Chapter 208: The Kind-hearted Family
The middle-aged man narrowed his eyes, not so much concerned with Lan Xiaobu's boundless powers, but rather with the fact that his very life essence was locked by a flash of white light.
As for Lan Xiaobu’s Seven Sounds Halberd, he dismissed it entirely; to him, a mere True God realm practitioner was no more than an ant.
He summoned his own treasure, intending to rip apart the white light that held his life essence captive.
He merely shifted slightly to avoid the halberd's glow.
Yet, the next moment, he regretted that decision.
The Seven Sounds Halberd ignored spatial barriers and appeared right before his eyes.
His minor evasion was useless against the halberd's disregard for space.
Now, he wanted to dodge, but it was too late.
Was this some form of spatial magic? The light restricting his life essence became controllable instead, and he held the upper hand with ease.
As regret surged through him, the Seven Sounds Halberd pierced his forehead, dividing his head into two.
Before the middle-aged man’s primordial soul could escape, Lan Xiaobu launched several soul thorns toward him, twisting the halberd in his grip.
“Did you kill him?” A cold voice spoke, layered with evident displeasure.
The speaker was a charming young woman dressed in a green skirt.
Her spaceship hovered nearby, and she stood with a furrowed brow, glaring at Lan Xiaobu.
She had just witnessed a True Immortal nearly killing a practitioner of merely the True God realm, and from the sidelines, she had aimed a beam of light that seemed intended to save him.
However, to her surprise, that simple intervention led to a reversal where a True God practitioner was slain by Lan Xiaobu.
This was not the result she had anticipated.
Lan Xiaobu released a sigh of relief.
Compared to the middle-aged man from the Yan family, this woman appeared far easier to communicate with.
He was certain that the middle-aged man had blocked him not because of the Yan family issues, but due to the insignia on Shu Shaoji.
The man must have been astonished that a supposedly doomed person appeared outside the Yan family, which led him to impulsively intervene.
After all, if the Yan family wished to chase him down, it could not have happened so quickly—he had barely stopped when the pursuers had already caught up.
“Thank you for the life-saving grace, fairy. In my moment of desperation, I acted with all my strength and did not expect to end up killing him. In hindsight, I realize it was you who saved my life,” Lan Xiaobu said, feigning humility.
Acting with all his strength was indeed true, but claiming ignorance about the killing was only partially false.
If someone aided him, how could he not seize the chance to eliminate the middle-aged man? Would he wait for his benefactor to reminisce with the man intent on killing him? Lan Xiaobu had no connections here, and if the woman rescued him and knew the middle-aged man, he would surely be doomed.
The dead man wouldn’t even need another excuse; he could simply declare Lan Xiaobu as the Yan family's runaway slave.
Now he had killed someone, and if the woman was seen as his accomplice, they couldn't possibly send him back to the Yan family, right?
Desperation fueled his actions.
The woman furrowed her brows, recalling the earlier scene.
Lan Xiaobu had been ensnared by the other man's murderous intent and couldn't find a way out.
Perhaps, at that moment, he was desperately circulating his internal essence, attempting to unleash his strongest attack, but he was simply unable to do so.
When she intervened and broke the man's killing aura, locking his life essence instead, the middle-aged man must have thought he was the real threat.
It was plausible that, at that moment, Lan Xiaobu hadn’t recognized he was safe and acted in haste, fearing another lock.
Thinking along these lines made it somewhat understandable.
“Let it be; always give others a chance if you can. Do not indulge in excessive slaughter, as it would be detrimental to your own path,” the woman mused, though curiosity lingered in her mind.
“Sister Qingshuang, he’s just a servant,” a green-clad girl whispered beside the blue-skirted woman.
Realizing this, the blue-skirted woman noted that Lan Xiaobu was merely a servant and perhaps advising a servant on the dangers of overindulgence in slaughter was pointless.
Before she could say more, the green-clad girl frowned. “Sister Qingshuang, it seems the one killed just now was from a kind-hearted household.”
The blue-skirted woman froze, then her gaze settled on the slain middle-aged man.
Her expression shifted slightly—the insignia on his garment was clearly that of the Yan family.
“You've slain someone from the Yan family’s good household?” Her tone changed, and regret washed over her as she recognized Lan Xiaobu’s servant’s garb was also from the Yan family.
It became clear he was indeed a runaway slave, unable to shake off the pursuit of those after him.
Ironically, she had helped this runaway.
Lan Xiaobu felt a shiver of fear within him, cursing his luck.
His family hid a soul-refining furnace, where numerous cultivators from the celestial realm had been captured for their souls to be distilled into soup, yet he bore the title of a “kind-hearted person” from the Yan family.
However, he understood all too well that if he divulged the matter of the soul-refining furnace, it would be over for him.
This woman revered the Yan family’s kind-heartedness and would never allow him to spread such rumors; she might even capture him and send him back home.
“Fairy, I am indeed from the Yan family. He was the steward Te Bo. The steward's wife is both beautiful and kind-hearted, often lending a hand to us. We all respect the steward's wife. Yesterday, due to a heavy workload tending to the flowers, I worked until nightfall. The steward's wife kindly offered to help me. To my misfortune, the steward saw us and unfairly accused me of having an affair with his wife…” Lan Xiaobu explained.
The green-clad girl interrupted, “And then he tried to kill you?”
“I’m just a servant; if he had just killed me, it’d be one thing. But he didn’t believe his wife. He killed her! Just as he was about to strike me down, the master called for him, and after he left, I seized the chance to escape,” Lan Xiaobu said, wiping his eyes.
Lan Xiaobu realized these two women were somewhat naive, probably due to their extended time in seclusion for cultivation without real-world experience.
He could only be grateful that he had acted swiftly to eliminate the middle-aged man; otherwise, these two might have abandoned him.
The blue-skirted woman stared at him for a long while, making Lan Xiaobu uneasy.
She eventually said, “Let’s clean up the body and proceed with us.”
From her tone, it was unclear whether she believed Lan Xiaobu or not.
“Ah…” Lan Xiaobu exclaimed in disbelief, feeling that he had just staged an elaborate performance yet she remained doubtful.
He glanced at the nearly disappearing chaotic fissure, thinking that even if he jumped into the rift, he wouldn’t want to accompany this woman.
The green-skirted girl scoffed, “Unappreciative of good will. Let me tell you, there is a grand formation leading in and out of here, called the Viewing Screen Formation, proposed by the Yan family in conjunction with multiple celestial cities, cultivator families, and sects. To leave this place entirely, one must possess an identity token. As a mere servant, you will definitely be stopped and cannot escape the bounds of the Viewing Screen Formation.”
A chill ran through Lan Xiaobu as he realized how formidable the Yan family was.
They must have anticipated issues with the soul-refining furnace and set up this grand formation.
While it appeared to be unguarded, it was, in fact, impossible to leave their watchful eye if any trouble arose.
If it weren’t for these two women, both he and Shu Shaoji would have been doomed.
“Thank you for saving me, Fairy. I, Lan Xiaobu, will remember this for eternity.” He bowed deeply, then quickly rolled up the middle-aged man's body, tossing it into the rift.
In the process, he secretly removed the man’s ring.
That wasn’t all; he also tucked a piece of earth from where he had slain the man into the rift.
The chaotic fissure would disappear in the time it takes to burn a stick of incense.
Having taken care of that, Lan Xiaobu expressed gratitude once more and leaped onto the spaceship with the two women.
Their strength far surpassed his, and even if he tried to escape, he had no hope.
Moreover, if there was indeed the Viewing Screen Formation, it would be a joke to think he could flee.
“Your body disposal skills seem quite practiced,” the green-skirted girl teased lightly after he boarded.
Lan Xiaobu grinned awkwardly, “I’m just used to manual labor.”
Inside, he thought, “The skill of body disposal is something I’ve only just begun to grasp; the real pros are the kind-hearted folks of the Yan family.”
“Go change your clothes and remain inside; do not come out,” said the blue-skirted woman, dismissively turning her attention away.
As the spaceship sped away, Lan Xiaobu confirmed that they were not heading back to the Yan family and breathed a sigh of relief.
He quickly discarded his servant's clothing and put on his own attire.
After the spaceship had flown for half an hour, Lan Xiaobu, hiding in the inner chamber, noticed it had come to a halt.
His divine sense cautiously scanned outward, immediately detecting a massive gate array.
The blue-skirted woman’s spaceship was parked outside the array, with at least seven or eight people standing guard, evidently there to inspect arrivals.
Lan Xiaobu dared not probe these people with his divine sense, certain that several among them were much stronger than the True Immortal he had just taken down.
Those far superior might even be Golden Immortals.
“Esteemed seniors, I am Chang Qingshuang, a disciple from the Medicine Fragrance Valley, and this is my junior sister Qi Hanfu. We are here at the Viewing Screen Peak to attend an auction at Silver Bay City, to purchase some items,” the blue-skirted woman said, performing a respectful bow and speaking in a remarkably polite tone.
Realizing that these two women hailed from the Medicine Fragrance Valley, Lan Xiaobu thought they were unfamiliar.
The leading man nodded, but said, “I am aware of the Medicine Fragrance Valley, however, we cannot bypass the rules at Viewing Screen Peak. Please remove the restrictions on your spaceship; we must conduct a thorough inspection.”
Chang Qingshuang frowned slightly, and Qi Hanfu's expression turned grim.
If they opened the internal restrictions, it was guaranteed Lan Xiaobu would be taken away.
When they arrived, the guards had not requested to inspect their spaceship, so why the need for inspection when departing?
Yet both women knew that not complying was impractical.
Chang Qingshuang sighed, “Hanfu, release the restrictions.”
It wasn’t that she lacked the desire to help Lan Xiaobu; she simply lacked the ability to do so.
As for her own safety, she was unconcerned.
The Yan family was well-known for their kindheartedness and wouldn’t make things difficult for her and her junior sister.
