Man City's Midfield Gets a Workout
PSV Eindhoven's Philips Stadion was sold out to the last seat. Amid the overwhelming mix of jeers and chants from the home fans, the referee's whistle kicked off the first half.
Peep—!
- The match is underway! PSV in their home kit on the left side of the screen, Manchester City in sky blue on the right. PSV's pressing right out of the gate—it's ferocious!
- Yeah, Dutch teams never back down at home. Look at that midfielder Tak Go-gang especially. Not even a minute in, and he's already hounding City's Rodri and Ryu Rion, disrupting their build-up hard.
From the opening minutes, midfield was a warzone. Especially whenever my path crossed with Tak Go-gang's—sparks flew every time.
- There, Ryan's got the ball! But who's right on his tail? Tak Go-gang! Relentless!
- Tak's come locked and loaded today. He's bodying Ryan nonstop, not letting him turn. National teammates or not, on the pitch, there's no mercy.
At the 5-minute mark, the second I received Rodri's pass in central midfield, rough breathing hit my back like a freight train.
That energy I'd synced feet with countless times on the national team. But today, Tak Go-gang's aura burned hotter than usual. The moment I tried to turn with the ball, he slammed his shoulder into me without mercy, shaking my balance.
- Whoa! Nonstop clashes between Ryan and Tak Go-gang! Tak's throwing his body in fearlessly. Ryan holds the ball and spins back for now.
- Did you catch that? Tak Go-gang read Ryan's left turn like a book. Mirror play, right? Knowing each other too well can be poison. Ryan's got to prove himself in the starting battle today, but this ain't an easy start.
Tak Go-gang moved like he knew exactly where I'd turn, where I'd look to play the ball next. Felt like he'd tail me all day, even after the final whistle. Guess this is how Pirlo felt.
Up to the 20th minute, the game stayed in a deadlock. City dominated possession, probing for gaps, but PSV's engine room beast Tak Go-gang blocked my passing lanes with insane work rate every time.
At the 35th minute, opportunity finally knocked. Marmoush cut in from the wing and fed me a short pass centrally. Tak Go-gang lunged with a sliding tackle to intercept again, but this time I didn't trap it—instead, I rolled it sole-first backward.
- Ryan's instinctive backheel! Tak's tackle whiffs into thin air! Space opens up! Ryan spots Haaland infiltrating the box!
- Perfect timing! He flipped Tak's prediction right back on him! Cross incoming!
The ball left my toe, grazing just over a defender's head toward Haaland's noggin. But PSV keeper Benitez's godlike super save kept it out of the net.
- No way! That's saved? Ryan's razor-sharp delivery, Haaland's header! But Benitez denies it!
40th minute.
PSV, the pride of the Netherlands, hit back hard too. Quick feet from Noah Lang and Bakayoko threatened City's backline on counters nonstop.
- PSV counter stinging! Tak Go-gang wins the ball in midfield and surges forward himself! Brushes past Rodri!
- Tak Go-gang's engine is unreal. Marks Ryan tight, but offensively, he's in the box in a flash. I chased him down during a brief defensive lapse and shut him down.
44th minute. From City's corner, PSV intercepted and launched a lightning counter. Tak Go-gang took a long ball near halfway, chest-trapped it, shrugged off Gvardiol charging in, and whipped a low cross into the box.
- Tak Go-gang cross! Dias blocks! Aerial battle raging. De Jong! Shot! It's in! PSV strikes first right before halftime!
- De Jong's focus shines.
Luuk de Jong's clean strike rattled the net, and Philips Stadion erupted in a deafening roar that shook the stands. Tak Go-gang shared celebrations with teammates, then shot me a glance and flexed his fist. This bastard? Then the whistle blew.
Peep— peep— peeeep!
- What a first half you couldn't look away from. With the score at 1-0, the scales are tipping.
- Key for the second half: What tactical freedom will Pep Guardiola grant his players? And how will PSV control it? Philips Stadion's home locker room for PSV Eindhoven buzzed with energy and heat. Pride from holding the world's best team, Manchester City, scoreless for 45 minutes—and the thrill of perfectly neutralizing their key engine—mixed into the players' heavy breaths.
Bam!
PSV's Bosz tapped the tactics board lightly, drawing eyes. His gaze locked on attacking midfielder Tak Go-gang in the corner, chugging an electrolyte drink, sweat pouring off him.
"Everyone, listen up! The first half went exactly to plan. That midfield press was fantastic."
The coach pointed to the names on the board: City's core Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Ryan. He flashed a satisfied grin and patted Tak Go-gang's shoulder.
"Tak Go-gang, you're marking Ryan like a dream today."
Tak Go-gang nodded stoically. His jersey was soaked salty from chasing me. The coach continued.
"Check the data now. Ryan's clocking serious mileage today. Midfield's getting a workout. Ryan's gonna be stressed."
Laughter rippled through the room. The coach stared into Tak Go-gang's eyes with even more conviction.
"Ryan. Tonight before bed, he'll be thinking of you nonstop."
The humorous praise peaked the room's vibe. But Bosz hardened his face, ramping tension for the second half.
"But remember: Monsters like City flip games on a single second's gap. Second half, stick to him like you're chasing him to the john. Go-gang, you're breaking Manchester's pride today. Got it?"
"Yes, Coach."
Tak Go-gang rose short and sharp, vowing even fiercer doggedness than the first half.

The scoreboard stubbornly displayed the unbelievable score like it was etched in stone.
As players emerged from the tunnel and scattered to their halves, the commentary booth heated up again.
- Second half about to kick off! What a shocking 45 minutes for any football fan.
- Absolutely. The so-called super team Manchester City trailing 0-1 on Dutch soil. It's not just the score—tactically, PSV read them like a book.
- Midfield's the crux. City's heartbeat, Bernardo Silva and Rodri, didn't create a single shot on target all half. Rare sight.
- And that's where Peter Bosz's masterstroke hit: Tak Go-gang! Ryan won't forget that name for life. Shadowed every move.
- Spot on.
- For City, pride's in tatters after that half. Wonder what surgical tweaks Pep made at halftime.
Peep—!
Second half underway.
Tak Go-gang still pressed within earshot of my breath. Ball at my feet? Shoulder charge incoming. Try to turn? Brutal tackle flying in.
I grinned and dropped even deeper, per Pep's orders.
