Prologue: Holy Crap, This Game's Scary as Hell—Who Recommended This "Masterpiece"?
It'd been a solid twelve years since I'd started conquering games, clearing every damn one in sight. But now that I'd beaten them all, I was bored out of my mind, pacing like a caged animal, until some community rec caught my eye and I dove in.
The problem? A grotesque creature burst out of nowhere and hit me right in the eyes. I'd always enjoyed horror games as long as they had censorship options. But what the hell do you do when the characters look that messed up from the jump, with no filters in sight?
And the kicker—this cursed game was one of YouTube's "all-time masterpiece" picks. Oh, and calling DigCraft a thriller? What, did the Andy Man scene by the water freak you out so bad you bought it and never played? ...
Feeling awkwardly nostalgic about my own bad history, I posted again on the community.
While scrolling comments, a weird link jumped out, and I clicked it without thinking. Turned out to be a mod for the game I was playing. The name alone had me rolling my eyes.
"Jesus, Super Coward Mode? Are they mocking me...?"
Pissed at these assholes treating me like a punk, I muttered to myself and kept scrolling.
"Even so, that's a hit to my pride... Huh?"
The description was brutally straightforward.
Our Super Coward Mode is for total wimps even too scared for the base game Snow Castle. Here's what we change!
Original: (Roughly: some grotesque giant tentacle monster)
Changed: (Roughly: a cute girl in a pathetic doll mask)
That's not all—we wipe out everything that might disgust or terrify you! Weapons get nerfed too! Join the Super Coward Club, you wuss. Like it? Shut up and hit recommend.
After reading the whole mod description, I was annoyed by the overly tough-guy tone, but my hand moved to the download button on autopilot.
"What a devilish temptation. It's clearly bullshit, but I want to try it."
All the freakish creature textures swapped for lame, cute ones? Some even turned into straight-up pretty characters. This modder gets it—they're a total weeb.
I checked if it'd mess with the story; turns out other mods don't either, so perfect.
It's a masterpiece, right? Gotta give it a shot. Only red flag was zero downloads, but whatever. Maybe the commenter just made it. Worst case, virus and done.
So I hit download. No virus, no issues. Except my monitor lit up like crazy, I looked at the light, and... blacked out.
