Simple but Special Snacks
At times like this, you need a fresh flavor to replace the usual potato fix. And that brings us to this: the four-skewer set.
Calling it a "four-skewer set" sounds fancy, but it's nothing special. Chicken skewer, sausage-rice cake skewer, hot dog skewer, and fish cake skewer. They all come on sticks, so four skewers it is.
First up: the hot dog skewer, naturally. I debated chicken or sausage-rice cake first, but right now, it's hot dog all the way. Load it with sugar, drown it in ketchup. As a kid, I'd slather both sides greedily, but these days, I go heavy on one side in a wavy pattern for those big bites—
"...What a letdown."
How can this be? Kwang! This is supposed to be a hot dog? Beneath the thick, fluffy dough—sweetened to the max with sugar and ketchup—a glimpse of sausage peeks out with that first bite.
...It's huge! Not some cheap, meat-scented knockoff, but a massive, firm sausage! Not mushy, but packed with meat that chews with a satisfying crunch!
My god. This isn't a hot dog. It's something masquerading as one!
"Eh, as long as it tastes good."
They used such premium sausage that the whole hot dog's balance is a total mess. But considering the price, this luxurious discord might not be so bad. Should I have skipped the sugar? Less ketchup might've made it feel even more upscale.
Leadoff batter Hot Dog takes a valiant swing but gets tagged out at first after a fierce battle. Props for the hustle, but too much ambition.
Next up, number two: sausage-rice cake skewer, maybe.
Ah, yes—this is it. The pop of tiny sausages paired with chewy, nutty mini rice cakes.
"This one's got great balance overall."
The sauce is perfect. Personally, I think sausage-rice cake skewers live or die by the sauce, not the ingredients. It's the mediator, the conductor. Weak sauce, and the sausage and rice cake flavors clash separately; too strong, and it kills them both.
A tasty one lets the sausage shine as the star when you bite into it, the rice cake take center stage with the next, and together? A harmonious orchestra.
By that measure, this is a delicious sausage-rice cake skewer.
Number two advances with flair beyond expectations!
Now, cleanup hitter number three: chicken skewer.
"Mm."
Ahh. The aroma of perfectly grilled chicken fat. Big chunks of meat alternated with green onions, slathered in spicy-sweet sauce—like a highway rest stop classic.
Little skewers are great, but these hefty ones have their own massive charm.
Leading the powerhouse lineup from three to four. Does it deliver on that intense visual?
"Ohh...!"
Why is moderately hot chicken skewer so irresistibly good? Chunky leg meat, chewy yet bursting with juices. Grilled, not fried—that subtle smoky char, piping hot and impossible to resist!
The spicy-sweet red sauce pairs beautifully with the meat. But it's so sticky-sweet that even one piece leaves my mouth a glued-up mess. And after all those prior snacks, it's already starting to cloy a bit.
Ah, a solid hit... but it drops right in front of the fielder. End of the inning?
"Mm...!"
No—the fielder bobbles it! The ball slips between their legs! Oh, an error!
As if. That's no fielder's error—it's the green onions.
Perfectly grilled green onions. They shatter the cloying buildup in my mouth. A flavor that naturally sparks puns.
They're sweet. Scorched black on the outside from the heat, but inside, juices have seeped out, filling it to the brim. Concentrated onion aroma and sweetness—a fearsome dark horse.
Sticky sauce sweetness clashes with the onions' viscous sweetness... or so you'd think. They cancel each other out—no, they transcend into a higher realm.
Grilled chicken's umami, the sauce's childishly sweet punch, the onions' hefty yet light sweetness—they fuse into a flavor that never tires!
I pluck off bites of chicken and onions, chomping away.
...It seemed like one alone would fill me up. So why, after finishing it, is there this lingering regret?
They say snacks shouldn't satiate fully—just leave you wanting a bit more. By that logic, this chicken skewer is a perfect snack. I could eat endlessly without tiring!
"...Should I have saved this for last?"
Gnawing the handle where meat and sauce have crisped on reveals the final straggler: the fish cake skewer.
There's still room, but is it right to end with this? The prior sausage-rice cake and chicken were bold with their sauces. Will this plain, sauceless one make a fitting finale?
The little devil in my head whispers, "Not too late! Order another chicken skewer?"
The little angel counters, "Try the fish cake first. Order more if needed. That's why we earn money, right?"
...Fair point. Both make sense. Time to boldly take a bite.
One bite. Chewy texture hits the tip. A light jaw clench meets resistance, then pop—front teeth sink in. The cut surface brushes my tongue tip: oddly rough yet firm and springy.
The cross-section lands flat on my tongue. And—
"...!"
It's still warm inside! Crust cooled and firmed up outside, but the core's toasty. Actually easier to eat now that it's settled a bit!
As I note it's less cold than expected, a ticklish itch spreads across my tongue.
What's this? Something wrong?
Sudden explosion of umami!
"Whoa..."
Concentrated minced fish umami detonates at the tip! Double-processed—steamed then fried—it bursts forth with the trapped heat!
A plain fish cake skewer, served straight from the display, no sauce. If the others matched their flashy looks, this unassuming one seemed meh at first glance.
But no—it proves itself a true cleanup hitter with a casual home run!
Insane. I chew the fish cake thoroughly. Each crunch unleashes massive umami, making my head spin.
That unique steam-fry routine? Or the perfect harmony of fish, veggies, and starch? The fish umami locked in jelly form, subtle veggie sweetness, nutty crisp starch—they hit two, three times per chew.
How did this humble shell hide such potential? A warm fish cake skewer... where was this power lurking?
I ask myself over and over, but no answer comes. All I can do is marvel at the umami again and again.
Powerless. Utterly swept away by this simple form's complex, explosive savoriness!
"...Satisfied."
Finishing the rest stop snacks one by one brings a massive wave of satisfaction—not sneaky, outright crashing in.
Stomach's not full yet, but body and soul are at 100% bliss.
"Maybe grab a coffee."
I buy a cup from the rest stop. Ugh. Bitter, thick, bland—pure wake-up juice, cheap stuff.
But why does even this taste satisfying? Rest stop magic?
The coffee sharpens my mind. Snacks left me drowsy despite not being stuffed, but that's gone now.
Whew. Good. This'll carry me a ways. Might need another stop midway time-wise, but until then, I'm sharp as a tack.
"Hit the bathroom, then head out."
I tidy the trash, use the facilities, wash up, and stride to my parked car—
"Oh shoot!"
One more thing before that. Almost forgot.
Can't believe I nearly overlooked it. I march back to the snack corner and grab two more packs of walnut cookies.
Forgot because I devoured the last ones. The snack relay's perfect score nearly made me blank on restocking.
On the way back, I pop a couple more in my mouth. Sweet. Perfect dessert after treating snacks like a meal.
My satisfaction's now bursting past 100%—150, 200%.
"Maybe it's a blessing there's no dimensional airport."
If there were, I wouldn't savor these little joys. A true silver lining, right?
