Episode 45
Episode 45: The Awards
After ending the call with Baek Seung-chan, Ji Pyeong-san thought about the condition he had requested.
"A broadcast network drama… that’s definitely not a bad idea."
‘The Killer’s Shopping Mall’ had been released exclusively on an OTT platform.
That meant people who weren’t subscribed couldn’t watch it.
In particular, “Ciginy Plus” mainly had content like hero films and animation, so most of its subscribers were in their teens to thirties.
Because of that, Baek Seung-chan had high recognition among younger audiences, but not much among those over forty.
And although ‘The Killer’s Shopping Mall’ had been a success, the platform itself didn’t have that many subscribers.
Even after surpassing 3 million due to the drama’s success, it still ranked fourth among domestic OTT platforms.
Compared to the number one platform, “Nflix,” it had about four times fewer subscribers.
So despite the success, it didn’t translate into overwhelming public recognition.
But if he succeeded again with a broadcast network drama, it would be different.
He could gain popularity across all age groups and firmly establish himself as an A-list star.
‘Afterlife Restaurant’ was perfect for that.
It had youthful appeal while also delivering emotional depth that older audiences could appreciate.
"It would’ve been nice to produce it ourselves… but it can’t be helped."
Ji Pyeong-san felt a bit disappointed.
Unlike web dramas, producing a mini-series wasn’t something his company could handle yet.
"I need to find a production company first."
He immediately began moving.
In Korea, there were the three major broadcast networks—
SBC, KBC, and MBS.
Even with many newer channels, these three still held the most influence.
Their year-end award ceremonies were a national event.
Preparations began months in advance.
Lee Jung-hoon was the PD overseeing the SBC Drama Awards.
He rushed to the hospital.
Inside the room, Kang Dong-wook lay in bed with casts on his shoulder and leg.
"Dong-wook."
"Hyung, you’re here."
They had known each other since his debut.
"Are you okay?"
"I’m fine. Just minor fractures. I was lucky."
He had been hit by a drunk driver.
Considering the condition of the car, it really was a miracle.
"But what about the awards?"
Kang Dong-wook looked apologetic.
He had been scheduled as a presenter.
"Don’t worry about that."
Though he said that, it was a headache.
Award ceremonies needed trending stars.
And Kang Dong-wook was both a top star and currently popular due to the drama.
"Then how about another actor?"
"Anyone in mind?"
"What about Seung-chan?"
He suggested Baek Seung-chan.
"He’s good."
Lee Jung-hoon agreed.
After the drama aired, Baek Seung-chan had become the most talked-about actor.
"But it’s live, and there are only three days left. Isn’t that too much pressure for a rookie?"
"And his co-presenter is also a rookie."
Kim Ga-hee.
Still, Kang Dong-wook smiled.
"He won’t be nervous. Trust me."
December 31.
Baek Seung-chan headed to the SBC Drama Awards as a presenter.
When Kang Dong-wook asked, he agreed immediately.
Even if he wasn’t winning, he wanted his parents to see him on stage.
"Oppa!"
He met Kim Ga-hee.
"You look amazing today."
"Was I ugly before?"
"No, but today is different."
He was dressed in a full black suit with complete styling.
"You look beautiful too."
"Thanks… I guess."
She was wearing a dress and full makeup.
She looked more mature than usual.
"But I’m really nervous…"
"It’ll be over in ten minutes."
"I guess that’s true."
She nodded.
At the venue—
Crowds cheered, cameras flashed.
They walked the red carpet.
"How do you feel being here?"
"I’m honored."
"I’m happy to be invited."
After a short interview, they entered.
"Why aren’t you nervous?"
Kim Ga-hee asked.
"Maybe I’m older than I look."
"That’s not funny."
The ceremony began.
Performances filled the stage.
Soon, it was their turn.
"Don’t be too nervous. Just follow the script."
They stepped onto the stage.
"Hello, I’m Baek Seung-chan."
"Hello, I’m Kim Ga-hee."
Her voice was stiff with nerves.
Understandable—
Hundreds of senior actors were watching.
Baek Seung-chan stepped forward.
"It’s an honor to present this once-in-a-lifetime award."
He eased the atmosphere.
"Next time, I’ll try receiving it instead."
Cheers erupted.
"Not bad…"
Even the PD was impressed.
"Let’s announce the nominees."
Kim Ga-hee read them.
Seven nominees.
"Then the winners are—"
The tension rose.
"Baek Seung-chan! …is what I’d like to say."
Laughter filled the hall.
The tension broke instantly.
"This isn’t just good…"
The PD was stunned.
His ad-lib carried the composure of a veteran.
"This will be talked about next year."
