The Inquisitor They Call the Adultery Investigator
Adultery. It is a violation of the social contract forged through the sacred rite of marriage, and a clear act of heresy against the holy will of the Goddess. Dealing with people who commit such deeds without a shred of shame often means staring straight into the darkest depths of the human soul.
The Rucella Kingdom where I was born is no exception. It is hardly unusual for the queen to take a lover among her royal guards, for a princess betrothed to a foreign prince to suddenly swell with child—leading to the beheading of a servant—or for the king to begin visiting a monastery with unusual frequency, only for the belly of one of its nuns to start rounding. My magic, by some cruel twist of fate, proved perfectly suited for investigating such matters. As a result, the Church assigned me the specialized role of handling them.
Aside from the Pope himself, no one may interfere with our sacred duties. Unfortunately, every rule has its exceptions… and when the target is powerful enough, one must be prepared to stake their very life on the outcome. Investigating someone like a king, for instance, requires exactly that kind of resolve. Even then, failure is far from rare.
All clergy affiliated with this department hold the official title of Inquisitor, yet most people refer to us with a mocking twist of the tongue.
And honestly, they aren’t wrong. Among all forms of heresy, our primary task in the family affairs division is to root out every last instance of infidelity and deliver punishment. It’s no surprise the world has come to call us that.
And right now…
I never imagined I’d be returning home like this.
I have come back to my homeland. And, by some bitterly ironic coincidence, it is to investigate an adultery case involving none other than my own family.
