Uninvited Guest in the Rain
In the webtoon, Yu Eunseol goes berserk after meeting Yoon Jihee.
She finally reunites with the mother she had both resented and longed for, only for Yoon Jihee to wound her with words and actions harsher than any stranger’s. In complete contrast, Bae Minjun trails after her, gushing about how much he loves having an older sister and begging her to like him back. Bae Hyeonseung is simply happy to have gained a pretty little sister; he tries to look after her in even the smallest ways, eager to be of help.
Her mother Yoon Jihee is someone to resent. Bae Minjun, who has done nothing wrong, is somehow hateful just for existing. And Bae Hyeonseung’s one-sided kindness only makes her uncomfortable.
Then, by sheer rotten luck, while Yu Eunseol and Baek Sihyeon’s group are briefly away, Yoon Jihee, Bae Minjun, and Bae Hyeonseung are brutally slaughtered.
On the surface it is nothing more than the deaths of people she resented, hated, and felt uneasy around. But her true feelings were never that simple. The grief she cannot bear twists into a thirst for revenge, and Yu Eunseol snaps.
The one who stops the girl who might have become an even worse killer than Seo Hamin is Baek Sihyeon. Cha Suho and the rest of the group do everything they can, yet only Baek Sihyeon is able to halt her rampage.
The problem is that to witness that event—and the quest that comes with it—I have to let Yoon Jihee die.
“Unnie always used to say it like a mantra. That you’d come back… that you hadn’t forgotten us… that Mom loved us.”
“……”
“Did you ever love us? Even once in thirteen years, did you ever miss us?”
“What is it you want to say? No—what do you want to hear? How should I put it for you?”
“Mom…!”
“Just call me a cursed bitch. Call me a rotten bitch. I’ll listen to as much of it as you want.”
“Haa…. I feel sorry for Unnie. She might still be waiting for you up there in heaven, not even knowing what kind of person you really are.”
Hearing her talk like that almost makes me think it would be fine to just let her die.
Anyway, that is not a problem for right now. Even if the story’s difficulty has gone up, the overall flow should not have changed. At the very least, this event only happens after they start controlling the contaminated water at the Seongsu-dong purification plant.
So for now I only need to focus on the quest in front of me and the kids who still have not woken up.
“I’m sorry.”
“What… did you just say…?”
“I said I’m sorry. Isn’t that what you wanted to hear?”
“Mom!!”
“Don’t call me that. I only raised you for seven years, but I lived thirteen years forgetting you ever existed. Do you really expect me to play mother for you now?”
“You’re the worst…”
“That’s enough.”
In the end someone had to step in. At this rate she was going to snap right here and now. But it was not me who interrupted. The instant I was about to speak, Bae Hyeonseung cut in.
I had heard the front door open and close, but the two of them clearly had not. Yoon Jihee’s startled expression said everything.
“Hyeonseung…!”
“Please stop, Mother. You don’t mean any of that.”
“….What are you talking about?”
“……”
After a brief pause, Bae Hyeonseung simply stared at the woman who had just asked him that. Then he walked over, opened the liquor cabinet packed with bottles, and pulled out a very expensive-looking bottle of whiskey.
“Would anyone care for a drink?”
“……”
Yu Eunseol was the first to shove her chair back and stand. Yoon Jihee rose right after her.
“Our guest is leaving. See her out for me, would you? I’m a little tired.”
“Ah….”
Looking slightly flustered and sheepish at how quickly the two women had vanished, Bae Hyeonseung turned to me with the whiskey still in his hand. I stood up as well, walked over to where he was, and simply took the bottle from him.
“We’ll count this as already drunk.”
“Are you leaving?”
“Who knows. I should go after her first.”
Whiskey in hand, I chased after Yu Eunseol. I had to catch her. If she disappeared like this, there would be nothing I could do.
Of course I could force the issue. Using strength is always the easiest solution. Strip Yoon Jihee’s clothes by force, get a look at her naked body, drag her back to the commercial building against her will, and make her use her skill—then every reason I came here would be neatly checked off.
But if I did that, I would never get to see the event where Yu Eunseol goes berserk. My relationships with Yoon Jihee, Bae Hyeonseung, and Bae Minjun would be completely ruined. And there was always the chance Yu Eunseol might snap because of me and come after my throat instead. After all, the only reason she joined me in the first place was as a quest reward—a reward that was specifically her joining me for the sake of revenge.
“Hey, Yu Eunseol.”
“Don’t stop me!! This time… don’t stop me…!”
“……”
She had already moved so fast she was outside the villa. I grabbed her arm, but this time she did not swing it free. She simply kept her back to me and shouted, her small shoulders trembling.
I had no choice but to let go of the arm I was holding. That was when something began to fall from the sky.
Plip— plip-plip-plip— plip-plip—
Whether it was fate, coincidence, or that perverted god giving me a hand, the stage was being set perfectly.
“It’s rain!!”
“Rain’s coming!”
“Get containers!! Everyone grab something to catch water!!!”
Voices rang out the moment people confirmed the rain, and soon the only sound filling the world was the roar of the downpour.
“Ugh! Cough cough!!”
“Don’t just drink it straight! Catch it and boil it first if you want to be safe!”
“What the hell are you doing with a bowl that small?! Go get all the kimchi containers!”
“Ah..! Wait a second!”
“……”
Amid the people scrambling to catch rainwater, Yu Eunseol stood motionless. She had tilted her face up, letting the rain fall onto it. Probably so no one would notice she was crying.
I grabbed her arm again and spun her around. She bit her lower lip, staring at me with eyes full of tears that were not rain.
“When you’re sad, nothing beats this.”
“……”
I twisted the cap off the whiskey, put the mouth of the bottle to my lips, and took a big swig. No—I held it in my mouth, then caught her chin between the thumb and forefinger of my left hand and kissed her, letting the whiskey flow into her mouth.
After all those vicious words, she was glaring at me like she wanted me dead.
“Ahem..! Your daughter’s a bit of a lightweight.”
“Just how much did you make her drink..!”
“Ugh….”
Not that much. Only three times. One full mouthful, a slap across the face, another full mouthful, another slap, and one last full mouthful. If you counted it in straight shots, maybe six glasses? Yeah, that was actually quite a lot.
“More importantly, she needs to get dried off. Would it be all right if I cleaned her up?”
“……”
As expected, she was a full step above Yu Eunseol. Yoon Jihee fixed me with an even sharper, more terrifying glare that radiated pure cold, then kicked me out of the room and personally wiped down her daughter’s rain-soaked body as the girl lay on the bed.
Or at least I assume she did. I never saw it, but one of the towels she brought out was wet.
“Just for today. Leave tomorrow.”
“Understood.”
Yoon Jihee handed me one dry towel and went back into the master bedroom. A moment later she reappeared carrying toiletries, towels, and a change of clothes.
“It’s really coming down… pouring out of nowhere like this…”
“……”
I pretended to stare out the living-room window while drying my hair with the towel. Soon I heard the front door open and close. The second it did, I slung the towel around my neck and hurried to the entrance.
I had to go see Yoon Jihee’s naked body while she washed herself in the rain. This was absolutely not because of any personal interest. It was a quest, so I had no choice but to look.
Except why the hell were there so many people getting in the way?!
“Hey! Hey! Don’t go that way!”
“Turn around and wash over there, not here!”
“We’ve already got everything covered!”
“Still, turn around!”
The small shared garden in front of the villa was completely taken up by every container imaginable catching water. The rooftop was the same. So everyone had crowded into the much narrower space behind the villa to wash.
Men and women at the same time. Not mixed together like a nude beach, of course—they had hung tents like curtains down the middle to create a barrier, separating the sexes. Still, there were more people than expected and the space was tight. A waiting line had even formed.
Yoon Jihee was nowhere among those waiting. So not here, then.
“Hmm… where did she go… this way?”
Women were washing on the left, men on the right. I climbed over the left wall.
I was over the wall, but this was a neighborhood full of expensive villas surrounded by high fences. There were plenty of safe places to wash. That was the problem—it made it hard to pin down where she had gone.
Normally I could roughly track her by following the zombies’ movements, but it seemed rain made the zombies glitch out.
“Kraaak!!”
“Kraaaaak!!!”
“Kraaa!!”
“Kraaaaa!!”
“Kraaak!!”
“Kraaaaaaa!!!”
They were whipping their heads in every direction and screaming. Some suddenly went haywire and sprinted off alone; others bit the zombies next to them. Even the ones chasing me lost interest the moment a little distance opened up and dashed off somewhere else.
“Rain breaks the zombies… that’s some pretty useful information. But where the hell did this ajumma go? Huh??”
I was looking around when the zombies at the top of the slope beside me suddenly swarmed off in one direction.
“Found her.”
I ran along the top of a wall barely wide enough for one foot, climbing the slope. When I looked where the zombies had gone, they were already pouring into the alley right in front of me.
“How far is she going..!”
I jumped down from the wall and vaulted the one across the way. After five minutes of using the zombies as guides, I finally realized something was off—even if a little late.
No one would go this far just to wash when they had no idea when the rain might stop.
Thud-thud-thud!!
I picked up speed. In an instant I closed the gap on the zombies I had deliberately kept at a distance so they would not notice I was tailing them.
“Kraaaaak!!”
“Kraak!!”
“Kraaa!!!”
“Kraaaaaak!!”
Through the heads of the turning zombies I caught a glimpse of someone climbing over the high wall of a villa.
“Out of the way.”
I shoved and dodged the zombies lunging at me, then vaulted the same wall the figure had crossed.
Thud—
Shiiiiing!!!!
The moment my feet hit the ground, a razor-sharp blade came flying at my throat. That speed was on Seo Hamin’s level. Way too fast for a simple scout.
I snatched the wrist mid-air and at the same time knocked the black cap off the attacker’s head. Long hair cascaded over their shoulders.
“I thought you were a woman!!!!”
“Ugh…!!!!”
I nearly jumped out of my skin. The rough stubble covering the mouth and chin startled me so badly I brought my fist down on the crown of his head. His eyes rolled back as he crumpled to the ground. I checked his face carefully, but I had no idea who he was. Maybe a character who never appeared in the webtoon.
Still, I could guess the type. The ones who slaughtered Yoon Jihee and the others the moment Yu Eunseol and Baek Sihyeon’s group left. But they were showing up already? The water had not even been controlled yet—wasn’t this way too early? Had the raised story difficulty scrambled the order and flow as well?
“Ah, right! The naked body!! If I miss it you’re dead..!!”
I sprinted toward the villa. The streets were packed with zombies, so I kept hopping walls. That was when the quest suddenly cleared.
Hmm…. Maybe older women really are my type after all…
And damn, is that figure even real?
