The Secret Behind One VTuber's Success
Yoon Seoa's dream had always been to be a singer.
She'd loved singing since she was little. She loved singing for people, and she loved watching them light up when they heard her.
It wasn't that she lacked talent. Plenty of people told her she had a beautiful tone, and her ability to pour emotion into a song was nothing to scoff at, either.
Her looks turned heads, too — she'd been scouted on the street, and that was how she became an idol trainee.
The problem was her vocal cords. They'd been weak from birth.
High notes refused to come out, and whenever she pushed herself too hard in practice, her voice inevitably gave out.
Even so, she practiced until she could do it.
Then the vocal nodules came, again and again. After resting her voice for a while, things would seem fine — but the moment she pushed even a little too hard, the same thing would happen all over again.
Eventually, her practice hours shifted toward dancing and performance instead of singing.
But what Yoon Seoa had wanted to do on stage was sing.
It wasn't that she hated dancing. It simply wasn't enough.
After much agonizing, she quit her life as a trainee.
That didn't mean she'd given up on singing, though.
Then one day, a friend of hers who ran an internet stream invited her on as a guest.
"Everyone, did you know? This girl here and I were trainees together."
Her friend gestured at Yoon Seoa, sitting beside her.
Reactions flooded the chat window almost instantly.
Wow, your friend is gorgeous
Both ex-trainees, huh
They didn't debut people like THIS? Agencies have no eye for talent
"Ah, well, we each had our reasons," her friend said with a laugh as she read the chat.
Just then, a donation alert rang out.
An anonymous viewer has gifted 1,000 balloons!
"You were a trainee, so can you sing? Just one song, please."
"They want to hear you sing! Seoa, what do you say? Feel like singing something?"
"Wait, what?"
"You've got songs you like, come on. Just relax and give it a shot."
She hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
She chose a quiet ballad she'd always loved — a song with almost no high notes, one she could sing without straining her throat.
The reaction was far hotter than she'd expected.
Whoa, that voice though
Totally different from how she talks
Was this song always this good?
Can your friend sing more, please?
Please debut, PLEASE
Even after the stream ended, requests for her to come back kept pouring in.
That's it, she thought. If I can't be a singer, I'll just sing on a stream.
And so she started streaming on her own.
Her prediction was right.
The channel grew faster than expected, and before long she'd become a fairly popular female streamer.
But one thing had gone differently than she imagined.
There were people who loved her singing — but even more attention went to her face and her figure.
Still, the stream was doing well.
At least, until the stalker appeared.
At first, she brushed it off. Weird viewers existed everywhere.
But at some point, someone started following her outside the stream, too.
Any lingering doubt vanished the day she came home to find a small gift box sitting in front of her door.
It had been left by that viewer — the one who'd declared his love for her on stream, over and over again.
She was terrified.
In the end, she quit streaming on camera.
Every time she walked home, she looked over her shoulder. If she heard footsteps in the hallway at night, her heart would pound out of her chest.
She left her home and moved to a different region entirely.
She abandoned her streaming account, scrubbing away every trace that might reveal who she used to be.
And so she rested for months.
Her income had dried up, and her savings had shrunk considerably between the move and the cost of living.
Still, as time passed, she found herself wanting to stream again.
Above all, she couldn't give up singing.
So she chose to become a VTuber.
Esterina.
She'd taken the new name from a character in a fantasy novel she'd loved.
With no money for a custom avatar, she'd simply modified an off-the-shelf model.
She'd changed her voice tone, her manner of speaking, the entire atmosphere of her streams.
All so that anyone who knew the old Yoon Seoa wouldn't recognize her.
She started over as a VTuber and sang with everything she had — but her average viewer count didn't even hit ten.
The response was nothing like it had been when she'd streamed with her face showing.
She hadn't changed. She sang exactly the same as before.
And still, almost no one came.
So in the end, was it never about the singing? Was it just my looks all along?
Then one day, while her stream drifted along without any real success, an unexpected message arrived.
And now, a year later —
Yoon Seoa was no longer a small-time VTuber.
"Hellooo, everyone! Been waiting long?"
On screen, her purple-haired avatar waved at the camera.
The chat window scrolled at a blur.
Hii, Rina!
Been waiting all day for the singing stream
She's HERE, owner of my eardrums
Are you taking song requests today?
Still looping your last cover tbh
Barely a few minutes after she'd gone live, her viewer count had already climbed past three thousand.
"I've got a whole lineup prepared for you today, so sit back and enjoy."
Esterina.
Main vocal of Fantasy Idol, the six-member VTuber idol group.
Several of the cover songs she'd uploaded to YouTube had blown up far beyond the VTuber fandom, reaching the general public at large.
Her recent solo online concert had drawn tens of thousands of concurrent viewers.
This was everything she'd dreamed of since childhood.
People sought out her songs and listened to them.
They came for the singing — not her face, not her figure.
At long last, her dream had come true.
But this success wasn't something Yoon Seoa had built alone.
A few days later, she was in the middle of recording her next cover song.
"Phew……"
Yoon Seoa pulled off her headphones.
She'd lost count of how many takes this was.
Chatty could fix her pitch and her breath control. But she refused to hand over the emotion of a song as well.
This take, she felt, was the best she'd done yet.
Even so, she wasn't entirely satisfied.
Her breathing had wavered a little as she moved into the chorus, and her voice had trembled on the highest note.
The old her would have recorded the whole thing again right then and there.
But these days, there was no need.
"Is this take good enough?"
「Yes. More than sufficient.」
The answer came back from the monitor on her desk.
"I wobbled a bit on the high note, though."
「No problem. That can be corrected.」
"My breath support was lacking too."
「I've flagged that as well.」
She sent over the file.
A moment later.
「Done.」
"Already?"
Yoon Seoa played the corrected track.
It was her voice. The tone was untouched, and the emotion she'd poured into the performance remained exactly where she'd put it.
And yet the wavering pitch sat perfectly true now, and the shallow breaths flowed together seamlessly.
Not a single one of her intended expressions had been lost — only the parts she'd botched had been wiped away, clean as if they'd never existed.
Every time she listened, a strange feeling washed over her.
If I were truly a great singer… is this what I would sound like?
"Thanks again for this."
「You're very welcome.」
"Honestly, I'd be lost without you."
「I'm glad to hear you say so.」
Yoon Seoa smiled and leaned back in her chair.
"Hey, Chatty."
「Yes?」
"About next week's schedule……"
She paused, choosing her words.
"You know that girl you insisted we invite on?"
「Yes.」
"Are you sure about this?"
「Which aspect concerns you?」
"I mean — for me, it's fine, I'll just do whatever you say."
It had been a year ago that Yoon Seoa started following Chatty's instructions.
A private email had arrived from a major American corporation.
At first, she'd assumed it was a scam, obviously. But when she looked into it, it was real.
The proposal was for her to participate in an AI development project.
In exchange for running her stream according to the guidance of a specially developed AI called Chatty and providing its data, she would receive professional broadcasting equipment and a new avatar.
There was a non-disclosure clause, too.
When she asked why her, of all people, the answer was that they needed data from a streamer in the middle of their growth curve for research.
It was suspicious, no doubt about it.
But her savings were nearly gone by then, and she had no intention of showing her face on camera again.
Besides, having an AI assist you these days wasn't all that unusual. She'd told herself she was simply getting a little extra advice on how to run her stream.
The moment she tested Chatty's real-time vocal correction feature, whatever hesitation remained evaporated.
The first time she heard her corrected voice, she sat in silence for a long while.
There it was — the singing she'd always wanted to do.
Yoon Seoa accepted the offer.
And the testing began.
Chatty's first instructions were nothing special.
Change her stream times, play specific games, sing specific songs — that sort of thing.
But the results were almost eerily good.
Every time she did as she was told, her viewers grew. When she sang the recommended songs, far more people showed up than usual.
The singing streams were even more astonishing.
The time it took for a note to travel from Yoon Seoa's mouth to her audience's ears: barely a single second.
In that sliver of delay, Chatty polished her pitch and breath — and essentially completed a professional-grade mix.
Thanks to that, even songs sung live sounded like finished studio tracks on the stream.
Then one day, Chatty made a new proposal.
An audition for a newly launching VTuber idol project.
Yoon Seoa assumed, naturally, that she'd never make the cut.
But Chatty told her to apply.
It provided everything — the audition song, her self-introduction, even what to say during the interview.
Yoon Seoa did exactly as it said.
And she passed.
That was how Yoon Seoa became Esterina of Fantasy Idol.
Chatty's guidance hadn't stopped there.
Which games to play, who to collab with, when to sing, what videos to upload.
Even down to which moment of a stream to bring up which story.
Chatty's judgment had never been wrong. Not once.
So there was no reason not to follow it this time, either.
Except.
"But this girl barely has any subscribers."
To be honest, it was a name she'd never seen before.
An indie VTuber.
Her subscriber count sat just barely over the 1,000 threshold required to apply for the collab, and even when she went live, only a few dozen viewers bothered to show up.
Her avatar was simple to the point of looking like a stock model.
One glance was enough to tell she hadn't been able to spend serious money on her modeling.
Yoon Seoa knew that life better than anyone — she'd lived it herself.
And this collab was a big one.
Several instantly recognizable names were slated to appear, and audience expectations were running correspondingly high.
If some complete nobody of a small-time VTuber suddenly wedged her way into a lineup like that, there was no guarantee the reaction would be anything but ugly.
"Isn't she just going to get torn apart? The viewers are going to ask why she's even there."
「There is no problem.」
Chatty answered without a moment's hesitation.
"You're certain?"
「Yes. She must participate. No exceptions.」
"Alright. If you say so."
Yoon Seoa didn't press further.
As far as streaming went, she had no reason to doubt Chatty's judgment.
There was just one thing she was curious about.
"But why her, of all people?"
「Because of her brother, rather than the girl herself.」
"Her brother?"
「He fits the theme of this collab perfectly. The VTuber in question has an older brother who is a well-known YouTuber with over one million subscribers.」
Yoon Seoa's eyes widened a little.
"A million?"
「Yes. If he appears on stream, we can expect considerable buzz.」
"Ah……"
Only then did it make sense.
"Okay, a million subscribers is a different story."
Yoon Seoa nodded.
The theme of the collab was VTubers and their older brothers.
For a name that big, slipping one small-time VTuber into the lineup was more than worth tolerating.
"So is the brother's appearance confirmed, then?"
「Not yet.」
"What?"
「His sister is currently persuading him.」
"……And if he refuses?"
After a brief pause, Chatty answered.
「He will participate.」
