Sunlight on Eunju
Eunju visited the workshop two or three times a week now. At first she would tell Minjun, “I’m just going to feed the kids and come right back,” before heading out. Those words had become so natural. Minjun no longer asked questions. Sometimes he would simply say, “What are you bringing today?” and Eunju would laugh and answer, “Just myself this time.”
There were days when no one was at the workshop. Sometimes only Hyeonwu would be there, sprawled on the bed doing homework. Other times Doyun would be alone, editing photos. When both were present the room felt a little noisier. Eunju had slipped into the space so seamlessly that she now moved through it like it was part of her own life.
Then one day, Eunju stood in front of the mirror longer than usual. She opened the closet without thinking at first, but her hand kept hesitating. Would it look strange if she dressed up too much? Would the photos fall flat if she looked too ordinary? At her age, wouldn’t these clothes just seem ridiculous?
After pulling out several outfits and putting them back, Eunju finally chose a white tennis skirt. It was short and light, the kind of garment that would flutter with the slightest movement. The sort of skirt that made her want to tug it down instinctively when she sat or climbed stairs. She held it up in front of the mirror for a long time before finally slipping it on.
The top was a pale sky-blue camisole that clung lightly to her body and revealed a sliver of her navel. The woman in the mirror looked like a stranger. Her hair, left loose instead of neatly tied, the exposed line of her neck, her slender waist, and the long legs stretching beneath the skirt all stood out more vividly than she had expected. Eunju smiled, very faintly, at her reflection.
I might have gone a little overboard today.
But she didn’t dislike it.
When she stepped into the living room, Minjun looked up first. For a moment he forgot how to speak. Eunju deliberately acted casual as she picked up her bag.
“I’m going on a chulsa with the kids today.”
Minjun slowly scanned her outfit. His gaze belonged to a husband who knew every inch of her skin. Yet this bright, fresh version of Eunju felt new even to him.
“You’re really wearing that?”
Eunju smiled, a little embarrassed. “I wanted to see how I’d look in photos dressed like this.”
Minjun’s eyes stayed on her, unable to settle anywhere else. Eunju added playfully, “You can come watch if you want.”
He didn’t answer right away. That evening he had plans to meet Gyujin. After hearing how complicated things still were with his ex-wife, Minjun thought for a moment before saying, “I’m having dinner with Gyujin.”
Eunju paused while putting on her shoes and looked at him. “Really?”
“Yeah.”
“If the timing works, we can meet up nearby.”
Eunju smiled softly. “Gyujin will be surprised.”
Minjun gave a low chuckle. “That’s part of why I want to show him.”
Eunju didn’t ask what he meant. Minjun wanted to show his friend where his wife now stood. He wanted to reveal, even from a distance, a single frame that captured the strange state their marriage had reached. Eunju gave a light nod.
Both Hyeonwu and Doyun were at the workshop. When the door opened they looked up without much thought, then froze in place.
Eunju stood in the doorway wearing a white tennis skirt and a pale sky-blue camisole that showed a hint of her navel. She was no longer the nuna who washed cups in the corner, unpacked lunchboxes, or rested against the folding bed. In that room filled with worn desks, tangled cables, crumpled blankets, and the smell of delivery food, she floated like a different season altogether. Too bright. Too light. Impossible to ignore.
“Nuna…” Hyeonwu spoke first, but nothing followed.
Doyun kept his hand on the mouse, staring at her. Eunju noticed their reactions and nervously adjusted her bag strap. She tried to look unbothered, but an awkward smile spread across her lips first.
“What? Do I look weird?”
Hyeonwu shook his head quickly. “No.”
“I mean… that’s not what I…” Doyun couldn’t find the right words either.
Eunju watched their awkward silence for a moment, then spoke first. “Let’s go on that chulsa.”
Hyeonwu blinked. “Right now?”
“Yes.”
Eunju glanced down at the hem of her skirt before looking back at them. “I want to look pretty in the photos today.”
The air in the workshop froze again. A moment ago she had simply been a nuna who had dressed up unusually well. Now it was different. Eunju had asked them to photograph her. Hyeonwu shot up from where he had been lying. Doyun reached for the camera bag as if waking from a trance.
“Uh, just a second.”
“Where’s the charged battery…”
“We should bring the reflector too.”
Hyeonwu rummaged through a bag in the corner in a panic. “Memory card.”
“I know.”
Even as Doyun answered, his eyes kept drifting back to Eunju. She didn’t avoid his gaze. Today she had been the one to say it first. That she wanted to look pretty.
Hyeonwu’s hand paused on the reflector bag’s zipper. Doyun stopped organizing lenses and looked at her. The words hadn’t sounded like a joke. Eunju was genuinely curious how today’s version of herself would appear inside their cameras.
The three of them left the workshop not long after.
The location was an old park and alleyway not far from the studio. There were weathered brick walls, low stairs, the glass windows of an aged shop, and a small clearing where sunlight slanted in beautifully. It wasn’t a glamorous spot, but the afternoon light fell perfectly there.
On the way, Hyeonwu talked more than usual, rambling about the weather and mentioning twice how good the light was. Doyun, on the other hand, grew quieter. Even while adjusting his camera bag, his eyes would drift toward Eunju before snapping forward again.
Eunju walked between them and smiled softly. Until they left the workshop she had thought she was simply wearing something a little bold. But feeling the way they panicked, fumbled, and kept stealing glances at her changed something inside her. What she had brought today wasn’t just clothes. She had also brought the desire to be seen.
The moment they reached the clearing at the end of the alley and stepped into the sunlight, the atmosphere between the two young men shifted again. The light settled directly onto Eunju. The white skirt glowed far brighter than it had indoors, and the pale camisole made her skin look even clearer. Sunlight traced thinly across the exposed skin near her navel. Every time the breeze passed, the hem of her skirt fluttered lightly.
Hyeonwu stopped while setting down the reflector bag. Doyun paused with the camera half out of its case and swallowed. Eunju standing in the sunlight looked different. She truly seemed like a woman who had come out to step into a photograph.
Eunju noticed their silence and tilted her head slightly. “Why are you doing that again?”
Hyeonwu opened his mouth, then closed it. “It’s just…”
“Outside… you look even more…” He couldn’t finish.
Doyun lifted the camera instead. After checking her through the lens, he spoke in a lower voice than before.
“Nuna.”
“You’re really going to look incredibly beautiful today.”
Eunju almost smiled but caught herself, pressing her lips together. The words landed strangely against her body. They felt like both praise and a signal. Doyun took a step back.
“Could you stand in front of that wall for me?”
“The light is perfect right now.”
The shoot started awkwardly. Eunju didn’t know where to put her hands. Hyeonwu kept getting flustered watching how the light traveled up her legs while holding the reflector. Doyun pressed the shutter several times but kept lowering the camera as if catching his breath.
“Nuna, turn your head a little more to the left.”
Eunju obeyed. “Like this?”
“Yes.” Doyun’s voice dropped even lower. “That angle brings out your nose bridge better.”
Hyeonwu lifted the reflector slightly. Soft light rose from beneath Eunju’s face, illuminating her neck, jawline, and exposed shoulders. Doyun pressed the shutter.
Click.
The sound felt foreign at first. But after it repeated several times, Eunju gradually began to surrender her body to the rhythm.
“If the skirt flies up too much, hold it down gently with your hand,” Doyun said.
Eunju lightly pressed the hem. That single motion made Hyeonwu’s gaze waver. The long legs revealed beneath the short skirt and Eunju’s hand pressing it down formed a perfect frame. He quickly looked back at the reflector. Eunju noticed. She pretended not to, but something inside her tickled with quiet laughter.
“Hyeonwu.”
“Yes?”
“The reflector keeps dropping.”
“Ah, sorry!” Hyeonwu hurriedly raised it again.
Doyun chuckled softly from behind the camera.
People’s eyes began to linger as well. A middle-aged woman walking through the park glanced over. A man pushing his bicycle slowed down. Two young men standing in front of a nearby shop also turned to look at Eunju for a moment.
At first Eunju’s face burned. People were watching her. Watching her in this short skirt, in a top that showed her navel, posing in front of two younger men. But those gazes began to feel strangely different. It was embarrassing. Yet she didn’t want to run away. It felt as if, under the name of photography, she had been temporarily granted permission to accept stares she normally couldn’t have endured.
People looked as they passed. Doyun looked through his camera. Hyeonwu looked while catching his breath behind the reflector. Inside all those gazes, Eunju felt herself slowly becoming an actress.
At that moment, Minjun and Gyujin arrived near a café a short distance away. Minjun deliberately didn’t approach right away. He stopped one step back. Gyujin didn’t recognize her at first. Then he saw Eunju and froze.
“Eunju…” Gyujin muttered under his breath.
The woman who had thrown those strange words at him during their recent drinking session. Minjun’s wife, the one who was exploring those inclinations together with her husband. And now that woman stood in front of two young men, revealing her white thighs beneath an extremely short white skirt. Bathing in sunlight, smiling toward the camera, refusing to shy away from the eyes of passersby.
Gyujin couldn’t speak easily. Minjun watched Eunju in silence. Doyun said something to her while holding the camera. Following his instruction, Eunju stepped onto the stairs. The short skirt fluttered lightly in the wind. She instinctively lowered her hand to hold it down, and even that motion was captured inside Doyun’s shutter. Hyeonwu held the reflector and shifted slightly aside. His gaze remained cautious, but it could not completely leave her.
Minjun breathed in slowly as he watched. His wife was being seen by other men. And not secretly, not hidden, not in some shameful way. In bright sunlight. In a place where people walked by. Under the direction and gazes of two young men, she was posing of her own will.
A familiar heat rose inside Minjun. But this time it wasn’t simply the feeling of his wife being consumed as an object of desire. Eunju looked bright. Fresh. She was smiling. And that brightness stimulated him in an even stranger way.
Minjun realized he wasn’t a man who only grew aroused by his wife’s explicit sexual scenes. Eunju standing in bright sunlight before young men’s cameras, drawing people’s eyes. Eunju not avoiding those eyes, but instead becoming more beautiful inside them. That alone was enough to set him on fire.
Gyujin watched Minjun’s face. The expression was strange. It wasn’t jealousy. It wasn’t anger. Minjun was staring at Eunju without even daring to breathe deeply. His lips were pressed together, his jaw tight with the faintest tension. Yet his eyes burned with unnatural heat. He looked like a man forcing something too powerful down inside himself, leaving his exterior rigid.
Something twisted inside Gyujin. To him, marriage was something that had to be protected. A wife belonged at her husband’s side, and another man’s gaze was something to guard against. His ex-wife’s betrayal had begun exactly where that line had collapsed. But the couple before him now was different. Eunju stood before other men’s eyes. Minjun was allowing it. No, it was more than allowance. Even the fact that the scene was intensely arousing Minjun was painfully clear to Gyujin.
When Minjun had first confessed their inclinations, Gyujin had barely understood it with his head, but his heart could not accept it at all. The idea that a married couple could explore such desires together felt too distant and alien. Yet the two people he was watching now defied his expectations. Eunju stood before other men’s gazes, and Minjun was not only permitting it but receiving powerful stimulation from the sight. And strangely, their relationship showed no cracks. Despite emotions Gyujin could not comprehend, the couple seemed even stronger. That fact confused him more than anything.
Doyun moved Eunju toward the wall this time.
“Nuna, keep your hands naturally at your sides.”
“Don’t pose too deliberately. Just stop smiling for a second…”
Eunju let her smile fade. In that instant the mood of the photograph changed. The woman who had been smiling brightly a moment ago suddenly carried a subtle sensuality the moment her smile disappeared. She still wore the same white skirt and navel-baring camisole, but her eyes had changed. Doyun paused before pressing the shutter. Hyeonwu grew quiet behind the reflector. Eunju could feel them looking at her differently.
In that brief silence, one of the passing men turned to look at her again. Minjun saw that gaze too. His chest tightened.
Gyujin asked quietly, “Are you okay?”
Minjun answered without taking his eyes off Eunju. “Yeah.”
“With… other men looking at her like that?”
Minjun smiled faintly. “She’s doing it because she wants to.”
Gyujin couldn’t reply. Minjun finally glanced at him.
“And I’m watching too.”
The words were quiet, but they landed heavily on Gyujin.
The shoot continued for a long time. Eunju grew more natural. At first her hand would dart down whenever the skirt fluttered, but later she began to accept even that movement as part of the pose. The hand that had been self-conscious about her exposed navel gradually relaxed. Hyeonwu tried not to miss any of her movements even while holding the reflector. Doyun’s face grew increasingly serious behind the camera.
“Good.”
“Just like that.”
“Eyes a little more this way.”
Eunju moved according to Doyun’s voice. She didn’t mind the commands. Because they came with the reason of photography. Within that reason, she could become bolder.
From a distance, Minjun watched everything. The way his wife gradually learned the rhythm of the shoot between two young men. The way her initially awkward smile slowly became aware of the camera, the light, and began to use the eyes watching her. It struck him more powerfully than he had expected.
Eunju being placed before other men’s desire was not all of it. She was using that desire to become more beautiful herself. To be seen more. To be photographed more.
The shoot paused for a moment. Eunju laughed as she tucked her hair behind her ear. Hyeonwu lowered the reflector and handed her water. Doyun showed her the camera screen and explained something. That was when Eunju spotted Minjun in the distance. She looked surprised for a second, then gave a very small smile. Minjun nodded back faintly.
Eunju noticed Gyujin beside him and paused a little longer. But she didn’t avoid them. Instead she turned back toward the camera. When Doyun looked at her questioningly, Eunju said lightly, “It’s nothing. Let’s keep shooting.”
She stepped back into the sunlight. This time she was more conscious of it. Minjun was watching. Gyujin was watching too. The knowledge made her more embarrassed. At the same time, strangely, it made her stand straighter.
Doyun pressed the shutter.
Click.
The sound rang softly through the afternoon air. Eunju looked at the camera. Light touched her face. The hem of her skirt fluttered in the breeze. Her exposed midriff, her long legs, and her slightly raised face all entered a single frame.
After the shoot ended, Eunju approached Hyeonwu and Doyun to check the camera screen. When she saw herself in the images, she was momentarily speechless. She looked brighter than she had imagined. Younger. And more beautiful.
Hyeonwu said carefully, “Nuna, the photos today turned out really well.”
Doyun laughed quietly while looking at the screen. “They say a photo captures the photographer’s heart too… Looking at these, it’s obvious how prettily we were seeing you, Nuna.”
Eunju stared at her own face on the screen and smiled slowly. “Then it’s a success.”
She hesitated for a moment, then spoke in a slightly smaller voice.
“Then…”
“Look at me that way during the main shoot too.”
Hyeonwu and Doyun looked at her at the same time. Eunju lowered her eyes to the screen, embarrassed.
“The way you saw me today is in the photos, right?”
“If you look at me with those eyes… I think I’ll feel less ashamed.”
“Because it seems like in your eyes, my body wasn’t just something embarrassing, but something pretty.”
After she spoke, Eunju felt her face grow hot. She knew exactly what kind of request she had just made.
From far away, Minjun was watching that smile. Gyujin was watching it with him. Each lost in very different thoughts.
