The Empty Slot
The first day Sohwa takes a break from streaming. That morning, she posted a notice on her fan cafe.
It was short. No emoticons. Sohwa's notices were usually a bit longer, mixed with friendly tones. Not this time.
Fan cafe comments started pouring in right away.
The fan cafe comments stayed peaceful to the end. Lots of worried fans, no suspicious ones. That's what fan cafes were for—joining to be a fan, not to doubt.
Doubts moved elsewhere.
I closed the fan cafe and opened the gallery tab.
I lit a cigarette. Fan cafe cheers and gallery suspicions were posting at the exact same time.
Surface and underbelly separated. Outsiders see only the fan cafe and call it a "healthy fandom." Insiders check the gallery and say "it's already shaking." Both judgments right—that's the fandom's real terror.
Sohwa's break was my call. "Take a week off," I'd said. But that act alone was gallery proof of "something's up."
My judgment was turning into poison for her.
This differed from three years ago. Back then, I didn't judge. Did nothing, so that VTuber crumbled alone.
Now I was moving—and my moves threatened Sohwa.
Which was worse? No clue.
Two p.m. DM. Reina.
I paused a beat. Reina wasn't talking simple collab. It was framing: "Sohwa's week off isn't editor bait—it's prepping a big collab."
Fandoms forget bait for collabs. Bigger events bury small doubts. Industry tactic: mid-tier lifts Hakko once, buries one bait. But debt incurred.
I went silent. Reina used brand strengthening as pretext. But inside that, desire to bind with me.
"Han-cut editing is part of my brand." That made me part of her.
She knew.
I stubbed out my cigarette. Reina didn't call it business judgment. No more pretending on the third line.
DM closed.
I sat at my monitor a long time. Accepting Reina's proposal was right. Collab buries bait fastest.
But accepting pulled me into her structure. Not buyer-seller anymore—she wanted me as brand part.
Editing that collab cements it publicly.
To protect Sohwa, I bound to Reina.
Three years ago, similar choice. Bound to one to protect another.
Eight p.m. DM. Harukong.
I pulled out a cigarette.
I lit it. Harukong never said I seemed stressed. She checks gallery daily, so knows vibe. But that shouldn't link straight to "benefactor stressed" normally.
Harukong had out-of-normal emotion. She didn't seem aware.
DM closed. I leaned back, cigarette in mouth.
Harukong rewatching good for editor. Sohwa rewatching—warning.
Same act, different meaning to me.
Because I see them different. Fair? Accurate? Can't tell.
Midnight. Opened gallery again. New post above daytime one.
I read that post long. "Editor switch is answer." Fandom's most constructive proposal.
Arrows at editor, not VTuber—means they haven't abandoned her.
Demand: drop editor to save VTuber.
Three years ago, fandom's first demand too.
I didn't accept. Clung to editor spot till end. That VTuber crumbled because of me—my clinging broke her last line.
Knew I misjudged for three years.
But now, same fork—same judgment.
Can't cling. Can't let go.
One difference from three years ago.
Back then, no feelings for that VTuber. Now different.
Does this difference help or hurt? Unknown.
One a.m. DM. Unknown nick. 'MinSeoJin_SohwaManager'.
Checked profile, accepted. Sohwa's official agency manager account.
I took cigarette from mouth.
Held breath. Official agenda—agency slow, but gallery spreads "Sohwa agency starting Han-cut switch talks." Fandom locks in: detach from Han-cut.
Trap statement. Write: I'm bound. Don't: Sohwa bound.
Beat.
Paused beat.
Hand on keyboard, thought long. First time Min Seo-jin crossed business line.
Answer: I cross too. No answer: she retreats.
Decided to answer.
Hand stopped.
Min Seo-jin long no reply.
Almost smirked. Min Seo-jin's questions always direct, unavoidable—silence answers too.
DM closed.
Looked out window. Two a.m. Workshop street quiet. Six streetlights. One convenience store sign. No passersby.
Where's Sohwa now, what doing? I told her week off, but impossible not think of her that week.
More I try not, more I do.
One of three-year-ago mistakes too. When that VTuber quit, thought "distance best"—no contact. But distance lonelied her more.
Heard later: she wanted even one editor contact till end.
Cried that day. Vowed no more editing.
Did anyway. Nothing else I know.
Premiere Pro open beside monitor. No Sohwa next stream yet. None week.
Staring empty timeline, decided: hold till Reina-Sohwa joint ends. Then judge Sohwa continue or not.
Not now.
Delay not answer. But not state to judge.
DM alert. 'sorae_prev'. Sohwa sub-account.
Breath caught. Should rest. I said rest. I said step back week.
But sub-contact.
Fingers stopped.
Breath caught. No answer to that.
Sohwa knew no answer. Asked knowing.
