What Is a Romance Fantasy? A Tearful Struggle for Love
What exactly is a romance fantasy? It's the tear-jerking saga of those battling to claim love. Sometimes the numbers match up between men and women. In those cases, each person's love story takes center stage. But just as there's a harem genre, the opposite exists too. Many romance fantasies kick off as reverse harems. Men's fantasies revolve around one guy with a bunch of women flocking to him. Women's fantasies? A bunch of amazing guys groveling after one woman.
To make that happen, plot logic gets tossed out the window. The male leads fall head over heels for the heroine, no questions asked. Their backgrounds, their upbringings—none of it stands a chance against her charm. No matter how elite their origins. No matter their insane talents. Those are just tools to win her heart. And it doesn't stop there. After they meet, a string of incidents keeps drawing them together. Sharing classes, meals, study sessions. But that's not all. They end up in danger. Through it all, they learn more—and deeper—about each other.
Most of those 'dangers' just get handwaved with the academy getting attacked, though.
It started out textbook perfect. The academy came under a sudden assault. In the chaos, the four guys gathered around Seria, pulling off feats together. Normally, one of them should've awakened their ability, but Seria growing instead felt a bit off—still, things rolled along the standard track. Next up should've been the five of them banding together for a counterattack. Someone after Seria awakens, the others get fired up and grow too. That's the classic flow.
So why the hell is Seria here?
Gazing at Seria, who was doing one last ability check before departure, Abel couldn't shake the thought that maybe he'd misunderstood even the romance fantasy part.
Kalligo, who'd shown his interest from the jump. Flam and Portus, a bit later but no less eager to flaunt their affections. And Rel, the last to join—less flashy than the trio, but he at least held back on their shared flaw of cringey lines. Seria slots right in among them. That's how their story progresses. Abel himself had bowed out quick to avoid messing it up.
But the reality he'd ended up with? The polar opposite of a standard romance fantasy lineup.
"Abel."
Maybe unable to accept it, Kalligo—standing off at a distance—called out to him.
"Can't you persuade Miss Seria?"
"You think I haven't tried? I told her she'd learn tons there, it'd be comfier, and above all, it'd benefit her family and barony back home."
"And she still chose you over us?"
Abel's face twisted horribly at that. Chose you guys' alternative—me? Don't pick words that terrifying. It made him feel like the ridiculous romance fantasy protagonist. You're the leads. I'm the extra. I just wanna do my job right, succeed on my own path, and get a passing mention now and then!
Unaware—or maybe fully aware—of Abel's inner turmoil, Kalligo clutched his head.
"This is when being from the Empire stings the most. If I'd been from the Ascal Kingdom, I'd have stuck with Miss Seria from the start!"
"…."
That it was sincere, not just talk, made it all the scarier. The other three probably felt the same.
Kalligo's tearful pleading dragged on. He'd wait forever, eagerly anticipating her arrival. The way he insisted on "myself" instead of "us"—singular, not plural—was impressive in its own right. The fight among men over one woman is brutal. Watching these pride-discarding males clash was enough to bring tears to anyone's eyes.
For now, since their teams' zones were close, Abel talked him down: they'd link up if needed. Teaming up against tough foes was standard, so he hinted at that possibility and told him to chill and wait.
"Hmmm."
Kalligo still eyed Abel suspiciously, not thrilled. And who could blame him? With Seria openly picking Abel, not seeing him as a rival would be weirder. But what could he do? They needed this more. In the end, Kalligo wrapped up with a "take care of her"—not forgetting to warn Seria too—before heading back.
Abel thought that was it. Until Flam showed up right after.
"Abel."
"Ah, come on. We're about to head out—what're you doing? Who's next, Portus?"
"Huh? Yeah, that was the plan."
"…."
Only after a veiled threat to cling to Seria if they didn't back off did Abel finally get to leave the academy. Naturally, he brooded over whether romance fantasies were cursed or if his genre mix-up made him the idiot.
The academy's surprise strike. They fought at a massive disadvantage. But the enemies weren't always sitting pretty either.
"Empire intel spotted some enemy forces in a village on the capital outskirts. They took hits from the academy battle, but don't get cocky, students. They still have way more experience than you."
The academy had tons of healers on staff. Most from foreign nations, over half from top-tier families. If these kids got seriously hurt—or worse—it'd be no simple accident. To prevent that, elite healers were concentrated here. And that was the key to saving student lives during the attack.
Flip side: the attackers, focused solely on offense, couldn't spare healers. They retreated with their wounds untreated.
"…So, per the principal, the enemies lingering outskirts are the wounded and a handful guarding them. No easy fight, but compared to the academy, we've got a shot."
Of course the academy, Empire, and kingdoms wouldn't just throw away valuable ability users. Victory odds were high. Foes weakened, allies with easy backup. Perfect time to gain real combat experience—great for the future.
"Abel… I'm a bit nervous. That's normal, right?"
"Totally. You should be."
"Hoo… hoo…."
She was way too tense. Seria's breathing shook hard. Probably flashing back to the academy raid—unexpected carnage everywhere, injuries galore, some never waking. For someone from a quiet rural barony, never knowing real fights, it must've been a nightmare.
"You sure about heading out?"
Probing gently, she shook her head fiercely: no regrets. Necessary step, had to tough it out.
"Liar."
"Total lie."
Irshu and Tarshu rejected her outright. Still lurking behind Abel, they whispered—just loud enough for him—wary eyes on Seria.
This wasn't good. Same team, but if their key ranged support duo acted like this, how was he supposed to tank up front? Frustrating, but hard to call out—Abel's first time surrounded by this many girls. In short, no different from those four orbiting Seria.
"…Our sector's this northern village on the capital outskirts. Low population, but recent supply spikes—mostly wound-treatment stuff."
"Injured. Blood."
"Hurt. Enemies."
"The young ladies are right. Multiple Ability Supremacy scum in this village. We'll cover east of it, watch for confirmation, then breach."
Meanwhile, peering at the map, Seria frowned worriedly.
"Abel, villages have people in them, right?"
"…Probably high chance."
"Then we can't attack! What if civilians get caught in it?!"
Valid concern. And these were Empire citizens. Hurt an Ascal Kingdom native like Abel or her? Massive fallout.
"No worries, Miss Seria."
But Abel just smiled reassuringly.
"Think the academy would've sent us without prepping for that?"
"What do you…."
"You learned it in class. Abilities are way more diverse than we imagine."
Body enhancement. Weapon mastery like extensions of self. Elemental control. And countless more—that's this world. From Abel's view, his genre mix-up wasn't for nothing.
