Chapter 161: Temporary Chef
Ku Qi lowered his voice, “You should know that I come from Changjue Village, right?”
Ding Huan nodded; this was something he had heard from Ku Qi's younger brother, Ku Yue.
Ku Qi continued, “My third aunt is married in Daye City, and she has a daughter named Guan Wu…”
Ding Huan was momentarily taken aback.
It seemed he had heard the name Guan Wu somewhere before, but he just couldn’t recall where.
“Guan Wu is the most beautiful woman in Daye City, many people know her. Have you heard of her, Ding brother?”
At this point, Ku Qi looked at Ding Huan.
Upon realizing, Ding Huan remembered that he had heard about this woman when he first arrived in Daye City.
During those few days near the wall, there had been discussions about the beauty named Guan Wu.
“Of course, everyone knows about the most beautiful woman.”
Having recalled it, it was only natural for Ding Huan to say he knew.
Ku Qi chuckled, “Aside from being the most beautiful woman, Guan Wu is quite talented. Thus, the young master of Yan Yue Sect has taken a liking to her and has already proposed. This time the Dao Cultivation sects are recruiting disciples in Daye City, and Yan Yue Sect is also recruiting. Once this recruitment is finished, Guan Wu will follow them into the Dao Cultivation world.”
Ding Huan couldn’t understand, “What does this have to do with me entering the Dao Cultivation world?”
Ku Qi waved his hand, “How could it have nothing to do with you? Just listen. Guan Wu has a unique hobby; she is picky about food and absolutely loves good dishes. However, the cooks of Yan Yue Sect didn't come with the sect, so they can only hire a temporary mortal cook in Daye City to take care of her meals along the way."
Ding Huan understood Ku Qi's meaning; he was suggesting he apply for the position of a cook.
With a pot on his back, it seemed he did have a bit of a cook's vibe.
Unaware of Ding Huan's thoughts, Ku Qi lowered his voice even more, “Don’t think this news is just simple. My second uncle is the village chief of Changjue Village, and he came along with me. Guan Wu is his niece; otherwise, I wouldn't know about this. This matter hasn't been publicized; it's just been notified to some famous chefs for application. You should hurry; there should still be time. Of course, if your dishes don’t suit my cousin’s taste, then that can’t be helped.”
“Thank you, Brother Ku. Could you tell me where to go?” Ding Huan decided to give it a shot.
Ku Qi replied, “At the Jin Residence in Daye City. My third uncle, Jin Shouping, is the city constable. You can just ask around and find it.”
“Thank you, Brother Ku. Regardless of whether I join the Dao Cultivation world or not, I will remember this kindness,” Ding Huan said sincerely.
Ku Qi lowered his voice even further, “Ding brother, I feel you are not ordinary, so I listened to you. Can you now tell me why you can’t join the Shuanghun Sect?”
To be honest, Ku Qi had previously regarded Shuanghun Sect as his goal.
Ding Huan felt there weren't many people around and decided to speak in an extremely low voice, “Brother Ku, whether what I say is true or not, forget it as soon as you hear it. Don't mention it again.”
Ku Qi patted his chest, “Ding brother, don’t worry; I assure you I won’t blab.”
Ding Huan nodded, “I heard from a friend that Shuanghun Sect is recruiting top-tier talented disciples, and it’s highly likely they are seeking to possess the bodies of elders.”
After saying this, without waiting for Ku Qi's response, Ding Huan quickly left with the old Sixth.
Ku Qi was left in a daze.
Possessing a body...
His face suddenly turned pale, as he felt Ding Huan’s words rang true.
No matter how good a newcomer’s talent is, they cannot become an elder-level figure after just a year of training.
Ding Huan's explanation held up; that must mean the elders, due to aging, require fresh bodies to continue their cultivation.
“Brother, I’m thinking of going to Shuanghun Sect to see if I can join them.” Ku Yue walked over, slapping Ku Qi’s shoulder, startling him further.
Ku Yue was more impulsive than Ku Qi and, though he had decent talent, had yet to choose which sect to join.
Ku Qi came to his senses and shouted, “No, you're only allowed to join my sect!”
“Ah…” Ku Yue was taken aback by Ku Qi's overreaction and then asked in confusion, “Brother, we agreed we wouldn’t interfere with each other's choices of sects.”
Ku Qi spoke coldly, “I take it back; you must listen to me.”
Ku Yue's expression soured a bit; their family taught that when parents were absent, one had to listen to their elder brother.
...
The Jin Residence was easy to find.
Ding Huan simply asked someone and soon stood outside the residence.
He found it hard to believe that the residence of a mere constable would be this large.
A sweep of his divine sense revealed that the Jin Residence covered at least dozens of acres.
And this was in Daye City, where every inch of land was precious; what kind of power allows one to claim such a vast area?
Ding Huan felt he had arrived in time; he sensed that there were already eleven chefs dressed for the occasion waiting in a hall inside.
“Who are you looking for?” A servant stood in front of Ding Huan, looking at him with confusion.
It seemed Ding Huan's outfit was quite unusual, with a large bundle on his back and an old monkey following him.
Ding Huan clasped his fists, “I’m here to apply for the position of cook for the young lady.”
Applying to be a cook? The servant smirked sarcastically, “Are you sure you’re here to apply as a cook?”
Ding Huan sensed something was off.
His divine sense scanned and found over a dozen people waiting inside; out of them, five or six had cooking tools, clearly also there to apply.
Why did the servant’s gaze seem so strange when he claimed to be applying for the cook position?
“Indeed, I am here to apply as a cook,” Ding Huan replied firmly.
“Put your things down and scram,” the servant said, reaching for a tiger-headed knife resting against the wall.
Ding Huan was left uncertain.
If they didn’t want to accept him, that was one thing, but demanding his belonging meant they intended to harm him if he refused to comply?
“Since you don’t want a cook, that’s fine.” Ding Huan turned to leave.
“What’s the matter? You think you can come and go as you please?” The servant blocked Ding Huan's path.
Then, not knowing what he pressed, Ding Huan saw a dozen more servants charging at him, led by someone in charge.
“Chong, this guy doesn’t know where he heard the news, but he came to apply as a cook,” the leading servant reported quickly upon observing the head servant’s arrival.
“Kid, tell me who told you the news, and then break a leg. I’ll let you go,” the steward said with a menacing grin as he strode forward.
Ding Huan furrowed his brows; this didn’t feel right.
He had some association with Ku Qi, and there were no conflicts of interest; Ku Qi had no reason to harm him.
“If you don’t say it, we won’t let you go,” the steward waved his hand.
Immediately, the dozen caretakers surrounded Ding Huan, just waiting for an order to pounce.
Ding Huan's divine sense scanned the courtyard just inside the door, where a masked woman was approaching.
Despite her covering, she was still beautiful enough for Ding Huan to notice.
What a stunning woman! Other than the restored Xiao Yu, he had never seen anyone as beautiful as this woman.
This should be the woman recruiting cooks, Guan Wu.
With that thought, Ding Huan raised his voice, “I came to apply for a cook position; if you won’t let me in, that’s fine, I can leave, but what does this mean? Are you going to kill me?”
As he spoke loudly, he directed his voice toward the woman.
He felt that this wasn’t how the steward was presenting the situation.
“Seize him,” the steward ordered angrily when he saw Ding Huan not only refuse to comply but also challenge him.
The servants drew their weapons one after another, and Ding Huan sighed.
He decided to kill a few before leaving Daye City.
“Who dares to make a move?” a cold voice rang out.
Everyone turned and saw a young woman standing at the courtyard entrance, her face covered with a veil.
Without needing to see her face, just based on her elegant figure, all the servants recognized that this was their young lady.
“Miss…” the steward turned pale instantly.
He couldn’t understand why the young lady would appear here.
Usually, she hardly ever walked outside the courtyard alone, and since she was about to leave the mortal realm, she often didn’t even step out of her room.
Today, she not only came out but ventured beyond the courtyard.
“What is going on?” Guan Wu asked with an icy tone.
“This person has an unknown background, sneaking around the Jin Residence. I intended to capture him and send him to the city guards,” the steward quickly explained.
He hoped Ding Huan would be frightened enough not to speak.
Little did he know, Ding Huan had thought too much.
He clasped his fists and said, “A friend told me that the Jin Residence was hiring cooks. I believe I have some skill in cooking, so I came to try my luck. After coming here, when the servant told me they weren’t hiring, I planned to leave. I didn’t expect they wouldn’t let me go and even threatened to break my legs and take my belongings.”
“Is that so?” Guan Wu calmly gazed at the steward.
With cold sweat beading on his forehead, the steward stammered, unable to utter a word.
“Seems it is true,” Guan Wu said in a steady tone.
The steward then dropped to his knees, “Miss, spare me! I was bewitched by the ghost of my own mind, thinking these foreign cooks would be incapable, so I did not want to waste your time.”
Ignoring the steward, Guan Wu turned to Ding Huan, “Since you are here to take the cook assessment, you may come in; the assessment will begin shortly.”
Ding Huan clasped his fists, “Thank you, Miss.”
After saying this, he and the old Sixth entered the Jin Residence without hesitation.
This mattered greatly to whether he could enter the Dao Cultivation realm; he wouldn’t be polite about it.
Although Ding Huan entered the residence, his divine sense remained outside, wanting to see how Guan Wu would deal with the group of servants.
“Are these all your people?” Guan Wu inquired with a calm demeanor.
The steward quickly replied, “Yes, I was wrong, Miss. I assure you…”
Before the steward could finish, Guan Wu waved her hand and said calmly, “Check how many people are still in the residence with him, and eliminate all of them.”
“Yes,” a sudden voice echoed, followed by a man with a murderous expression standing directly before the steward.
By this point, Guan Wu had already stepped into the courtyard.
Ding Huan watched in astonishment; this woman had a fierce edge.
The steward had evidently abused his power, using the chef recruitment opportunity for his own gain.
Once Guan Wu caught him, she didn't even bother with questioning further and simply ordered his execution.
