Promotion Desire — Very High (2)
After turning it over in my head for quite a while, I started typing.
Remarks 2 — To have Choi Woojin recognize your promotion, you must pass an examina...
"No."
If I just wrote "exam," Lim Jiwoo's compliance would be a one-and-done affair. I needed wording with some staying power. But first things first.
Remarks 2 — The content of the promotion examination is determined solely by Choi Woojin, and the details of the promotion examination shall not be disclosed to anyone.
I knew what I was about to do to Lim Jiwoo wasn't exactly something I could be proud of, so I made sure none of it would leak. Not that it would look strange anyway. Keeping other people's conditions confidential was common enough inside the company — holding the details of a promotion exam to herself wouldn't raise any eyebrows.
And then.
Remarks 3 — To receive promotion points, you must satisfy Choi Woojin's sexual stamina. Failure to satisfy Choi Woojin will result in no points being awarded.
Set it up like this, and Lim Jiwoo would do whatever it took to satisfy my stamina. All I'd have to do was hit her with a not quite. That would give me an excuse to fail her this round and set up the next one. Continuity, locked in.
But then I thought about it again.
"...Satisfy?"
As your average late-twenties office guy, I could go twice. Three times was honestly pushing it. And if I was tired, once and done. Could a guy like me really use "I wasn't satisfied" as an excuse to book a follow-up?
"......"
I thought it over for a moment, then switched into Administrator Mode.

...I felt a brief flicker of existential whiplash looking at that. I hadn't been small to begin with, or soft, and I could already go twice. Still. The more the merrier, the bigger the better — a man is never satisfied. Hell, some guys even take supplements just to shoot more for the visual. This should be...
"...enough, right?"
I hadn't actually dropped my pants to check, so I couldn't say for sure. I gave the space between my legs a solemn glance, then switched back to Lim Jiwoo's screen.
For any other woman, this would have been more than enough. But I had a personal score to settle with Lim Jiwoo, and I wanted to mix a little of my own taste into it. Earlier, watching that woman who'd always dumped her work on me grovel just to get on my good side had definitely pulled something sadistic out of me. And since that sadism was already awake, I wanted Lim Jiwoo's humiliation to run even deeper...
"Huh?"
I'd tried to add a fourth Remarks field, but the app rejected it outright — insufficient HR Score.
I knew Lim Jiwoo was waiting, but I needed to know what this meant. I hit back and started browsing through the HR Management App. That's when I spotted an explanation I'd been too rushed to read earlier.
Intensive Management Targets react differently to examination content depending on their Promotion Desire status. However, they fundamentally believe they must pass the examiner's test in order to be promoted.
"This is..."
If Promotion Desire was low, they'd tell you to go screw yourself. If it was high, they'd grovel. And more importantly...
"...It's a justification."
Whether their Promotion Desire was high or low, they wouldn't find it strange that they had to pass my "exam" to get promoted. Even if that exam consisted of satisfying me.
And then.
Each Intensive Management Target is granted 3 Remarks slots. One additional slot is unlocked for every 5 HR Score points earned thereafter.
Even if they had Remarks like these attached to them...
Meanwhile.
"Ah..."
Lim Jiwoo's current HR Score was 0. She'd only just been registered as an Intensive Management Target, so of course she had no performance on the books yet.
So if I just slammed her score all the way to 100, I could fill in up to twenty-three Remarks?
When an employee's HR Score reaches 100, that employee is promoted to the next rank. This is absolute. Department members will regard the promotion as only natural.
I could theoretically stack twenty-three Remarks that way — but then Lim Jiwoo, currently an Assistant Manager, would jump straight to Manager. Nobody inside the company would question it, sure, but people outside KP would definitely find it weird. A Manager at twenty-nine — and that's Korean age, not even international age? Not completely impossible, but it would look off.
So dumping a hundred points on her just because I wanted more Remarks slots was a bad idea. I needed to be careful about handing out points in general. That said...
If an HR Score drops further from 0 or below, the employee is demoted. In the case of regular Staff-level employees, dropping below 0 results in termination.
Threatening her with a deduction from a score of zero was also something I needed to be careful about. Then again, the score itself was already a weapon — I probably wouldn't need to go as far as deductions. And more importantly, I needed to give her points if I wanted to add more "settings" of my own.
"I think I've got the hang of it..."
I probably wouldn't need all twenty-three Remarks anyway. If I used this score well, I could "use" Lim Jiwoo just as well. And the most important factor for making that work was...
Promotion Desire consists of five levels:
Promotion Desire.
Based on the description, the behaviors went something like this. Very Low — they wouldn't even half-ass it. They'd refuse to work at all, like they were begging to get fired. Normal — they'd do just enough. High — they'd try to get on my good side so they could work harder. And Very High...
"...What the hell. Like they're betting their life on it."
They'd move solely for the sake of promotion, like they were in genuine danger of dying if they didn't get it. For the record, Lim Jiwoo's Promotion Desire was Low. It wasn't that she didn't work — she just preferred not to, so she used her little schemes to dump everything on me. Something like that. That said, Promotion Desire and actual ability were clearly separate things.
"It's not like Lim Jiwoo is bad at her jo—"
Riiing—!
"Ah."
I'd spent too long looking into this. I still hadn't finished reading the HR Management App's documentation when Lim Jiwoo called.
I'd confirmed everything I needed to confirm.
Yeah. Whose phone this originally was, why it got dropped, how far the effects went, whether I could actually influence promotions, how long I could keep using it — I had no idea. And honestly, I didn't care anymore. If I checked my own Promotion Desire with this app, it'd probably be sitting at Very Low. Getting dumped on. Exhausted. Not wanting to work. When your job is like that, having a little toy like this is nice, isn't it? And if I ever used this on a superior instead of a woman, my own promotion would become ridiculously easy.
"Let's go..."
I got my head together and headed to where Lim Jiwoo was waiting. The buses had all left; she was standing there alone.
Lim Jiwoo—
Thud!
—shoved her suitcase into the back seat and climbed into the passenger seat.
"What were you doing that made you so late?"
"I was letting the car warm up for a bit. It's winter."
"Ah... right."
It was a gasoline car that didn't really need warming up, but she didn't seem to know much about cars, so she bought it immediately.
"Where should I take you, then?"
"Where do you live, Woojin-ssi?"
"Anyang."
"Then just head toward the office. I'll take it from there."
"Ah, yes. I'll head toward the company for now."
I punched the office address into the GPS and pulled out slowly.
"How long to Seoul?"
"About... an hour and a half, according to this."
"An hour and a half... so we'll get there around six."
Right. Six in the evening, we'd arrive at the office. But would she actually be leaving for home at six?
"......"
"......"
I smirked without making a sound and snuck a glance sideways. Lim Jiwoo had her legs crossed, looking at her phone.
...She was so fucking pretty it was almost offensive.
Those sly, sharply upswept eyes. A nose that drew the eye even more from the side. Lips that curved up just slightly, like she was born with a smile. And below that — maybe it was the way she had her arms crossed while looking at her phone, but her volume was on full, shameless display. A handful. Or more than a handful. And beneath that, her long legs stretched out, crossed in a way that was almost artful.
She must have felt my gaze, because the moment she turned her head, I pretended I hadn't been looking and stared straight ahead.
And then, to me:
"Hey, Woojin-ssi."
"Yes?"
"How does my promotion work?"
Completely out of nowhere, Lim Jiwoo asked about her own promotion. And that was the important part — the out-of-nowhereness. The fact that she was asking a junior about her promotion at all meant the HR Management App was definitely working on her.
As if to confirm my theory:
"There's something you need to do for me."
"Need to do... ah."
Lim Jiwoo thought about what she had to do for me, then scrunched her face like a college student staring down an assignment she really didn't want to touch. Thanks to my growing understanding of the app, I could guess why: her Promotion Desire was Low.
If I'd cranked it all the way up to Very High like before, she wouldn't be scrunching her face — she'd be panting like a dog, stripping right then and there. It wasn't Very Low, either. Just Low. And that in-between number made her act like this:
"...Woojin-ssi, can't you just promote me? I work hard, and I'm good at my job. You know that better than anyone."
It wasn't that she had no desire for promotion — she just found it annoying and unpleasant to actually work for it. And that was coming out as her signature fox-like act.
"I can't do that. This is a promotion exam — personal feelings can't come into it. You'll take the exam properly, everything by the book, and then I'll decide."
"Hnnnnngh..."
Not a chance. The moment I shut down her little fox act, Lim Jiwoo let out a long, openly uncomfortable sigh. It wasn't the kind of thing you did in front of a "superior," but with that distinctive face of hers, it almost came off as a cute little tantrum.
She went quiet after that, apparently thinking about how she could get promoted without satisfying me. I took the opportunity, while we were stopped at a light, to check the HR Management App.
First...
Remarks 1 — Regardless of Promotion Desire, always remains curious about her own promotion status and asks Choi Woojin about it.
Deleted that immediately. The promotion conversation had already happened, so I didn't need it anymore. Once I deleted it, Remarks 2 and 3 from the parking lot shifted up to Remarks 1 and 2. That freed up a slot... but I didn't need to add anything right now, so I kept my mouth shut and kept driving toward the office.
But about thirty minutes later.
"Thanks, I'll get going. Drive safe."
Maybe because I'd removed the bit about talking promotions in the car, Lim Jiwoo unbuckled her seatbelt like she was about to get right out.
That's when I did it.
Promotion Desire — Very High(±)
"......"
"Didn't you say you were leaving?"
The moment I yanked her Promotion Desire all the way up to Very High, Lim Jiwoo froze with her hand on the door handle. The HR Score needed some explaining, but the name "Promotion Desire" was about as straightforward as it got. At Very Low, she'd lie down and tell promotion to go to hell. At Very High...
"...Um, W-Woojin-ssi."
"Yes?"
"That promotion exam... could I... take it today? Are you free?"
"Today? I mean, we could, but didn't you have other plans? You were about to leave, so I figured..."
"No, I... that's... I..."
This was how a person became pathetic. The same Lim Jiwoo who'd looked down on me, dumped all her work on me, used me — was this even the same woman?
"...I thought about it, and it wasn't anything that important, so... the exam today seems more important than that, so I'd like to just take the exam today, um..."
She fidgeted, her head bowed.
"You know what the exam consists of, right?"
"I know... yes."
"What is it? Say it yourself."
Might as well use her.
