Chapter 194: Revealed
Liberty Island.
The Island of Liberty.
This small island, home to the Statue of Liberty, was built nearly a hundred years ago and wasn't a particularly popular tourist destination.
The island's visitors were usually foreigners or families with children.
But today was different.
“Heeeey— Is that the Statue of Liberty or something?”
“It’s smaller than I thought.”
“Looks like we can go inside!”
It was because six women, so beautiful you’d be hard-pressed to see them even on TV, had appeared on the island. In the 21st century, where beauty easily goes viral on social media, a beautiful appearance held its own kind of authority.
After all, beautiful or handsome people were very likely to be famous influencers or actors. Moreover, a group of six such beauties gathered together strongly suggested they were there for some kind of photoshoot.
However, people only let out faint cheers or held up their smartphones to take pictures of the witches; no one approached them directly. Protecting a celebrity’s privacy was, after all, part of the American civic consciousness.
“Yohan, Yohan-! Let’s hurry and go inside!”
“Yes, Teacher. Ah, I think we have to pay here.”
“Can’t we use a card?”
“I’m not sure.”
“You can use a card. I just hacked it.”
“...Makina. That’s a bit much.”
And so, Yohan’s group was able to enjoy their date leisurely, without being disturbed by the crowd. However, there was one thing they couldn’t prevent: their photos being uploaded to social media.
And while monitoring social media, the CIA and other American intelligence agencies discovered their photos and succeeded in pinpointing their location.
“Damn, they really use teleportation?”
“It’s thousands of miles from Korea to here...”
“Calculated in a straight line, they could probably travel to space.”
The American intelligence agencies realized that the abilities they possessed weren't just about raw power, but something that could completely shatter modern civilization.
To be able to move freely regardless of distance? In other words, didn’t that mean they could freely assassinate a target, no matter where they were?
Faced with a superpower that could neither be blocked nor avoided, the intelligence agency began to grow excited. They needed to recruit them as quickly as possible.
“What should we do?”
“Persuade them by any means necessary. Avoid threats if possible. We received intel from the agent who went to Korea that our psychological analysis was wrong.”
“Understood.”
Even if they couldn’t use threats, it didn’t matter. Weren’t they America? The land of the free, the greatest nation of the 21st century, the greatest empire in history.
Even without threats, there were more than enough people who wanted to be in their embrace. Furthermore, seducing Yohan’s group, who didn’t seem to have any particular patriotism, looked very easy.
‘The women are the ones with the power… but the fact that they’re all tied to one man must mean we just have to seduce the man.’
Besides, he was a man who dragged around five or six women. He had to be crazy for women, so planting a honey trap agent didn’t seem very difficult.
The intelligence agents began searching for a honey trap agent who would appeal to Yohan while monitoring their movements.
This was the age of 21st-century social media. An era where it was impossible for anyone extraordinary to escape the public eye.
On a sesame seed bun, one, two, three, four, five beef patties. In between, enough sauce and cheese to clog your arteries. Six sets of that.
Staring at the XXX-sized hamburgers that showed off the American spirit, the witches let out sounds of amazement.
“Whoa… what is this?”
“Is it a burger for monsters?”
“Are there monsters here?”
“Then… people eat this…?”
A shocked Margaret looked at the Americans walking around, who easily looked to be over 200-300 kg, and nodded her head.
Having been in Korea, where severe obesity is rare, and in another world where food wasn't so plentiful, she hadn't known humans could get that big.
They must get that fat from eating things like this. Amazed and horrified, the witches pondered how to eat the hamburgers in front of them before finally figuring out how to use a fork and knife.
Even after cutting it into quarters, and then cutting those quarters into four more pieces, it was still hard to eat. Watching people hold the massive burger in one hand and take huge bites out of it filled them with sheer amazement.
“Yohan, Yohan.”
“Yes, Teacher.”
“Is it okay to eat like that? Won’t it cause some kind of problem?”
“They do say obesity is the root of all kinds of adult lifestyle diseases.”
“Really? Then there must be a way to solve it, right?”
“There isn’t.”
“There isn’t? Aren’t they eating like that because there is?”
“No, there isn’t.”
As he let out a hollow laugh watching the Americans who seemed to be throwing their lives away, Yohan felt a steady gaze on him from somewhere and looked around.
Inside the shop, no. Outside the shop, nothing. As he scanned the thousands of windows of the many buildings one by one, his eyes met with a glinting lens.
‘—There it is.’
Yohan immediately put his hand in his pocket. A magic circle that could use spatial magic was drawn inside his pants pocket.
Scrolls or talismans with magic written on them could be lost or stolen, but this was an item created under the logic that a magic circle sewn directly into his pants and underwear couldn’t be lost.
He hadn’t expected to use it so soon, but Yohan skillfully used the spatial magic. At the same time, a portion of the french fries piled up like a mountain in front of him vanished.
“Huh? What was that, Yohan? What did you do?”
“Yes, well. Made a little donation.”
“Aww, but it looks like everyone here eats well enough.”
Hearing Margaret’s chiding remark, who had realized he’d used magic, Yohan quietly nodded. Then he looked back at the spot where the lens had glinted.
The gaze, which had persisted for a while, disappeared right after he sent the french fries to the lens’s location.
Fortunately, no other gazes followed.
‘This shouldn’t interfere with our date.’
The agent who was monitoring Yohan and his group of witches returned from a quick trip to the restroom to find his colleague collapsed on the floor. He rushed over in horror.
Wondering what on earth had happened, he turned him over, only to find french fries embedded in his colleague’s face.
“What the hell is this…”
Before he could figure out what was going on, he first reported to headquarters. A colleague had been killed. Cause of death: french fries.
Upon hearing the murder weapon, headquarters berated him as if he were talking nonsense, but they fell silent after he sent a single photo.
[...Bravo 4. Get out of there.]
“What about the body?”
[We’ll send a separate clean-up crew. Evacuate immediately. Over.]
Hearing the order from headquarters, the agent immediately left the scene. A moment later, the dispatched clean-up crew arrived swiftly and collected the body.
The collected body was taken straight to the autopsy room, where the intelligence agency’s forensic pathologist exclaimed in shock at the sight of the corpse with french fries embedded in it.
“I’ve never seen a body like this in my life. Was he shot with some kind of french fry gun?”
“Figuring that out is your job, doctor.”
“Damn it, I’ve never even seen something like this in a textbook.”
The forensic pathologist began the autopsy, grumbling all the while. After completely dissecting the body, the pathologist was able to determine the exact cause of death.
The exact cause of death was a cerebral infarction. In other words, he died because a part of his brain was blocked.
“The french fries embedded in the brain displaced an exactly equal mass of brain tissue. The resulting compression blocked blood flow, causing a cerebral infarction.”
“...Doctor, so in simple terms.”
“I have no idea how this is possible. It’s as if the french fries teleported… Is this the work of a psychic or something? What is this?”
Teleportation. Hearing that word, the agent nodded and left the room. It was already known that the witches with Yohan had the ability to teleport.
But the moment they learned it could be used for offensive purposes, their threat level skyrocketed to the extreme.
It wouldn’t have been so shocking if they had simply teleported over and shot him with a gun. But to kill a person by teleporting food into their brain?
In other words, didn’t this mean that no matter where you were on Earth, you couldn’t escape the threat of assassination? And this was when the agents had been using a super-optical lens from inside a building, a position impossible to spot with the naked eye.
“...How am I supposed to report this?”
The agent wondered how he was supposed to report to his superior that they were unstoppable, and furthermore, that one couldn’t even expect them to have any humanity.
But his deliberation didn’t last long. He decided to just not think about it.
Let the higher-ups worry about it. There was no reason for a grunt like him to do so.
And so, in a place unknown to Yohan, the threat level of Yohan and the witches was steadily rising.
