Chapter 42: The Twin Sisters
She was waiting for these old folks and women to bravely stand up!
She was willing to protect the weak, but if even these weaklings chose to submit to themselves, what obligation did she have to shield them?
She was a cop, and she'd been upholding the last shred of justice and morality in this apocalypse.
But she refused to be some stupid, laughable bleeding-heart saint!
She was ready to save others, but she couldn't save those who'd already abandoned themselves!
"These two little chicks can stay!"
Zhou Zhengyu pointed at two girls about fourteen or fifteen among the children. "These two little ladies are pretty fine—keep 'em to reward the brothers!"
Xiao Yi glanced at the two girls. Both wore junior high uniforms with ponytails, looking pure and adorable.
And Xiao Yi noticed something else: not only were they gorgeous, but they were identical!
A pair of twin sisters!
Forget Scarface and his crew—even Xiao Yi felt a flicker of temptation in his heart.
Top-tier stuff.
The twin sisters huddled together, trembling, heads bowed, not daring to make a peep.
No resistance. No protest.
"As for the rest of you women—including you, Officer Si—if you wanna keep staying in our shelter, you've got two choices!"
Zhou Zhengyu sneered, thrusting out one finger and bellowing.
"One: get the hell out right now!"
Zhou Zhengyu smugly raised a second finger.
"Two: serve my brothers right!"
He shot a provocative glance at Si Ruoqing, then raked his eyes viciously over the crowd. "Any objections? Speak up now if you've got 'em! This is a democratic meeting today—anyone can stand and share their thoughts!"
Scarface ground his machete nearby, head cocked, glaring murderously at the others. The eight men behind him sneered as they closed in, flaunting their weapons with thuggish swagger.
Silent intimidation.
No one stood. No one spoke. Everyone cowered, heads down.
Si Ruoqing stared in disappointment, closed her eyes, drew a deep breath—and finally let her fury erupt in a low growl. "I built this shelter! I led you to scavenge most of the supplies here. On what grounds are you kicking me out?"
"On the blades in our hands! On most of us agreeing! Gun barrel or vote, doesn't matter—we say you go. Though the brothers here all admire Officer Si's charm. Stay, and we'll serve you real good! Hahahaha!" Scarface howled with mad laughter.
Si Ruoqing whipped her head toward the silent old folks and women. "You think I should leave too?"
"Officer Si, just go!" An old man rose, jabbing a finger at her. "We don't want you here!"
"Yeah, leave!" A plump, sour-faced middle-aged woman stood too. "It's 'cause of you, saving every stray—our supplies vanished too fast! The mall stuff could've lasted longer. Go! You're not welcome!"
"Yeah! Get out!"
"Scram!"
The rest of the old people and women piled on.
Si Ruoqing's face drained white. She couldn't fathom it—people she'd risked her life for, turning on her like this!
Xiao Yi watched the farce coldly from the side. He'd been ready to strike, wipe out every last ugly bastard here.
But seeing the old folks and women desperately shoving Si Ruoqing out... something felt off.
He decided to wait. See how this played out.
"Fine. I'm gone." Si Ruoqing's voice was hollow, all hope shattered.
"Hold up, Officer Si! You love helping folks, right? Take these kids too!" A young housewife jumped up, grabbing Si Ruoqing's arm. "They're dead weight here. Don't take 'em, and we'll feed 'em to the zombies!"
Si Ruoqing eyed the three huddled children.
A wide-eyed little loli, maybe seven or eight. The two twin girls.
Their clear, innocent gazes softened her resolve.
"Fine. I'll take the kids." She turned to Xiao Yi and the other teammates. "You coming?"
"Hmph! I'd die before staying with these scum!" The hot-blooded teen girl Xiao Liu snorted and hurried after Si Ruoqing.
The other women snorted too, striding toward the door behind her.
"Good luck." Xiao Yi shot a mocking sneer at Scarface and Zhou Zhengyu, then followed Si Ruoqing out.
