Chapter 144
Chapter 144
Civil Servant Hunter’s S-class Resignation Log – Chapter 144
"Don't cry! The one who should be crying is me!"
Gong Hae-yeon, who'd been watching from the side, smacked Se-ra on the back.
"Thanks to my colleague becoming my boss, I have to handle all the training for the new employee by myself! If you hate it, let's switch. I'll be the section chief, and you can take the rookie."
"Uh, that doesn't sound great either......"
If Gong Hae-yeon became her boss, she'd definitely get all excited and start ordering her around. But thinking about it, this didn't seem so bad either.
Se-ra smiled radiantly, as if she'd never been depressed in the first place.
"Sounds good. But hey, new section chief. You've seen the new employee already, right? What do you think? How impressive is he that Section Chief Kang is after him?"
The news that a new staff member was joining the management office had already spread like wildfire.
He'd aced the theory portion of the public recruitment exam with a perfect score and demonstrated top-tier B-rank healer skills in the practical, securing the highest marks overall and earning his spot. Every department in the perpetually understaffed association had been clamoring for him.
But with both the team's youngest membersGong Hae-yeon and Yoon Se-ragetting promoted simultaneously and freeing up spots, she was assigned to the Dungeon Management Team.
It had caused a huge uproar. Section Chief Kang Hana from Support barged into Do Jun-young's office and turned the place upside down.
But what could they do? The opening was in Management, and with more frequent dispatch missions than Support, they desperately needed a healer.
In the end, Kang Hana left with a sullen face only after getting a promise to send the next-highest scorer to her department. Her slumped shoulders looked utterly pitiful.
"He's not the type to run scared. He's got passion and skills, so training him shouldn't be too tough."
"Good to hear. Nothing's worse than a hot-headed rookie who won't listen."
There had actually been one like that last year. He'd joined Support, but within a month, his trainernow sporting circular bald spotsstormed into Section Chief Kang Hana's office, sobbing and demanding she fire either him or the newbie. In the end, the rookie got cut. No wonder Kang Hana was so desperate for talent.
"He starts next week, right? Our team's first newbie in three years. Ah, finally escaping the bottom rung. Even if my colleague's pulling ahead first."
"I'll be making more money than you. Exciting."
"Argh! You're so annoying!"
Gong Hae-yeon smacked Se-ra's arm repeatedly. But despite her words, she was the one who'd been happiest about Se-ra's special promotion.
A week later, the new employee started. Yu Ji-hyuk, dressed sharply in a suit, seemed to have steeled himselfhe didn't look as awkward as he had during his initial orientation.
"I'm Yu Ji-hyuk. Please take care of me."
Yu Ji-hyuk bowed deeply. Gong Hae-yeon introduced him one by one to the members of Team 1 he'd be working with. A faint flush colored his tense face only when he greeted Se-ra last.
"This is our team ace, Section Chief Yoon Se-ra. Note that the section chief really doesn't like being called Headbang, so watch out."
Gong Hae-yeon's introduction hit just right. Se-ra beamed at Yu Ji-hyuk.
"Long time no see. Congrats on joining."
"Y-yes! I'll work hard!"
Yu Ji-hyuk's face flushed as he answered loudly. Exaggerating a bit, it was like you could see a propeller tail spinning. And his eyes, fixed on Se-ra, showed no sign of budging.
Gong Hae-yeon and Jung Tae-seok exchanged glances with soft "oohs."
'This is that, right?'
'Totally. What a bombshell. If he hadn't joined our team, Yu Ji-hyuk might've cried. Come to think of it, he really wanted into Management. Guess this is why. Jackpot, jackpot.'
'We should tell Section Chief Kang. She's still holding out hope this'll put her mind at ease.'
'Perfect.'
They wrapped up their eye-conversation in seconds, and Gong Hae-yeon set up a desk for Yu Ji-hyuk. His face lit up again when it was placed near Se-ra's.
"I'm your trainer, Yu Ji-hyuk, so ask me anything you're curious about. If I'm not at my desk, go to Section Chief Yoon Se-ra. You'll be learning the ropes for a bit, so things might get busy. We go out on dispatches a lot, so brace yourself."
"Yes, got it."
The enthusiastic Yu Ji-hyuk jotted down notes furiously to commit her words to memory. Gong Hae-yeon quite liked his attitude.
"The Dungeon Management Team's main duties are twofold: responding when a dungeon pops up and handling incidents inside dungeons. For now, we'll start with cleaning up an old accident."
"Oh, right. Hae-yeon, what happened with that Suhorang Guild thing? I've been swamped since and didn't check how the aftermath wrapped up."
Se-ra, eavesdropping on the training, suddenly remembered something she'd forgotten. The Suhorang healer escape incident. Yoo Su-eun had been grinding her teeth over ithad she caught him properly?
"Oh, that. Hang on, file's right here."
Gong Hae-yeon handed over the report. It picked up right after what Se-ra had written upon returning from Suhorang.
"Guild Master Yoo Su-eun caught that healer herself and dragged him back to the association. He was half out of his mind. But his body? Perfectly fine. Like, aaaabsolutely spotless. Not a single scratch."
"......"
Yu Ji-hyuk, listening along, looked puzzled as to what the issue was, but Se-ra got it instantly.
Yoo Su-eun had beaten the crap out of him and then healed him up...... And considering her rage at the time, she probably hadn't stopped at just once or twice.
"We notified Baekhwa Guild about the issue too, and Suhorang covered the damages. Healer Kim Yoo-hyun paid a fine and is serving time now. Aggravated sentence for fleeingfive years."
"Nice and tidy. Glad it's over."
Suhorang had paid out more compensation than expected. Thanks to that, Baekhwa settled without suing. As expected of Yoo Su-eun. She handled this stuff flawlessly, just like she did her money.
Whether Kim Yoo-hyun's mind would ever recover fully was questionable, but his body was fine, there was no solid proof of what Yoo Su-eun did, so case closed. Nice job, nice job.
"Work hard, then."
Se-ra cheered on her little chick's training and returned to her seat. She didn't have much work. Even with the promotion, today was a really good day.
* * *
Contrary to her worries, life after promotion didn't change much for Se-ra. Dispatch when a dungeon popped, rooftop sniping for nearby breakssame old, same old.
The most annoying parttraining the juniorfell to Gong Hae-yeon, so Se-ra's role was sweet honey section chief. Special promotions were the best. Work stayed the same, pay went upperfect.
Before she knew it, Lunar New Year break rolled around.
Even association civil servants don't work through New Year's unless a dungeon breaks out.
So they gather in the office the day before break starts and pray to get through the holiday in peace.
Last New Year's, she'd been jolted awake at dawn for a callout after oversleeping. Se-ra prayed extra fervently this year for nothing like that.
But this year's New Year's vibe was totally different from last.
"Busan?"
She'd just finished praying and caught her breath when a call came from none other than Kang Se-jun. Bracing for another dungeon alert, she was shocked by his unexpected words.
"A trip?"
Busan trip. He'd even snagged those notoriously hard holiday train tickets, so no worries there.
This was weird. Were they close enough to vacation together over the holidays?
Se-ra eyed her phone suspiciously. The contact name 'Avoid At All Costs' jumped out glaringly.
Staring at your phone won't make me say I dialed wrong, so quit it.
The regressor was doing mind-reading now too.
"They called you the All-Knowing Mage, but now you read callers' minds too? You L-rank stalker."
Please, for the love ofdon't say that anywhere.
"Everyone should know who you really are. Make it less unfair for me."
You've got plenty to complain about. Anyway, no weird intentions. I'm sorry about a lot, and grateful for the labyrinth help, so I'm suggesting this.
Yeah, she'd helped Kang Se-jun a ton so far. Brushing it off with one meal felt cheap.
The moment she hesitated, an emoticon popped up.
Her jealous icon was gripping a dinner table. One wrong word, and it'd flip.
She'd gone from startled to totally used to the administrator's table-flipping antics. She even knew how to play it now.
'Why? Jealous I'm going on a trip with some other guy?'
'Oh? Then the administrator can show up in person. I'll skip Kang Se-jun and go with you. Busan? Pfft, we could do Maldives.'
Kiiang! A fox the size of a dog popped up instantly. It wagged its single tail furiously, grinning ear to ear.
It had appeared as ordered, ready to go together, but Se-ra snorted.
'Show up in your real form if you want. What's this sales pitch?'
Kki, kkiuung.
'Don't like it? Too bad.'
Se-ra haughtily turned away. Right in front of the fox, she spoke boldly into the phone.
"If you're offering out of gratitude, will Kang Se-jun foot the bill?"
Full board, transport included. Three nights, two days in an ocean-view suite at a hotel. Top-grade sashimi course standard.
"Deal."
Ah, should've led with that. She would've said yes without a second thought.
Se-ra giggled merrily, ignoring the fox's shocked face, and nailed down plans with Kang Se-jun.
