryer moved through her hair. The stylist lifted, curled, and arranged the waves with her fingers. When she was finished, Eunju stared at her transformed reflection for a long time. Glossy waves spilled loosely over her shoulders. Not too messy, not too neat. Exactly the degree she had wanted.
Eunju took out the thin scarf she had prepared in advance. “Could I try tying it with this?”
When the stylist nodded with a smile, Eunju gathered her hair in front of the mirror. Strands slipped between her fingers; the waves, not fully tamed, gathered loosely. She tied the scarf around them as if barely restraining the disarray. The hair that had covered her shoulders lifted, naturally revealing the slender line of her neck and her pale shoulders.
Eunju drew a slow breath. With her hair up, the neck and shoulders revealed so clearly looked unfamiliar. She could hardly believe such white, delicate parts had always belonged to her body. For a moment the impulse to run her own hand along that nape rose inside her. She wanted to trace the line of her shoulder with her fingertips, to slowly explore the skin that continued downward. The thought made Eunju’s breathing falter just slightly. The fingers adjusting the scarf knot paused, and in the mirror the white nape and shoulders looked even more wanton than before.
With her lips lightly pressed together, Eunju gazed at herself in the mirror once more. At this level, the seduction seemed to have already begun from the very tips of her hair.
The stylist spoke with a satisfied face. “Does this match the feeling you wanted?”
Eunju met her own eyes in the mirror. “Yes. It’s perfect.”
While walking down the street after leaving the salon, Eunju kept catching her reflection in shop windows. She had only changed her hair, yet her entire body seemed different. Her shoulders, her gait, even the way she turned her head had all shifted slightly. She suddenly wondered what expressions Hyeonwu and Doyun would make when she walked into the workshop in three days with this hair. The moment they realized she had willingly stepped into the concept they had created for her.
Eunju imagined those faces. A small tingling stirred inside her chest. And beneath that tingling, the next preparation rose to mind.
Waxing.
