“Fine!” Qian Fu immediately agreed to Chen Hongyu’s request.
“You got fifty thousand where?” Li Huowang looked over at him.
Qian Fu quickly sidled closer, lowering his voice. “Shh, just pretend I do!! Aren’t we trying to get through this mess together right now? We’ll talk about the rest later! Owe a debt before dying, right?”
Hearing this, Li Huowang fell silent and watched as Qian Fu stuffed the money from his hand into Chen Hongyu’s.
At this moment, Yang Na’s face was full of conflict—not over the money, but over what they’d just said. “Huowang, are you sure this woman’s telling the truth? Special abilities and all, is this really...”
“I...” Li Huowang’s expression showed a hint of hesitation as his gaze darted between Qian Fu and Chen Hongyu. “I don’t know either. We’re already here, so let’s just try it. We won’t listen to what they say—we’ll just watch what they do.”
That was what he said, but if there’d been any other choice, Li Huowang definitely wouldn’t have picked this one.
Hearing this, the conflicted Yang Na could only nod in the end, saying nothing.
“So how exactly do I get you out?” Li Huowang asked Chen Hongyu.
“No need. She doesn’t need us to save her! She’s tough as nails! She can get out on her own!” Qian Fu said with utmost confidence.
“I’m not like Qian Fu. I wasn’t locked up in here—I paid to get in. Getting out? Just one word from me. Come on. I’ve got a ton of stuff. Help me pack my bags.” With that, Chen Hongyu turned and left the visiting room.
“Come on! Li Huowang, let’s hurry and grab her luggage! See? One helper secured!” Qian Fu said as he turned toward the inpatient ward.
Li Huowang’s expression was complicated as he thought for a moment, then said to Yang Na, “Let’s go. Get her out first.”
Yang Na nodded and followed Li Huowang toward the inpatient ward.
Once they explained they were helping a patient pack—who’d even paid to be admitted—the three of them smoothly entered the interior of the Sixth People’s Hospital.
The place was no different from other mental hospitals: some odd behaviors, nonsensical ramblings. Li Huowang was long used to it.
As Li Huowang and the others walked deeper in, all sorts of absurd chatter reached his ears.
“I don’t eat eggplant—not ’cause I’m picky, but ’cause the ones they give me are all shifty-eyed. Swap me a bowl of eggplant, and I’ll eat it for sure.”
“I’ll tell you a secret: the world we’re in might just be a holographic projection left behind in the space of some higher world. Things around us look real, but they’re all images. We can move because something in that other higher world moved. We think because something in that higher world thinks! This is the physics model I proposed back in 1997, but it’s never gotten any academic recognition. I’m telling you, it’s all true!! The whole world is fake!”
“What higher world or whatever—let me take your pulse. Oh dear, you’re seriously ill. Did you take the medicine I prescribed you earlier?”
Sensing Yang Na’s tension, Li Huowang softly reassured her. “It’s fine. Anyone who can roam freely is a non-violent mild case. No danger.”
The three soon arrived at Hongyu’s dorm room. When they saw the massive pile of luggage under her bed—plastic buckets, basins, and heaps of unrecognizable items to Li Huowang—they were stunned.
It wasn’t just the volume; every bag and sack was filthy, making the neat-freak Yang Na frown nonstop.
“Just grab that bag of snacks. I’ll get the rest later.” Li Huowang hefted two sacks bulging with clothes and headed out.
Hauling stuff back and forth was exhausting, but luckily Li Huowang and Qian Fu were both strong. Two round trips later, they’d cleared it all.
Li Huowang carried the suitcase on his final trip, escorting Chen Hongyu—now changed into casual clothes—toward the exit.
“You ran into them? Clashed with them?” Chen Hongyu suddenly asked.
Li Huowang nodded. “Yeah. I even killed one of theirs, bit off a finger from another. Too bad even after calling the cops, they found nothing.”
“Hmph, naive. You actually thought about going to the police? They won’t believe you. They’ve got people on their side, one with powerful abilities. They’ll wipe any evidence clean. Not a trace left.”
Li Huowang looked at her deadly seriously, eyeing her three chins. “I just want to ask you one thing: is everything you’re saying true?”
“What? They’ve come knocking at your door, and you still don’t believe?”
“Believe it or not, I don’t care. I just want this trouble gone for good. I want to live like a normal person. I don’t give a damn about anything else.”
“Don’t count on it. Some things, you don’t get to just say ‘I don’t care’ and walk away. Want to solve the problem? You have to deal with it.”
With that, Chen Hongyu grabbed her luggage and quickened her pace.
But just then—“Whoosh!” A figure suddenly flashed behind Li Huowang, yanking a clothes hanger apart and wrapping the plastic-coated wire tight around his neck.
The wire crushed his windpipe, cutting off his air. Blood rushed to his head uncontrollably. Li Huowang clawed at the hanger, struggling to twist back for a look.
He quickly spotted a familiar face hanging upside down: Wang Wei, his former attending physician!
Wang Wei pinned Li Huowang’s back with his foot, denying any chance of escape. His face twisted in fury as he glared. “How long are you going to fool yourself! Snap out of it! That world isn’t fake! Everything that happened there is real! Wake up!!”
“Cough cough cough...” The suffocation intensified. Li Huowang’s eyes rolled back, and amid the haze, he spotted a bizarre circle filled with shifting snowflake patterns.
“Thud!” Chen Hongyu smashed her fist into Wang Wei’s head, knocking him out cold. He slumped lifelessly to the side.
Li Huowang frantically tore the hanger from where it had dug into his flesh and clutched his throat, coughing violently.
“You okay?” Chen Hongyu patted his back and glanced at the unconscious Wang Wei, her expression turning grave. “Never thought their people could infiltrate this place. What the hell did you do to get them watching you this close?”
Once he could breathe somewhat steadily, Li Huowang shuddered at the close call. That guy’s strength had been freakish. Without Chen Hongyu’s timely intervention, Wang Wei’s sneak attack would’ve succeeded.
With that in mind, he shot Chen Hongyu a grateful look. “Thanks.”
Whether she was crazy or not, she’d at least proven her goodwill toward him. Even if she was insane, she was one of the good ones.
