Chapter 9: The Fate of the Rolling Dog (Thanks to Huo Gusi's Leader)
According to the hints from the watch's system, the dial seemed to be some sort of progress bar reflecting the wearer’s own condition.
Once the half-golden "0" turned fully golden, he should be able to complete his breakthrough from nothing to something, officially becoming the Chosen One—it was like going from 0 to 1. This description sounded odd, as if something was amiss.
Anyway, it didn't concern him!
He did not understand where this so-called Heavenly Track group came from, capable of creating such strange things.
Although it didn’t utter a single word besides the system report, every time Ji Jue felt his spiritual energy dwindling and in danger of depletion, new spiritual energy would quietly emerge, replenishing his consumption.
Compared to Ji Jue's meager capacity, this little watch seemed to hold an enormous reservoir of energy.
No, it was even more exaggerated, as if it were... a bottomless well.
However, the only part he could mobilize and utilize was a mere fraction of it.
He couldn’t help but wonder if there would be any new changes once he became a full-time employee.
But for now… forget it! It was enough that this temporary worker was allowed to tag along.
"What bicycle?"
A curious voice rang out beside him.
Startled, Ji Jue turned abruptly, and only then did he realize the long hair that had unknowingly draped over his shoulder, along with a face that always seemed to wear a mischievous smile.
With narrowed eyes, she looked at him closely.
"Senior Ye?"
Ji Jue was shocked.
"What are you doing here?"
"Just shopping."
Ye Chun waved the plastic bag in her hand, grinning.
"I was waving at you outside the window, but you didn’t notice me at all. But it's truly rare to catch you sipping tea... I thought you would still be buried under your papers, even during summer vacation."
What a wild claim!
Ji Jue grew anxious.
"Can't I take a break and enjoy some tea?"
He lifted the nearly cold red tea on the table, straightened his back dramatically.
"I haven’t touched my thesis all day; I’m really enjoying life here, okay?”
“Really? That would be nice.”
Without hesitation, Ye Chun pulled a plastic stool and plopped down next to him, carelessly tossing her brand-name bag—which would make any poor student like Ji Jue choke—onto the dirty table.
She then grabbed his oatmeal bun and started munching away with practiced ease, as if she were snatching a chicken leg from the cafeteria:
“I wanted to call you out to hang out yesterday, but Auntie said you were busy with your thesis and wouldn’t let me interrupt... How much have you written? Can you finish it before the holiday?”
"Just barely making progress,"
Ji Jue recalled his paper and felt a pang of despair.
“Wow, here we go again... Every time you say you know a little, it just means you’ve given up on being a proper student.” Ye Chun glanced at him with disbelief: “Don’t make me look silly here, Senior.”
“This time it’s true! I just finished the proposal, and I haven’t touched anything else yet.”
Ji Jue raised his hands in surrender, unable to say, "Don't worry, I’m busy capturing a group of bloodthirsty old demons; I don’t have time to rush my paper."
Ye Chun instantly brightened up, “If you’re slacking off, let’s all slack off together! Whoever hands in their thesis first is a dog, understood?”
Ji Jue was already at a loss for words.
Sister, Professor Ye is your aunt, not mine!
Moreover, after school starts, I’ll be in my third year, and you’ll still be in grad school! The levels are different; how can anyone compete with that!
Yet it seemed Ye Chun enjoyed watching him squirm and take delight in it; even when she had always been there to take care of him, she still loved teasing him, leaving him helpless.
Poor Tom was completely at her mercy.
Oh no, he had been caught.
Is she playing mind games with me?
As Ji Jue wandered off in thought, he heard a teasing voice beside him: “Hmm... So you like that type?”
“Huh?”
Ji Jue was confused. “What type? What do you mean?”
"You know, the kind with big breasts and big hips, the flirtatious types with flowing hair, shiny black stockings, short skirts paired with red high heels. You’ve got great taste," Ye Chun commented, following Ji Jue's gaze outside.
“Where? Where?”
He followed her line of sight, and suddenly, he couldn’t smile anymore.
Frozen in place.
On the street corner, behind a white van, the back was opened.
Two burly men were bowing and nodding as they received a heavy box from a woman standing nearby.
That slender and alluring figure, those big eyes, radiated charm, making it hard to look away.
That woman…
Ji Jue felt like he had fallen into an ice cave.
It was clearly that lady from the afternoon before, the one who kept trying to flirt with him at the auto repair shop!
She had shamelessly asked him to look at her headlights!
From the flirtation yesterday to the overwhelming repulsion today, the light blue polarized sunglasses could not hide the deep scarlet of her eyes adorned with long eyelashes!
So, it wasn’t just the old master Ji… even the young master Ji was on her menu?
Literally, on her plate.
Stunned, he stood there for quite a while until Ye Chun waved in front of him, snapping him out of his daze. “Hey, hey, wake up! She’s already left, how long do you want to stare?”
“Ah?”
Ji Jue felt as if he were waking from a dream.
“Junior, listen to your senior—women in society are full of tricks, and you're still underage. You can’t outsmart them.” Ye Chun earnestly advised him, “A boy like you who doesn’t know the world well will simply be lured into her home and locked away in a basement, becoming a rich woman’s toy—that’s no way to live! Be very careful!”
After a long silence, Ji Jue opened his mouth, wanting to say, “Senior…”
“What?”
“Um, I just turned nineteen.”
“Age doesn’t matter!” Ye Chun squeezed his face, not pleased. “Is that what counts? You didn’t express any opposition to being her toy! Besides, if you go with her, what will happen to me and the two kids? Boohoo!”
In the shocked gazes of bystanders, Ji Jue sighed helplessly. “... Senior, could you at least try to hide your melodrama a bit next time?”
“Oh please, it’s just because I’m worried you might take a wrong step and go astray,”
Ye Chun patted his shoulder with a smile.
It seemed like she wanted to say more, but after glancing at her phone, she sighed lightly. “Alright, I won’t tease you anymore. I need to go buy some groceries. I’m off now, take your time eating.”
Ji Jue felt as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
If it continued like this, he truly had no idea how long he could keep up the pretense without giving anything away.
After watching her leave, he finally relaxed.
“Check, please.”
“Already settled, handsome.”
The owner behind the counter, smoking, glanced at him with a look that seemed to carry a mix of nostalgia and understanding, as if he could see his own youthful self reflected in Ji Jue.
With a flick of ash from his cigarette, he sighed softly:
“Ah, those were the days…”
In confusion, Ji Jue turned back, trying to catch a glimpse of Ye Chun disappearing, but she was nowhere to be seen.
Only the vibration of his phone brought a message, accompanying an emoji.
【Dog head pointing at people.jpg】
【We agreed, no turning into a rolling dog!】
Ji Jue froze for a long moment before he couldn't help but chuckle softly: 【Got it】
The screen went dark, revealing Ji Jue's smile.
To be honest, it felt a bit silly.
But there was also a sense of relief.
It felt as if suddenly, all the panic and unease had washed away like a tide, even if it might return.
First, the grand truck with a strange capability, then the notion of a Chosen One, temporary workers... whether it was bloodthirsty old demons or ill-intentioned temptations, or even those inexplicably threatening encounters—so many chaotic things had suddenly surged forth.
He had been dragged into this bewildering vortex, not knowing what direction he was heading.
But in that fleeting moment, he felt he still stood on solid ground, still walking along the path of his own life.
He was still living well, just as he wished, even if bad luck clung to him, there still awaited a bright future.
Therefore, he must seize the time—
Ji Jue rubbed his hands together, following the direction the woman in the car had gone.
He needed to wrap things up quickly so he could return home to work on his thesis!
Right! I am the rolling dog!
But… wait, this seems more complicated than expected.
Ten minutes later, Ji Jue suddenly realized he might not be able to turn into a rolling dog after all.
He stood at the crossroads, gazing into the distance where the woman had disappeared on the monitor…
An exquisitely designed building that stood out among its peers, with a vast parking lot outside and, amidst the twilight, neon lights ablaze.
It was a night venue Ji Jue had never set foot into since he was born!
The sound of lively music and beats emerged from within, and a long line had formed at the entrance, where scantily clad girls snuggled up to men.
Luxury cars flowed into the parking area, each flashy enough to make Ji Jue’s heart race with fear…
This one’s paint job costing twenty thousand, that one’s forty-eight thousand, this one’s outrageous, needing to send back to the capital for a full repaint costing eighty-one thousand… and there was a car whose brakes seemed to be making odd sounds, swapping one out at an auto shop would cost at least thirty-six thousand, right?
Smack!
Ji Jue slapped his forehead, interrupting his runaway thoughts.
In the shadows, where neon and streetlights didn’t reach, he stood blankly, staring at the lights, just like any other pocket-empty passing youth.
As he hesitated, he noticed… the van they had been watching during the day had actually passed by the entrance, heading toward the back of the building.
By the time Ji Jue rounded the corner, he saw the vehicle parked in the staff lot of the night club, with a completely new license plate, and not a single person inside.
Even the back door was tightly shut, and through the half-open wrought-iron gate, he could see a few hefty security guards strolling around, each equipped with walkie-talkies and holding rubber clubs that looked like they meant business.
And the moment they saw Ji Jue approaching, they turned to stare at him.
Ji Jue could only lower his head and hurriedly walk past.
Returning to the front, he eyed the security guards by the entrance.
Every person in line had to hand something over, as if it were a membership card.
Those with cards showed them, while others without had to pay.
Some didn't even bother to wait in line and simply wrapped themselves around the girls, being ushered inside by the head of the staff, or right into the arms of the manager…
Seeing all this gave Ji Jue a headache.
Occasionally, those who didn’t have cards and tried to sneak in were immediately escorted aside by the brawny guards at the front, and it was clear they had no intention of going easy on anyone.
Damn, does it have to be this strict?
Not a drop of water could get through, huh?
Ji Jue felt his head starting to go bald.
Unless he suddenly conjured up a pile of cash or sprouted wings to fly, it would be harder to get in today than to dream about it.
Surely, he couldn't rely on his looks to cling to some rich lady to get in, right?
Wouldn't that make him a kept man?!
Ji Jue looked at the young ladies and older sisters who wore designer dresses and carried various small bags… and he felt a slight wobbling inside.
Just grit his teeth and walk over, right? Who knows, he might even make some extra cash.
