King Vardy, the Fox Legion's God Body
To drain Leicester City's stamina even a little as time raced toward the end of the first half, I signaled for the ball with a gesture.
44th minute of the first half.
The ball came back to my feet again. As Bernardo Silva approached from the side, I gave it off lightly and received the return pass, orchestrating the midfield.
- Ryan's holding possession in midfield, controlling the tempo. Exchanging short passes with Bernardo Silva, probing for gaps in Leicester's defense.
- Not much time left, but they're looking so composed. Is this part of the tactics?
As we patiently rolled the ball to find an opening, the opposing midfielders pressed up to challenge me. I turned my body to shield the ball, feigning a switch to the other side while dragging it along. Erling Haaland caught my eye and broke diagonally into the space behind the defense. Without hesitation, I threaded a low, sharp pass through the gap between three defenders.
The ball skimmed the grass like a snake, sliding perfectly to Haaland's feet.
- Oh! It got through! Ryan's killer pass! Connected to Haaland!
- Haaland takes it in stride and unleashes a left-footed shot—!
BAM!
Haaland powered through the defender's resistance with a fierce turning shot. But it was straight at Leicester's keeper, Hermansen. The rebound spilled to the right side of the box.
- Right at the keeper! Hermansen! It's not over yet!
Jeremy Doku was waiting there. He snatched the ball and, with a defender in front, exploded into a burst of steps before ripping a shot a half-beat quicker.
- Doku! Second-ball shot! Ah—! Blocked again!
The deflected ball off the defender's body sailed out over the corner line just as the referee's whistle echoed through the stadium.
First Half End: Manchester City 0 - 0 Leicester City
- The whistle blows for halftime! An intense 45 minutes end goalless for both sides, but Man City must be ruing those final five minutes.
- Absolutely. But if there's a silver lining for City, it's Ryan's adaptability. Early on, Rodri's absence was glaring—positioning looked shaky, even gifting Body a chance.
- Yeah, there were some hairy moments.
- But from that insane chasing tackle on Mavididi late in the half, the momentum shifted. He even started dictating attacks, like that pass to Haaland. It was like he struggled in unfamiliar clothes all half, then tailored them to fit by the end.
- What instructions will Pep give Ryan in the locker room? Can't wait for his Rodri role in the second half!
Pep approached at the tunnel entrance.
"Not bad. We'll switch things up in the second half."
I nodded silently.
After a short break, the ref blew for the second half to kick off.
- Second half underway! 0-0 deadlock, but the action's been anything but dull.
- Ryan's gritty fill for Rodri stood out for City, while Leicester showed their true colors. Pep seems to have pushed Ryan forward—poison or cure, we'll see.
55th minute of the second half.
My position was a half-step higher than in the first. Per Pep's orders, I'd pushed the line up to press Leicester's midfield. The space behind made me uneasy, but I trusted the backline. Leicester's counters were just sharper and quicker than expected.
Harry Winks twisted away from my press. The ball left his toe on a long diagonal to Mavididi on the flank.
- Leicester transitioning beautifully! One-touch, slick!
- Space opened! City backline scrambling.
Mavididi faked a flashy step-over to wrong-foot Aké. I dropped back late to cut the passing lane, but Leicester's gears were meshing perfectly. Mavididi's cutback sliced through the gap between Aké and Dias.
And at the end of it stood a man who'd seemed to know the ball was coming ten seconds ago.
Jamie Vardy.
Vardy used his momentum to just nudge the ball's path. Ederson clawed at it, but it buried into the far corner of the net.
THWACK—!
- Goal! Jamie Vardy! Leicester strikes first!
- Wow... speechless. Peak Leicester football from buildup to finish! Vardy's positioning—ghostly!
The stadium erupted in blue madness. Vardy sprinted to the corner flag, roaring. He patted the Leicester City crest and his number on his chest with both hands, nodding.
'Forgot whose house this is?'
His eyes screamed it without words. The king of King Power Stadium was still him.
The scoreboard flipped to 1-0. Vardy, mobbed by teammates, kept flashing that taunting grin my way.
Pep watched stone-faced from the bench, arms crossed. No time for sighs—I sketched the next play. Goal conceded is conceded; analyze the mistake. Was the space behind emptier than I thought? How's Leicester's midfield and attack stamina? Adrenaline has limits. How much time do I have? Will Pep sub me? Why's the backline so limp today? Rodri out shouldn't mean getting overrun. Nah. Leicester were just strong at home. That's it. In this flow, it happens. No retreating—go more aggressive.
